You can argue whatever you feel like arguing but regardless of what your partisan belief is, the best wushu athletes of the 70's, 80's and 90's were also trained traditionally, often before they began competing in the sport (again, Zhao Changjun, Yuan Wenqing, Jiang Bangjun, the list is very long.) I'm fascinated by people who feel they are benefiting others by arguing a partisan belief they were taught by someone else. Notice how there is no Nandu on my channel. Wonder why?

Gong fu translates as a skill that with persistent effort is mastered and it is not exclusive the martial arts. the reason I upload videos from the pre-nandu era of wushu is that the practitioners also mastered traditional styles as specialties to augment their competition "flavor." Nobody is calling this traditional gongfu, but you'll find that the consistent champions of wushu (yuan wenqing, zhao changjun and jet li) all mastered a traditional style.

Hau Zhi Hua deserves that title, I think, though Coach Liu is a brilliant player and teacher!!! Her straightsword is certainly second-to-none.

I'm not really sure what you mean. I am aware of who Jet Li's coach was (Wu Bin) and I was only stating the name of the master who taught him Fanzi Quan, which is a traditional style. Though his traditional training was an augmentation of his wushu training, it is only mentoned to express the neccesity of learning traditional styles in Wushu from the 70's, 80's and 90's. Zhao Changjun was a Cha Quan master before he competed and Yuan Wenqing also studied Cha Quan and Chen Style Taijiquan

...and this, kids, is how changquan became not much more than a succession of fist-palm slams (11) and slapkicks (7)

@TeetMauLau Honestly I do not know who taught Jet Li Bagua, Taijiquan, Xing Yi or Tang Langquan, nor was I aware that he learned these styles outside of his movie portrayals of them. Perhaps you could answer that question better than I. The master who taught him Fanzi Quan was Ma Xiande, the PREMIER Hui muslim gongfu expert of his generation. Traditional to the core, and whom players such as Yuan Wenqing and Zhao Changjun have also revered.

Pett1024 Changquan isn't anything specific. There are many traditional styles from Shaolin to Chen style Taijiquan that all have a changquan set in their curriculum. The Chang Quan presented here is a modern one created from different traditional styles for the sake of competition.

@wushu297 OK...Who was Jet Li's sifu who taught him Fanzi Quan. I also understand that he also learned a "style" called Bagua who was his sifu for that entire system. I am also aware that he studied Tai-ji...Who was the traditional sifu who taught him that? He also knew Xing-Yi and Tang Lang Chuan...who were his respective sifus who taught him these traditional systems?????

@wushu297 Yes, I am quite familiar with the translatory term for "Gong fu". 1997 being "pre-nandu" is still awfully recent in my book, and there is a difference in their performances vs the late 70's early 80's era to which I am more acclimated with. Not calling it "traditional gongfu" is still a question of semantics when one still considers the traveling so-called "Shaolin Monks" as legit. What traditional style did Jet Li master?

@wushu297 I think you are just as aware as I am, that Jet Li's primary "sifu" was "coach" Wu Bin before Jet Li "retired" before the age of 18. Regarding Master "Ma Xiande" (or Xianda), was this the style he taught Jet Li as his "coach" or "sifu"? Ma Style Tongbei Fanzi quan - Zhanzhuang Fan

@wushu297 "Though his traditional training was an augmentation of his wushu training, it is only mentoned to express the neccesity of learning traditional styles" I would argue completely to the contrary. The communist govt of China was force converting that Traditionalists augment to teach the contemporary style of sport-Wu shu. Thus the term "coach". How old was Jet Li here? (youtube vid) "Li Lianjie fanzi quan"

Pett1024: "Wu Shu" translates as "War Art". But the term "Wu Shu", semantically speaking, is a performance art. It is a generic form of Chinese Martial Arts which takes traditional Gung-Fu (Chang Chuan being the most exploited) and extending it's boundaries beyond it's intended form. It's the contemporary form and "flashdance" of todays touring "Shoalin Monks". Don't get me wrong. The Bejing Wu Shu Troupe (Jet Li...et al) are phenomenal performers. But this is Not traditional Gung-Fu.
