Absolutely! I think Jet Li's 1st feature movie "The Shaolin Temple" is the most impressive Martial Arts film ever made. But this Shaolin vs Lama is my favorite martial arts movie of all time. The hilarious dialogue, especially the trash talking, the fighting and the uniforms stand out to me. I never tire of watching this movie. The Raid Redemption gets the bronze medal of martial arts films. Crazy movie!!

- This is my most favorite Kung Fu movie from now on. As a short-tempered single father of a three-year-old kid, with a dark past from my parents, this movie really helped me to calm myself every time a very inflaming situation is done by my son. One time, my son wasted an expensive bottle of shampoo while I was busy working at home. When I saw him, I kept slapping him on the arm. After calming down for a second, I saw that he got red marks on his chest due to the beating. I proclaimed myself a very very bad father. I asked myself, "Am I going to kill my own son just for things that he wasted?" I reflected. I cried. I apologized to him. I love my son so much. But my uncontrollable emotion could lead to a worst irrecoverable situation. A few hours after the event, I remembered this movie and suddenly said, "Buddha's name be praised." Then, I decided to buy two Buddha beads bracelets and wear them on each wrist to remind me that hurting my son, whether light or heavy, is not the way to discipline him. So, thank you very much for this movie. It is now gradually changing my way of life. "Buddha's name be praised." P.S. "Don't forget to breathe." - The Silent Monk, The Forbidden Kingdom

Back in the 80's there was 1 particular theater on 42nd street between 7th and 8th avenue you could watch 3 flicks for $3.50. I remember smoking a blunt and drinking Old E, watching this movie, the Mysteries of Chess boxing, and The Fearless Hyena. When I left the theater, it felt like I took a Kung Fu class. I remember as soon as I got out the bus terminal on 42nd street I'd race across the street to this video store called "The Karate Center" and cop as many kung fu movies as I could afford. First time I've ever seen this one (and I grew up watching Kung Fu Cinema). It's fantastic. Has lots of reverence for the spiritual side of the Martial Arts. One of my favorite phrases in a lot of these movies: "Buddha's name be praised". Even though these movies are usually dubbed into English, the mostly British actors who handle the voices (always one of my favorite things) took their parts seriously.

Ange Smith I was scrolling down the comments and was kinda caught by surprise from ur comment...I was watching this film purely for entertainment and when I read ur comment, I instantly had flashbacks of my entire family when we were still young, before my siblings and I all grew up and went to have families of our own; more importantly, the flashbacks had my Dad in them, long, long before he passed in 2015 ... We all used to crowd around an old school television and watch Kung Fu flicks from our pretty extensive collection of martial arts movies on VHS...we were poor as hell but we were happy... And best of all, together... Wanted to give you kudos for having had deep, nostalgic and similar Kung Fu familial ties... At the time, ofc being so young meant you didn't fully appreciate the moments nor fully comprehend the gravity that then kept you tethered so closely to ur loved ones and also kept you centered to the here and the now... Those were the best parts of life... It's ALWAYS the simple things... Like watching a movie

This is one of the rare Taiwan's Kungfu flicks. Can be said that 99% of Kungfu movies in the '80s came from HK, and mostly Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest.

@Jogador965 жыл бұрын
Wow! This has got to be the best Kung Fu movie I have ever seen. Why? 1. Crisp kung fu moves showing flexibility agility and martial skill and intent. Not flailing about or dancing around. 2. Great story line about the rivalry between the Tibetan lamas and the Shaolin monks who, as the abbott pointed out, are both Buddhists-so why should they even fight? The story line is very believable and does not involve extremely twisted and impossible turns of events. 3. Noble characters (the hero and his young monk friend and the first kung fu master in particular) and very despicable antiheroes. 4. Scenes do not drag on; focus is on the story. 5. Excellent showcase of various kung fu styles-tiger, snake, golden bell, buddha finger, etc. Even Chinese swordplay and spearplay is excellent. Whoever the choreographers were, they did a very good job 6. Humor is kept to short minimum and is not corny as in a lot of even Jacky Chan movies. 7. The girl in the story is not a mere decoration but a vital part of the story and fights with skill whether with a sword or empty handed.

One thing this film does better than any I've ever seen, is continuously introducing characters with increasing levels of skill. We start with our hero, who hasn't been beaten in years, only for us to learn that he is damn near the weakest fighter in the story. As new characters are introduced, they progressively are more and more badass. It really gives us, the viewers, this sense of these men being extremely powerful. Absolutely well done.
@teksight9714Ай бұрын
Yes. Like Dragon Ball Z did but this was much earlier. Maybe DBZ got the progression from a high point idea from this movie. Like we think the Saiyans are the best fighters but they keep finding someone better and finally the angel Wis teaches them ultra instinct and then we learn about gods and beyond.

The effect that this movie had on me is probably beyond most would even comprehend or believe. I saw this movie when I was 4 years old. Because of this movie I became a life long marital artist. I learned so many styles of Kung Fu and other martial arts. I spent my entire tweens, teens and early 20's practicing martial arts 4 to 6 hours everyday. I ended becoming a Buddhist monk (then priest when I left the temple). My temple even sent me to China for 5 years where I learned to speak Chinese fluently. While I was in China I met my wife and had a baby. I really would not be the person I am today if it wasn't for this movie. Virtually everything about my entire personality and existence can be traced back 31 years ago when I first saw this movie.
