It was a common element in gothic literature, the authors used repetition of names throughout generations to create even more confusion for the readers

@@ilginaybilir1326 May be a late answer but.. after Linton’s mother (Isabella, which is at the same time Edgar’s sister) died, Edgar took Linton to Thrushcross Grange where Cathy lived as well.

I guess Catherine is Heathcliff’s true love and best childhood friend and Cathy is the only daughter of Catherine who died in childbirth. There’s mix up with the names.

Ok be prepared for a long read. Cathy( Edgar’s child) was so happy that her cousin linton was coming. Isabella, his mother passed away and so the boy was taken to Edgar first. Linton was bookish and very sickly. Edgar vowed to take care of him. He and Cathy were fond of each other till heathcliff decide to take linton away(as linton was his child). Edgar could do nothing but give him. Over time, Cathy and linton fall in love( to me it is infatuation) and begin writing love letters to each other. Nelly finds out and threatens to report her to Edgar which she pleads not to. They burn the letters and Nelly thinks it ended there till she finds out that Cathy steals away sometimes to wuthering heights. Heathcliff notices this and then uses linton to cajole both Cathy and Nelly to the wuthering heights where they were locked up. Cathy was released to see her now dying father Edgar if she promised to marry linton. She agrees and rushed out to see her father before he died. This is important because linton died later on and thrushcross grange became heathcliffs own. Till he died. Hope it helps
