Another rider recently posted that several miles of 555 had been coated with 'chip and seal' ( a rider's worst nightmare). Perhaps that is why you were rerouted off 555.

That could be possible. But the section we missed was at the very end. I would be curious to know why they chip and tarred the road. There isn't a single rough section I can recall of it.
