@@GorGob they weren't happy to be there. They were manipulated mostly by war propaganda. The government wanted people to fight for them, and made war seem as a military camping. Men thought it would be fun to go to there. They even seemed excited in their way to battlefield. But it was a giant lie. I don't deny that they were honorable man, they were. But war is a horrible scenario. No one of these men would wanted to be there again. They survived, cold, hunger, diseases, most of them came back without legs, an eye, an arm. They had traumas and a lot of issues associated withit. They stayed for several days in trenches, without food or water. And obviously they fought with the "enemy": immersed in a storm of bullets and toxic gas, watching their friends die in front of their eyes. At the same time, their families had barley food, and had to work for entire days. And although this all, there were announcements saying literally: "the kitchen is the key to victory EAT LESS BREAD" they were given *a piece* of bread to distribute in a family and they even got told to eat less. And after war: entire towns destroyed, millions of people dead, poverty everywhere.

What upsets me more now is after researching my family tree 2 years before Nathan died his younger brother John died in Gallipoli in August 1915 and Nathan youngest son died in 1916 at 6 years of age. He would have been fighting in France and getting letters about his brother and his son dying before being killed himself the year later. It upsets me about what state of mind he must have been in? @jordanstewart24556 жыл бұрын
From my understanding that used computer technology to restore and color the footage. The director even stated in one of the interviews that the program was able to add in extra frames from some film reels by analyzing the movements and making corrections where needed.
@wilkowilkins3636 жыл бұрын
Listening to Peter Jackson .. the frames that are missed by the old cameras that make it jerky and make the movements fast have been added by computer technology so that the movements are much more real and slow it all down. It makes the men so much more human. Also they used forensic lip readers to add the correct speech from the original footage ... Quite quite incredible

what about the sound effects, were they added from a different program or they used original sound?

Grandfather,a US Dough-boy, was in C company, fought in the battle of the Hindenburg line. He was captures and sent to a POW camp. His daily rations included a small loaf of bread which was made from, get this, potato skins and saw dust. On his last day of imprisonment, before he was shipped back to the States, he kept one loaf as an example to show the folks back home what he survived on for 18 months. This loaf should be on display in the National Prisoner of War Museum in Andersonville, Georgia. The family donated it posthumously in his name. My name.

Likely a combination of reasons. 1. Cameras were much more of a novelty then than they are now, so it's likely that when the soldiers knew they were being filmed they reacted accordingly, as one might having never been filmed before - giddy. 2. Some of the footage shown on this newsreel looks as though it may have been taken at the end of the war (note the german helmets). Additionally, alot of the footage in this newsreel looks as though its not taken during times of engagement, and the soldiers, like any group of people would, are just keeping themselves busy and entertained. I would be careful not to takeaway from this that "war so filled with joy"; WWI, at the time, was the worst and most brutal conflict in human history.

What truly pops out at me is the jolly expressions and energy of these men, going to war or living in it and yet just taking these moments to smile, have a smoke, joke around and act like they're living happily and spritely. I'm sure they've chosen these segments on purpose, but given the circumstances... how horrible the war was and the absolutely traumatic effect it had on so many of these men mentally and physically. These men, including the men who would later fight in WWII, were truly a different generation. Many of them were far from professionals or cut-out for war unlike today's modern militaries - yet they went in and got the job done.
