@Arthur Watson Imagine you are falling and you really cannot aim your weapon at the Flak Guns below you and even if you COULD, your rifle is NO match for a German "Big Bertha" gun. Imagine being killed in the air as you fall, from enemy fire. Yeah, maybe it's better than being boiled in oil or being torn apart by four horses, but it's still pretty bad. @@richvance9649 It seems John Smith's comment has been deleted. Rich, I thank your Father for his service. My Cousin's Brother-in-Law was 21 on June 9th, 1944 and never lived to see 22. He died on Normandy Beach, probably in the Omaha Sector ("Bloody Omaha"). When the Death Camps were liberated in 1945, only then did we realize what a Nightmare a Nazi Victory would have brought to the World and why we had to fight. I have a Time Magazine from Dec 23, 1940, which I bought in Manhattan, NYC, in 1995, for 20 bucks! (It was 15 cents in 1940!) In 1940, Time Magazine wrote that, despite pressure from the Nazi Government, the Nazis could not make millions of German Christians do something ---Pray for a Nazi Victory--- which Time called "unprecedented" for a Nation at War. German Protestants and Catholics (except for the Churches directly controlled by the Nazis) would "pray for the Safety of their Soldiers". but NOT for a Nazi Victory. They must have recognized something Evil about the Fuhrer.

Robert D Vance is my Uncle. He is my mom's older brother. I am happy to say he is 97 years young and doing well. I remember as a kid he would never talk about the war. For 50 years he would not speak of the war or fly on an airplane. My cousins and brothers had no idea what he had been through. As he got older he decided to start writing his memoirs. I always looked up to him because he was always so kind to us but when I read his memoirs I was shocked. After WWII he reenlisted during the Korean conflict. When they say the greatest generation that has ever lived Uncle Bob is living proof. When my Mom passed away I spoke at her funeral. Uncle Bob came up to me and told me he was proud of me. I told him I have always been proud of him. Watching him stand and salute my father's casket who passed away last year and was a veteran of Korea was to me the biggest honor one could give my dad. Heavy bomber airmen in WWII were the equivalent of infantry soldiers running into machine guns in WWI. I have no idea how a bunch of 19-22 year old pilots with same age crewmen were able to do the stuff they did in WWII in B-17s and B-24s. Incredible. They used to make B-17 movies and TV series all the time. They stopped making any of them since the late 1990s. There has only been one movie showing a B-24 in combat and that was the wonderful "Unbroken" movie. There needs to be more WWII air combat movies made this century. I mean air combat, not combined sea-air combat like Pearl Harbor and Midway.

I had (at least) 10 great-uncles who fought in WWII. Two of my great-grandmothers had 5 sons EACH in the war at the same time. One of my great-uncles, (Robert Morris), was a pilot of a B-24. HIs brother was a flight engineer with the Flying Tigers(in China, I believe.) Most were in the Army Air Corps, but several were in the Navy. I’m not sure people realize the importance behind this channels mission. I’ve been studying WW2 relentlessly for about 2 years now. (Borderline obsessive to be honest.) just because of how incredible, terrifying, humbling, and tragic those 6 years were for the entire planet. There’s really nothing that even pales in comparison IMO. Well besides WW1 which was essentially just the prelude for 2. And that’s not to smear the horrific experiences of The Great War because up until September of ‘39, the world had never seen anything like it. With all that said, the power and significance behind these memoirs speak for themselves. And they’re so heartbreaking yet amazing at the same time. Without video evidence, Eye witness testimony is the most reliable elements of history. And the people running this channel are well aware of that and are doing amazing work. I’ve never once considered supporting any channel through pateron before, but I have a strong desire to do what I can and help you guys reach as many of these hero’s as possible. Not just for me to listen to, but for History to listen to. “Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.” -G. Michael Hopf.

I'm blessed to be able to watch these stories and appreciate all this channel does to get these out. I miss hearing about these type of war stories from neighbors or people I have meat through out the years. Very thankful for all the veterans that have served in any and all wars for this great country. God bless you all.

I'll tell you what, my uncle Roman M. Mierzejewski was a WWII bomber gunner. He made it back home, but not all in one piece. He lived to be 83; unbelievably. He always took the time to relate his experiences to young people. I think that they just could not grasp the enormity and hell of it all; myself included. But when he got with his service veteran buddies, they were in their own world when they spoke only with each other. This is a very, very wonderful channel. One other thing: my mother worked for a doctor her whole life, and I can remember being a child and seeing some of the Jewish patients with the handmade tattoos on their wrists or lower arm put there by the Nazi's for Identification. Eerie.

Me wondering why he does not have 1mill for letting us learn of what people have sacrificed for our freedoms that most take for granted.

@@v1per66 Makes me sad on two accounts. 1. That these brave heros are almost all gone 2. How far away we as a nation have become, as no younger generation would ever fight for this kind of (world) Freedom again..

Both were hurt enough for the Germans to put them in their hospital. Yet they were moving trying to evade capture. Tough!

You can see the sadness and mental pain he is feeling. Remembering all of this and his fellow crew members. But especially being the LAST one alive. 😥 .

My uncle was a WWII B-24 copilot. He was 19 years old when he went into combat. He lived a long life in Manchester, NH. We all miss him.
