This P-51D was Paul Allen's and flew regularly. Now she sits waiting to be moved to a new museum in Arkansa.

I was at this museum yesterday and this airplane was undergoing its annual service. It has its cowl removed and there is much more to see. I'd post a picture but I don't know how to do that. FHCAM plans to run the engine outside next Thursday October 19 at 200 pm. The airplanes at this museum are all kept in running condition. Most of them regularly flew pre-Covid. FYI the tanks are kept running too. This museum has tank festivals where they drive the vintage armor around outside.

Nice video. That specific model is the D model, there were many subvariants of the D, including the D-5, 10, 15, 25, 35. The other variants are the A which was the Allison powered variant, the B and C which are essentially the same, the B was built in California and the C was built in Texas. Both came standard with the Packard V-1650-3 engine and had the "razor back." Canopy. The D model which this is and was most numerous and the K model were essentially the same. The D was built in California and had a Hamilton Standard prop and the K was built in texas and had a Aeroproducts prop, both came standard with the Packard V-1650-7 engine. The H was the final production variant, some 500 were built and they never saw combat. They were 500LB lighter than the D model and had 2,200HP V-1650-9 engine.

Packard motor company was if I remember correctly contracted by Rolls Royce either that, or allowed under license to build Merlin engines. The Packard buiilt engine is VERY similar to the Rolls Royce, some will argue the Rolls Royce was of better quality but Packard made some small changes to the design for ease of mass production. The big major difference between the packard and rolls royce built merlins from what I read is the prop shaft, the splines are different. Britian got a surplus of packard merlins and had to special build special variants or Spitfire for them.
