I'm not sure if he should keep them short, or not--the actual speed of info conveyance is quite amazing, on its own. Like I'm reading those Prit Buyar books about the Eastern Front, and your brain glazes over, some places.

@anyasis5720
@anyasis5720 3 жыл бұрын
I disagree and here’s why: Technically it is known as Operation Anvil but to state that that’s it’s more known name is simply incorrect. Operation Anvil was only named as such for it was to be carried out alongside Operation Sledgehammer (now known as Operation Overlord) but due to a lack of available resources it was called off. Whens’t the allies saw that they didn’t have sufficient resources to supply the allies due to the ports in Normandy being clogged up they decided to reconsider on Anvil and then finally went through with it. Two Weeks prior to its execution they decided to rename it to Operation Dragoon as it really doesn’t make sense anymore as it no longer coincided with Sledgehammer. So not only was it not known as Anvil during its execution it also has been called Dragoon for much more time.

Which may point to one of the reasons why the British and French troops to hold out as long as they did in 1940. If the Allies avoided the region, it must have defensible terrain. Which then suggests there were valid reasons for the halt order in 1940 as well.

it's so cool having a personal connection to one of the bubbles on the map. My grandfather was in the 35th Infantry Division and was wounded in the Battle of Nancy. For the rest of his life he did not want any of his children or grandchildren joining the military and encouraged my older uncles to register as conscientious objectors to avoid the draft (which they did), though he was proud of my cousin who served in Iraq.

I think this helped me to understand why the allies thought that Market Garden would be a success, from this perspective it does look like the western front is completely broken and that it would have led to a significant shortening of the war.
@willkp50
@willkp50 3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, I think Market Garden did have a real possibility of success. It just happened to be that everything that could have possible gone wrong went wrong. It’s impressive how close they got to crossing the Rhine considering how many factors had been tipped in the German’s favour.
@DeepCFisher

@@willkp50 ive heard it mentioned tho that allied planners ignored dutch partisans and geographic knowledge so there there was a great chance of the overall plan succeeding, just not as it happened
@willkp50
@willkp50 3 жыл бұрын
@@DeepCFisher Yes that is true. However, I think that despite that, the plan could have succeeded had it not been for the weather, the 82nd failing to take Nijmegen bridge and the SS at Arnhem (all of these combined). Furthermore, I think that you can explain Allied ignorance through political concerns. The British were growing (imo understandably) increasingly worried due to their lack of forces on the Western front and feared that despite fighting since the beginning of the war, the Americans would overshadow them in the peace conference (as they ultimately did). Furthermore, the British had essentially run out of manpower and so were desperate for a successful, British led operation which could shorten the war. While this doesn’t excuse the operational failings of the British high command, it does explain why everyone was so willing to back Market Garden

At worst,it would have been a much harder and slower attritional warfare if Germans brought their reserves in time which were held near Calais to counter landing they thought would have actually been main one (Huan Puyol, double agent working in Britain fooled them with false reports of such landing, calling Normandy merely a diversion).

That was the only way tho, putting less men would've made them vulnerable to counter offensives, and a strong force was needed to push hard and keep the Germans out of balance/disorganized, limiting the amount of casualties and speeding up the victory in the West

My grandfather grew up in Jersey, one of the Channel Islands that were the only parts of Britain that was occupied by Nazi Germany. He once told me he used to go to bed and watch the coast of Normandy, only 14 miles away, glow in a fiery blaze on the horizon and go to sleep with the soft sound of artillery in the distance. Jersey and our sister island of Guernsey were occupied during the fall of France in 1940 and as you will able to see in this video, the Channel Islands will remain occupied in Nazi German hands until May 1945 whilst surrounded by Allies. This means that Jersey and Guernsey were one of the last places to be liberated from Nazi occupation.

@@woodlandnetwork8575 That's true, indeed Hitler used like 10% of the total Atlantic Wall budget to super fortify those islands, as they were the only British soil the German occupied. Was a huge waste, as the Allies simply skipped those and let them "rot" while they aimed for Berlin.

This was an absolutey excellent video, and more specifically I appreciate a lot the emphasis you put on the harbours of Brittany and the Atlantic pockets which had a vital importance for continued german submarine warfare. You made a "flashback" to show the landing in Southern France... Maybe make another (few seconds-long) small flashback to show the bloody taking of the port of Brest in Brittany, which discouraged the US troops from taking Lorient which held as a submarine port until the end of the war? This way the videos would be truly complete (and it's also an interesting fact that some people don't know)... :)

Still I'm amazed by how many people in the other videos about the eastern front say "OMG 1.1:1 SoViEt HoRdEs!" while on the western front the germans were constantly outnumbered, and especially during the invasion of Germany they were outnumbered 4:1 (a ratio that they never experienced on the eastern front) people don't even blink an eye ahahahahaha

As soon as I saw the video I immediately clicked on it. I loved this video... but let me point a mistake I noticed. Check the video at 1:09 , the German 17th division must be colored in black, as it was the 17th SS Panzergrenadier division. I know very well, I've been there myself in 2010. The famous Battle of Bloody Gulch depicted in HBO Band of Brothers involved elements of that division too.
