Our guest today is journalist and author Tony Redding who interviewed fifty veterans of the Chindit expeditions for his book. Tony will talk about the men of the Chindits, sharing their accounts of the bitter and costly battles and the final, wasteful weeks, when men were forced to continue fighting long after their health and strength had collapsed. This show will focus on the indomitable spirit of the men, their endurance and horrific nature of jungle fighting in Burma.

My father Arthur Clarke, served with the 2nd Battalion Royal Leicestershire Regiment, from first advance to Bengazi, through Crete and Burma as a part of the Chindits, he was platoon Sargent by the time he arrived in Burma. He was one of the one's who went in on foot to prepare the landing strips for the main force.

My dad was a Chindit... he was a RAF hurricane pilot... sent to defend Singapore... was the last aircraft out of there as the Japanese took it... ran out of fuel and force landed in the sumatra straits.. finally making his way to Ceylon via djakarta... with no aircraft he volunteered to join the chindits.... as an RAF liaison officer... the first expedition.... after returning he spent the rest of the war flying hurricanes out of Imphal in ground attack against the Japanese

Thankyou for covering The Chindits, my Great Uncle was a Chindit in Wingates 3rd Column under Mad Mike Calvert. I had several discussions with him before he passed away ... I came away with the impression that he felt they were forgotten and few cared about their contribution to the war. I have some images of him during campaign and my Grandfather was also serving in Burma with the British Army at the time. What they endured and suffered, few can begin to comprehend.

A really informative presentation and such a knowledgeable guest. My grandfather was in Burma with the RAF. My father served in the British army and we lived at Waterbeach barracks for a period. For 3 or 4 years there was a Burma Star day event every summer at the base with air displays and military demonstrations etc... Thanks again for another engaging episode.

Thoroughly enjoyed the video. One of my relatives served as an officer with the 2nd Battalion of the King's Own Royal Regiment, and was killed during an artillery bombardment on the stronghold codenamed Blackpool during Operation Thursday. There is quite an interesting story of a soldier of the 3/2nd Gurkha Rifles being left behind during Operation Longcloth. He was unknowingly picked up by a 16th brigade patrol during Operation Thursday. It was thought that he was a Japanese soldier so was brought back the the column where they discovered that he was infected a Gurkha. I have spoken to a Chindit veteran who recently turned 100 and he walks with no aids and still drives, which is quite remarkable.

Two of my uncles served in the Chindits. Eric Manual and Walter Manuel. Only Walter survived. My mother who was 7 years old and living in Burma when the Japanese invaded has written a book of her early life including her trek out of Burma . I have a few copies left of her story “Burma and Beyond “ if anyone is interested in reading it.

@ 36:15, I was reading " Behind Japanese Lines , with the OSS in Burma" by Richard Dunlop, and he recounts a story of an OSS soldier who had a leach crawl up his urethra. And one of the Katchin Rangers made two small slivers of Bamboo and inserted them inside in order to remove it.

Humbling indeed, a band of brothers able to depend on each other to be compassionately terminated if necessary and having volunteered for the most brutal and uncomfortable training possible as well as the most dangerous tasks. I think Stilwell was well out of his depths in leadership and politics with his abuse of the specialist forces at his command and despite sacrificing everything for the egos of the Chinese fall from grace. I understand timing was everything and Chang Kai Chek threatened peace with the Japanese but I suspect offering his job to one or several warlords an ancient and effective deterrent. We had to give up dealing with the Communists as well when we might have had some effect on them. America and Englands casual misuse of elites astounds me. Thank you and your author as ever this was most moving as well, what incredible people they were!

@@WW2TV Yes very bad trouble. Dad served as Bren gunner in the West Yorkshire regiment spear head to make way for the 8th army, attached with Gurkhas he told me that they were to keep to single shots where ever possible. I recall him telling me the only times he loosed off a full clip in one go was in training and again the day a Sniper shot him severing his sciatic nerve. He got his first ride in a Bren Carrier and first Lysander flight that day too.

It is a point weapon rather than area weapon, we still used re-calibrated brens in early 90's point weapon used to put aimed rounds on a target with view to taking it down and area weapon ie. MG42 would be used to suppress enemy.

@@WW2TV My Dad served in Burma, he never spoke about his time. Did I learn anything. A little not much. Only because I was a military historian. I am fascinated by the workings of the Japanese. Really from Manchuria, Nanking and the end on USS Missouri. Family members are JW trained and they have given me an insight of jungle warfare from a modern perspective. 1983-present day. It’s not the response you may have expected. For that I am sorry.

@@WW2TV Off course! I will be tuning in. I will also look into your back catalog. I didn’t mean harm by my initial comment. We are being taken over by American language. Eg: Listen UP!!!!! One looks up and listens IN. Luckily the British use the correct term. I would like a program on Percival and the fall of Singapore. I think he got bad press. He was informing London of the threat BUT was Downing St listening? All the outdated kit looking to the sea when the Japanese were mobilising through rugged terrain on bikes.
