They ribbed Jake by having Jerry pour actual alcohol on him? Wow, that's fucked up.

There are also people who claim that it was tea. Like Lawler himself. I'm a huge Jake fan. But he's also often telling straight up BS which he SWEARS is true. I guess that comes with the territory of being a wrestler, no pun intended.

The best possible and likely scenario is that it was Tea and someone mixed alcohol in it as a rib. Kinda like when Piper wore half blackface when he fought Bad news Brown and Andre poured the solution out an put water in the bottle. Remember this is 1996 WWF so people didn't take others recovery or recovery in general all that seriously.

I’m from a Cleveland and I was 11 years old during this Summerslam. It was a big deal locally. We were all so excited and it was so much fun. I’m biased and I can’t see this as a bad pay per view because I’ll associate it with a good time from my childhood.

honestly slam 95 is one of the worst pay per views ever. Basically everything about it is bad. To waste Bret Hart on a freaking dentist and have Diesel vs. King Mabel be the main event are both mind boggling decisions. Plus, the undercard was also trash. Aside from Hakushi vs. 123 Kid, nothing is good. Having the likes of The Blu Brothers, Bob Holly, and BARRY HOROWITZ on a Summerslam is insane when you have people like Yokozuna, Davey Boy Smith, Owen Hart, Bam Bam Bigelow, and even King Kong Bundy not on the card. And I haven’t even mentioned Alondra Blayze losing the world title to Bertha Faye in three minutes. Absolutely atrocious. The only great thing is the ladder match, but even that’s sad to think that the only good match is one they already did. I’d rather just watch their Mania match. Well, as you can see from how much I’ve wrote, I do not particularly like Slam 95. I think it’s with December to Dismember and Great American Bash 2004 in terms of worst pay per views ever. And lastly, Slam 96 is actually decent. Boring PPV up until the last two matches, but both of them deliver and carry it to an alright event.

I remember when my friends and I started getting back into wrestling around this time after losing interest following WM 7. We started to realize that WCW was now the top promotion, and we all decided that whichever company Mean Gene was working for must be the better company.🎤

I think even if WCW “won” the war AOL Time Warner would have still shut it down. WCW lost its biggest defender in Ted Turner because of the merger and the new leaders didn’t want wrestling
@TheRealAhoy
@TheRealAhoy Жыл бұрын
Well, that's dependant on things. Wrestling might not have been preferable but if it was doing mega numbers wiggle room would have been made. WCW just happened to be at its most worthless when it all went down so it was fighting a losing battle being enticing in the boardroom.
@jasonking3182
@jasonking3182 Жыл бұрын
@@TheRealAhoy The way WCW was nested in the larger AOL Time Warner company really made it hard for them to turn a lasting profit. They had to do Thunder for free, it was nothing but an extra cost to them. If WCW was like AEW a separate company with possibly an ownership stake for Time Warner than I think it could have lasted in the long term

I don't care how much I hated a company. If it makes me money it's staying that's just good business. Losing 60 million dollars in i think 2000 with only more to be lost plus the ridiculous contracts that would need restructuring. There was literally nobody over in early 2001 besides maybe Steiner and Booker. They failed because they thought the 97' 98' money would continue to come while slapping all their fans and driving them to watch Raw.
@tafua_a
@tafua_a 8 ай бұрын
Here's the thing: when the thing you don't like makes money, the thing you don't like stays on until you find a good excuse. SmackDown! in my country was picked up by a station that also didn't like wrestling. However, it was a smash hit and it stayed on for years, only getting canceled when the Benoit tragedy happened. WCW was a niche product watched by a demographic that AOL didn't target and that was losing the network a boatload of money.

Not having Bret on this card more than likely wrecked any chance that this PPV would have to being good. Bret hadn't had a great SummerSlam since '94 when he beat Owen in a cage match. In '95, he faced the future Kane, however Bret being on the card would have helped the undercard or he could have been the referee in HBK/Vader and it could have built heat for the feud with HBK later on. Yes, Bret was a free agent but he didn't want to end up in WCW. He would have resigned with the WWF to help them in the fight against WCW. Who would Bret had faced, had he wrestled? Maybe that feud with Stone Cold could have started then.

The story with Mero and Goldust originally was that Marlena wanted Sable as her "pet". So, she sent Goldust to take out Mero. When Mero and Goldust first fought on Raw, Marlene kept looking over Sable, licking her lips, and motioning her hands over how curvy Sable was. But the story goes that Bret Hart didn't dig the lesbian thing, so it got switched to Goldust having a fetish for Sable instead. And it went downhill from there

Austin had faced mid-carders for most of his Ringmaster/Early Stone Cold run. So, his reverse squash win against Yoko was so he could say he beat a 2-time WWF champion. What's even more ridiculous? Yoko actually got a title shot on Raw the next night against Michaels. They even had ol' James E. Cornette cut a promo claiming Yoko had come back to the fold. So, the 1996 KOR gets no title shot and gets a hokey win on the Free-For-All. Yet, the beached-whale that just lost gets a crack at the gold?

My theory for why Summerslam is usually better than Wrestlemania? Wrestlemania overdoes it and drains the life out of the crowd because JESUS CHRIST 8 hours of wrestling in one night is just too much! Vince Mcmahon gives too much attention to Wrestlemania. He overstuffs it with celebrities, gimmick matches, and nostalgia acts. His personal favorites go high on the card. He doesn't care as much to do this to Summerslam and it ends up being in the Goldilocks zone of wrestling as a result. Vince Mcmahon is truly his own worst enemy.

Take the ladder match out of Summerslam 95 and it’s a total dumpster fire. 1996 was much better, even with Shawn throwing a tantrum toward the end of the main event, and the alcohol angle with Jake.

Wasn't Owen going to challenge Ahmed Johnson for the IC Championship but Ahmed was injured hence Savio replacing Ahmed
@MCWAY1
@MCWAY1 Жыл бұрын
No. Faarooq was supposed to challenge Ahmed Johnson. Instead, they just had Faarooq and Sunny cut a promo at SummerSlam with Tod Pettingill. Faarooq was angry that Gorilla Monsoon didn't award him the IC belt, since he injured Johnson. And Pettingill announced there would be a tournament to crown a new IC champion. Plus, the last 4 men of the Battle Royal to determine #1 contender for the WWF title (After Vader) would fight it out to see who would replace Ahmed Johnson for that spot. Needless to say, Vince McMahon was high on Ahmed Johnson. Might he have been the first black WWF champion, instead of Rock, had he not been such an injury-prone botch machine?

If I was in Vader’s shoes, I would have punched Shawn Michaels in the face for legitimately kicking him in the head. Man, Shawn was such a jerk back then 😡

Vader has lost a lot of his confidence by that point. He needed his job and punching Shawn is a quick way to get fired. Shawns face would have disintegrated from one punch from Vader though. 😂😂

I agree about Shawn being a jerk. I can't watch much of his stuff (primarily the '95-'98 stuff; i love the Rockers) because of his personality back in the day. But Vader came into the WWF thinking he could stiff his way through, like he usually did. Only this time it would have been smarter to just play along.

Vader in real life was a very gentle person. Hurting someone on purpose, whether they deserved it or not, is about the last thing he would do.
@towserfm
@towserfm Жыл бұрын
@@Rob_Thorsman I guess all the wrestlers who complained about him being kind of a stiff jerk are liars then? Look, I respect all of them tremendously, but people like Vader, Hansen, Brody and all those guys were bullies. And they hurt plenty of people intentionally. Or were reckless in the ring, which is kinda willingy accepting the possibility of injury. Where is the art when you just hit each other in the face for real? I would think that if you were a wrestler this would be the most unprofessional thing to do. There's a difference between being snug and throwing potatoes.
