In regards to the Monsoon tombstone comment, it would seem that was actually the name of the move before Taker started using it. I recently watched a match from the early 70s, Andre the Giant used it and the commentator yelled "TOMBSTONE PILEDRIVER!!!"
@ChaosTheory9

@@FreneticZetetic It probably predates André but he certainly used it, as its a great move for extremely tall wrestlers, although ironically the Big Show didn't use it, probably because of his concurrency on the card with Taker. Fit Finlay used it before the Undertaker I believe, and Dynamite Kid used it in Japan in the 80s. Correct me if I'm wrong of course. I believe it is generally considered less safe than a sit-down piledrive because the opponent's head is not secured between the performing wrestler's thighs and the grip strength required to keep them from slipping down to where their head is in danger. Just look at the one Taker delivers to Koko, he tucks his head into Mark's groin to avoid being spiked.

If anyone else tried the Undertaker gimmick, it would have failed. No question, no arguments, Mark Calaway is the reason the gimmick worked. That said, Paul Bearer also deserves a lot of credit to, as he was perfect as the manager and helped get the act even more over.

Arguments: anyone who was big, talented in the ring, committed to their work, and had the personality of a cadaver could have pulled off the role. The Undertaker gimmick succeeded because of overt AND subconscious association of the character with our own mortality.

@@yeoshow1984 I forgot about barbarian being sent there. I seen it on, I think a KZbin video or something, haku in an interview had talking about it. As a kid barbarian was always one that stuck out to me and I always wondered why he never got a better push or why he was never more successful. Dino looked like a monster but he had very little charisma compared to the rest and then don't get me started on earthquake. I think he could have been a superstar after working with Hogan. But in turn I think that's what stopped him along with the warriors worthless ass. Oh and haku always scared the s*** out of me when I was a kid, more so after he put on all that size in WCW. Sorry I keep on going but another guy is Warlord. I just don't get it. Like I said you know bravo he was what it was. John was the man and the other two had the mystique and had such stoic traits they didn't need personality. I mean look at undertaker for an example. Only thing I can think of is that steroid scandal ruin the early 90s wrestling in so many ways. Vince should have gone to being sports entertainment way before he did. You wouldn't even have had to announce it.

This may sound weird, but I think a big part of what "made" the Undertaker early on was when they added the bell toll to the beginning of his theme. It wasn't overdone the way his more modern themes have it, very subtle, very deep, very eerie. People say all the time "He was a zombie mortician, how could that get over?!", but in an era of screaming coke-fueled promos, just that single sound told the entire audience "This guy is VERY different from everybody else on this roster. Pay attention."
@glennwelsh9784

It certainly helped get the crowd's attention. It's just like how Stone Cold's entrance just wouldn't be the same without the sound of the glass breaking at the beginning. They both have that element of instant recognition the moment you hear them.

TheAPTGamer Oh yeah, look at wcw from 1994 (when Hogan arrived) and on to the present. Or tna from 2010 on (when Hogan arrived there) and look at the last 10 years of wwe (when cena went on top)... Three of the most disturbing pathetic ruining of wrestling companies ever in wrestling history... And things continue to stagnate even more, become more stale, more pg, more alienating to hardcore real wrestling fans. More killing of the talent pool and holding back everybody but cena. More lack of building stars (unless they are dumbed down cartoon big guy look super goofs who can't wrestle or talk like reigns or shitmus), more regression into doing the same tired matches and concepts 5 billion times and not even trying to get better... More shilling networks, apps, pg failed toys and actors/singers that nobody wants. They are losing fans by the moment and yet still two guys are very much involved in wrestling's demise present day. Hogan and cena. Not to mention what those two goofballs have done to the careers and lives of many others in this business just for them to get ahead and stay there!

I like this format of Survivor Series way more then the current one, the feuds unlike stated in the video that they were "thrown together" were actually intertwined, for example. The Texas Tornado was feuding with Mr Perfect at the time for the IC belt, and Demolition at one time came in to beat the Texas Tornado up after a win, then LOD came out for the save, thus setting up the feud with Demolition. I liked how each team member on each team had a bone to pick with each member on the opposite side, LOD with Demolition for the tag team titles, and Mr Perfect and Texas Tornado for the IC title. And it;s no different on all the other teams. the feuds didn't start for the Survivor Series sake but where a continuation from the fueds earlier in the year, unlike nowadays where it's like "Well we beat eachother half to death on RAW or SmackDown every night but that has to stop because of the Survivor Series, but feel free to beat each other up again afterwards"

59:29 There's no way Mark Calaway would have had the great career he's had if they'd given him the Gooker gimmick like it was rumoured instead of the Undertaker gimmick. Poor Hector Guerrero though. His brothers were famous Mexican wrestlers and his youngest brother Eddie went on to become a WWE star but in the then WWF Hector was infamous for dressing up as a turkey and dancing in the ring with Gene Okerlund.

The ad break questionarium actually made me cry. I immediately flashed back to the age i was seeing that commercial. I then realized my mom bought me every single item in that commercial. She had no money. I remember vividly getting the ring. I remember being the only kid in my neighborhood that had anything to play with really. Those exact wrestlers lost some limbs, and took some lumps. But, it made me realize how much harder my mom tried than literally everyone else's around me. Cheers guys. So close to the real thing.... it's like bein' in the ring!!!!

Man, I miss this era when the four-on-four Survivor Series matches were still fairly new and felt like a big deal despite not having any real meaning or stakes to them at all. These days, it's too obvious to see that the matches mean nothing. Who gives a shit about Brand vs. Brand matches? What are they wrestling for? Bragging rights? What's to brag about when the rosters change annually with the Draft or just randomly whenever Creative decides? There'a no brand loyalty to be proud of when AJ Styles or Braun Strowman bounce from brand to brand every other month.

P. S. In Allentown Pa. in 1968 , my friend was spit in the face by the Magnificent Mula , at the Allentown High School Little Palestra event . He had his Jr. High School letter sweater for wrestling on and took a chance and lost . He never washed his face again !

This was one of the 3 VHS tapes I watched over and over as a kid (so from about 94-97, the others were Wrestlemania 9 & Royal Rumble 92, so this is the one I watched the most). So the idea of having a "show booked into itself" actually worked really well for me, I didn't have context anyways. The Bret Hart mark in me was heartbroken, but I still remember laughing my little ass off at Warrior's initial promo when he gets talking too fast and basically just says "falalalala rest". Great fun.

Twitchanator92 I think Jim Hellwig and Steve Borden (sting) worked with the von Erich in WCCW as the Dingo Warriors then when watts bought WCCW they were the few that went to watts and changed there name to the Blade runners, After Kerry's brother David passed in Japan it was rumored that David was next in line to be NWA champion. since he passed away Kerry beat flair for the NWA world title in front of 40,000 at texas stadium. Kerry wasn't responsible enough to keep the title due to consistly missing dates and rumored drug abuse and dropped the title right back to aflair 3 weeks later. at that time Jim Hellwig had really short hair , eventually coping Kerry perm mullet. They both had similar body builds (that Vince loves) Kerry promos are the so bad throughout his career that some wonder if he might be slightly retarded, even Jim is a better promo. history repeats itself as Kerry wins the IC belt in the WFF but drops it very fast to mr. perfect. don't take his wrestling skills for granted because he did it all with 1 foot, but he couldn't stay sober, watch his match on you tube when he is wasted. both could have been the one to take the torch from hogan but we know Jim failed and Kerry took his own life just a couple years later

Hogan dominated the company in the 80's. To think about how many guys could've got pushes if Hogan didn't hog nearly every main event is infuriating. Rick Rude and Mr. Perfect could've got heel pushes but were relegated to the IC belt. Ted DeBiase was essentially given his own Million Dollar Championship to make up for Hogan holding the belt for so long. Warrior and Macho Man were damn lucky to have held the belt for any length

Hogan grandstanding in the grand finale is absolutely outrageous 😂 assists Santana pinning Warlord stays in ring while 3 count happens, pins Roma after kicking out of the Power Plex, pins DiBiase, beats shit out of Martel so he runs away, powerslams Hercules so Warrior can finish the job and gets in the ring and counts while Warrior gets the pin! 😂😂😂 Hogan was out of control that night! Totally undermining the actual Champion. Warrior run never stood a chance with Hogan manipulating in the background.

I will always find it funny how WWE fucked themselves into a kayfabe corner by not having any real way of determining the "Grand Finale Match of Survival" without being able to acknowledge that it was "Faces vs Heels" or "Good Guys vs Bad Guys" or put any other way. So it just had to be 3 on 5 because there were only three faces that made it from "their side". Really stupid. Other than that, this is the event that got me into wrestling and will always hold a spot in my heart. I never watched it before and I borrowed a copy from friends to check out and fell in love.

In regards to Sgt Slaughter and the crowd not reacting to him, at this time he looked like an old out of place, out of shape wrestler and him being good or a threat in any way was super far fetched and hard to suspend disbelief.
