WWF King of the Ring 1998 is one of the most infamous WWF pay per views of all time. Held in Pittsburgh, PA on June 28th, the show featured a Hell in a Cell encounter pitting The Undertaker against Mankind. During the cell match Mick Foley was thrown off the cage and also put through the cell with a chokeslam; moments in WWF / WWE history that are still discussed to this very day.
Not only was The Undertaker vs Mankind Hell in a Cell match good, but the main event also delivered. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Kane for the WWF Championship is the final match on the card, and this main event would introduce WWF fans to the "First Blood" concept, a match where the winner is the man who draws first blood on his opponent. Owen Hart vs X-Pac is an underrated bout that also takes place at King of the Ring 1998, and we also get a new KOTR tournament winner when semi-finalists Dan Severn, The Rock, Ken Shamrock and Jeff Jarrett compete for the crown.
This video is part of the Reliving The War video series.

Everyone remembers JR's commentary, but there's something so chilling about King's commentary that really sticks with me. (In my opinion his commentary is a shoot). Just completely defeated and joyless and seemingly annoyed at the risk Mick took on, just a simple "oh my God..." and then "well that's it. He's dead." I was in 6th grade in 98, and this match and Kane's debut are the two wrestling moments that are seared into my mind for life. I'll never forget where I was or who was there or even little details about those nights.

One of the first WWF PPVs I bought on VHS back in the day for obvious reasons. Still have it now! Easily one of if not the best WWF show of 1998. Mick Foley is one of my heroes. Dude (Love) sacrificed his body so much for our entertainment you can't not at least respect him. That story about Vince thanking him but telling him never to do it again hits an emotional note. There's an extra segment at the end of the VHS release after Kane wins the WWF Championship and the PPV ended. Mankind comes back out AGAIN to attack Austin but gets a Stunner as a result. He's helped to the back afterwards. The crowd start chanting "BULLS**T" due to Austin losing. Stone Cold looks at the camera, nods in agreement with the crowd and yells "You tell that son of a b**** (McMahon) that Stone Cold wants his belt back!" He would win it back the following night on Raw. I'll end by saying that Triple H is a lot of bi-things but lingual isn't one of them. And no I don't think he meant to say that out loud!

Would you guys say this is THE defining moment from the attitude era? I cant think of a topper. Weaker argument: This event, more precicely foley's descent and aftetmath, was the equivalent of WCW meeting with a doctor and getting the horrible 'You have a year, maybe 2 at best. Make them precious.' diagnosis.
@zlinedavid
@zlinedavid Жыл бұрын
And then with that two year diagnosis, WCW had a decent couple of months, spiraled into depression, attempted suicide in January (Fingerpoke of Doom), but wound up just shooting themselves in the foot, which got infected and subsequently amputated. They then proceeded to just continually drop acid and stay in a nonsensical state until they died at that two year mark anyway.

I remember predicting at the time that Mankind would get thrown of the cage. Of course, I didn't think he'd get thrown through the top of the cage as well. And I seriously questioned Mankind's sanity when he wanted to continue.

22:20 the single most iconic era of the Attitude Era. Nothing was going to stop the WWF from winning the Monday Night Wars after that moment. Big respect to Mick Foley and the Undertaker for telling an incredible story

Like you I vividly remember watching this live. They had me pumped and shocked by the HITC match. It was about 2:30 on a Monday morning so that makes it even more impressive

Micks work over the course of time was never really appreciated till this match. He put his body on the line his whole career and finally got the legendary status he so deserves and will pay the price the rest of his life.

These are just such a perfect compliment to the ongoing Reliving The War series. What's even better is the fact that we are officially into the beginning of some of the absolute best WWF, these good times were over before we had to "get the F out". 😄👍

I met Mick twice when WWF was in Hershey PA. I worked at Hershey Park and our office was where their cars would pull up. Both times he asked me questions where certain rides were and was so cool and humble. He drove separately with his family loaded in a mini van. He always came off as a little kid in a man’s body. He asked me where the new roller coaster was and asked if I’d show him and ride it with him. I was so down but my buzz kill supervisors wouldn’t let me because I was on the clock.
