If you bought the strategy guide for War Zone, there was an interview with the developers that explained why Bret Hart was still in the game even though he left WWF nine months before the game's release. Bret had worked with the developers a lot on this game in it's early stages and he would come into the studio and they all thought he was a really nice. Plus, they were probably fans of his (who wasn't in 1997?). Therefore, in the interview the developers said they fought to keep him in the game and they were successful. I'm glad they did, because this game would have been bad if Bret Hart wasn't in it.

Man, I remember the time me and my brother discovered the demo of this game on his demo disk, and hearing Stone Cold tell me that I'm a piece of trash and that he's gonna whip my ass (cursing in video games was rare back then, so it REALLY caught my attention). Instantly got me into wrestling, and instantly made Stone Cold my favorite wrestler. I absolutely loved the gameplay at first, because it was the first 3D fighting game that I played, and that just seemed cool to me. I never minded the button combinations at the time since I came from a Mortal Kombat background, but of course after playing WM2000 and Smackdown, I realized how superior those were. Although the graphics, gameplay, and roster don't hold up today, I STILL think that this and WWF Attitude had the best presentation out of any wrestling game ever, including the modern ones. Great commentary, crowd shouting out funny things, even the wrestlers speaking with taunts and during crucial parts of the match. That was fun! That alone made me not mind the poor gameplay and brought me back to the game a few times, even post WM2000 -N64. I really wish they would bring that back in the 2K games, but I'm certainly not holding my breath v_v Warzone will always have a special place in my heart. It single handedly got me into wrestling.

@@truindividual There was no "N64 Control Scheme", what you mean is the AKI style of Wrestling games, that also was available on other systems (WCW vs the World on Playstation for example, which actually even came before the N64 games). It was OK but a bit simplistic (Nostalgia is strong of course) because it too limited. I think the perfect scheme was always Fire Pro: Simple to learn, hard to master thanks to the timing based scheme and the match psychology you needed, big moves get countered early one, one thing that always annoyed me in 90% of all wrestling games was that you can just pull of the big moves right from the start, unrealistic and boring. Warzone and Attitude at least had a bit of a learning curve and challenge, something that at least i always prefered in games. There was nothing worse than buying a game and instantly go through it, because it was so damn fucking easy (like WWF European Rampe Tour, one of the worst wrestling games of all time) and thus i never was big on the AKI games (they were fun in MP i give them that) The Acclaim games, especially Attitude also excelled when it comes to features. So many memories of this one. In the autumn of 1998 I read about this in a magazine (CVG I think) while I was on holiday, and being a huge wrestling fan I just had to have it for my PS1. I came home from vacation on a Sunday, and the next Monday I was back at school. After school I headed home and raided all my piggy banks and money boxes, and even a penny jar. I took the pennies to a bank close by, converted them in to a few £1 coins and went to the nearby electronics shop that also sold games. I remember the guy that took my money literally took about 3 minutes to count up all the coins, but it was enough and it was MINE! Heading home, the first wrestler I played as was Steve Austin vs Shawn Michaels in a weapons match. For reasons I can't remember I started a career mode playthrough as Mankind, but gave that up to play as Faarooq (As that unlocked "No Wimps" mode, that switched off the irritating blocking mode). I played the game obsessively for several months straight, even faking an illness to stay home on new years eve to play it. It also came in to it's own when I took the game to youth club. Four player Texas tornado tag match madness was fucking awesome! I didn't care that wrestlers like Bret Hart, British Bulldog and Ahmed Johnson were in the game despite having since left the WWF, the gameplay was that good it didn't matter. I also created many wrestlers in the game, including Mike Tyson, Bill Goldberg, Eggs (A big fat guy with a porn star moustache) and a girl wrestler called "Rachel Asskicker" or something, who was meant to resemble a girl from school I had a thing for. I eventually bought WWF Attitude, but it wasn't a patch on Warzone. The wrestlers seemed to only have about 6 moves, and it just wasn't as fun in some game modes (I'm looking at you 3 vs 1 matches). The next one I bought afterwards was WWF No Mercy on the N64. To date it's the last wrestling game I bought, partly because I wasn't a wrestling fan after WCW closed and because it was IMHO the best wrestling game ever made, Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I remember playing this in the Xmas of 98. I had the option to buy either this or Revenge, and I remember choosing Revenge because it looked awesome in the commercials. Thank god I made the right choice; I rented this game a couple of weeks after, and I hated it to death. It is a terrible piece of crap compared to Revenge.
@616Entertainment5 жыл бұрын
See? That's exactly what I'm saying at the end of this video. You can't go BACK to War Zone. If you've experienced better wrestling games, it doesn't compute.

@@616Entertainment That's a very good point. When it comes to videogames, they usually age to become either timeless or outdated. This is especially true for the early 3D generation of consoles where there were a ton of growing pains in the mid 90s. Games like Revenge and No Mercy can still be a blast today, but Warzone definitely falls under the "outdated" category. It was fun at the time especially for us starved wrestling fans who were desperate for a new WWF game. Even back then though, once Revenge dropped nobody played Warzone ever again. The same can be said for Attitude the following year. Most people bought it upon release just to have the latest WWF game. It was a carbon copy of Warzone albeit with a much bigger roster to better represent the Attitude Era. As soon as WrestleMania 2000 came out a few months later, it was immediately obsolete.
@hitek9too2552 жыл бұрын
@@SakAttack87 Not really. Revenge and Wrestlemania 2000 looks like absolutely shit with it's floaty arms and blocky wrestler models. Warzone and Attitude looks miles better and plays at a more realistic pace plus commentary. Warzone may have became obsolete but not Attitude as we still played the hell out of it even after Wrestlemania 2000. The people who bag on Warzone should remember how horrible wrestling games were before it.
@SakAttack872 жыл бұрын
@@hitek9too255 Trust me I logged some serious hours with both War Zone and Attitude. The AKI games did have blocky characters, but on the same not those Acclaim models weren't perfect and I especially hated how everyone appeared to have "paws" for some reason. There was a more rewarding learning curve with the gameplay of those games too since the controls were more intricate, however, the pick-up & play aspect of the N64 games is tough to match. I agree that War Zone does not get as much credit as it deserves for being the first 3D WWF game as well as pioneering the CAW feature. That is where I poured most of my time into those games.

I remember my first experience with WWF Warzone. Back in 1998 I got my first playstation as I had gotten an N64 along with world tour the prior year, my friends and I had a blast and of course became accustomed to the grappling system and it was so fun to play as we were huge WCW and WWF fans. So when I got my Playstation that year it came with CD sampler Vol. 8 where I had my first taste of the warzone demo. At the time seeing FMVs and CD quality audio was awesome and we finally got that in a 3d wrestling game. About 3 months later I traded a game for WWF Warzone and had an absolute blast playing it as a fan. Between creating my own custom character and going though the tower watching FMVs it was great for the time. I feel the same as you said where I feel like most that hated on this game more than likely played the N64 games first and then came back to this and then it became no comparison. Obviously it hasn't aged well but if you grew up playing it and are a fan, its fun to pop in and play from time again for nostalgia sake. BTW props on you for calling out the cue card reading for the wrestlers, I feel bulldog was the worst followed by Farooq. Great video as always, keep em coming.

There's no such thing as "fans" no more, it's now the STUPID term of "WWE universe". They're getting told to plug things and say things constantly on their headsets and you can tell.
