I just watched few of his interviews where he is talking more and I think what you might be thinking of as ego-ish vibe is just his very still personality. He is not very physical when talking, like doesn't move his body or head much. And he also has moderate expressions on his face. But when you listen to what he is saying he comes off humble and very open about himself.
