You are entirely correct. When I did my Para course with The Parachute Regiment in 1967,(and at other times in our training) we were shown old archive film from WW2 , and no reserves were worn. The Colonel and the Regimental Sergeant Major of my first battalion had served togther at Arnhem. God bless you, your fiends and the peopel of Holland for the respect you show to the brave young men of my regiment who fell.in your homeland. From George in Glasgow.

Hi Michael, glad you like the vid. We dig on private and government land and keep the things we dig up. We only collect what we find ourselfs, and have a nice display cabinet to show the relics in. It can be dangerous if you mess with full ammo. Treat it with respect, don't touch it more than needed and bury it back again.

Watching these guys find these items, it evokes a strong curiosity about just who these guys were, what unit they were in, and which items belonged to which one. It also brings a sense of wistfulness, knowing that decades ago, history was being made right on the very ground these guys were standing, and now, decades later, it's just "another spot in the woods", and silent witness to the events that unfolded upon it's very surface.

The boot was probably removed by a medic to treat the wounded foot, then the boot was probably buried along with the rest of this equipment. Or, at least, put in the pile, which eventually got covered up over the years. Cool stuff, amazing how good of shape some of that stuff is after over 60 years in the ground.

You're right, most parachute were silk which is why Nylon was such an important discovery because you didn't have to wait for silk worms to shit out the individual fibers for your parachute.

A fantastic clean up job on the QRFs (Quick Release Fittings) of the Parachutes. I was surprised to see canopy fabric still existing - surely Nylon, not silk (which would rot). I know that the Germans torched the gliders after the battle. It might be the case that they took the canopies but piled up and burned the harnesses, too. Overall, it saddens me to see these relics still in the ground - forgotten. But I'm glad that our lads in Oosterbeek cemetary aren't forgotten - and are honoured.

The para's in the period film are British. If I am not mistaken, they jumped unlike the American paratroopers without a reserve chute. Please correct me if i am wrong.

As far as I know American airborne troops started to use the British harnesses after Normandy because of the fact that the harness we had didn't have the quick release.

Looks like a lot of fun. Would be cool to see the history of each piece as it was used/abandoned. Do you do a lot of hunting before you find the artifacts, or do you research the areas before hand to save on time?

Would you guys be willing to sell one of the QRF and buckle set-ups? That was an amazing find and I don't know if I will ever get back there to dig again. The last time I was in Bastogne, my friend and I found a cricket! We were astonished to find such an item in an actual battle field, especially one that had been so picked over. It was amazing. Right next to it was a Belgian 50 cent piece from the 1920's. What an amazing day! Anyway, if you are interested in selling, please contact me. Thanks

In airborne operations you are not mobile once landed... you are going only as far as your legs can carry you and your 100-pounds of gear. Further, you are by doctrine behind enemy lines and surrounded. So, you bury evidence of your arrival. Rather than each man digging his own "relic" hole, several would use one large hole.... that's why you are finding several men's no-longer-needed jump equipment in one hole.

Nice field work. However, the US paratroopers NEVER used "quick release" buckles on their parachutes in WWII, only the British did. That is why so many of the US jumpers died when they hit water instead of land. They could not get out of their parachute rigs fast enough before drowning. Other than that good work.
