@@tarikrandom7535 And It's also true that not all Germans joined Adolf Hitler's armed forces willingly. Have ever considered reading a book by Daniel Smith called "My Friend the Enemy"? I highly recommend you read it. Summary: Peter feels compelled to help a wounded German pilot, but he doesn't want to be a traitor--especially not to his father, who is off fighting the Nazis. A moving story about the moral dilemmas of war. Summer 1941: For Peter, the war is a long way away, being fought by his father and thousands of other British soldiers against the faceless threat of Nazism. But war comes frighteningly close to home one night when a German Heinkel He 111 Bomber is shot down over the neighboring woods. With his feisty new friend Kim, Peter rushes to the crash site to see if there's anything he can salvage. What he finds instead is a young German airman. The enemy. Seriously wounded and in need of aid... Continuing in the tradition of thought-provoking literature about the Second World War, Dan Smith's MY FRIEND THE ENEMY is a thrilling adventure that also personalizes the moral dilemmas faced by the children left behind on the home front.

An interesting story. Not always fully accurate as what a German sniper would do. He would shoot the leader first, then the BAR man, and or the man armed with a Thompson or Grease Gun, not private, and the German firing the G-43 would have moved his position after a 2-3 rounds and thus has a better chance of survival. However, I hope the German Sniper fired next to the GI's head and did not actually kill him. I captured a man once who I gained great respect for. I am glad I did not have to kill him. War is terrible and it's politicions who start them and mostly young men who die and suffer. Civilians also. I hate it all.

I think this is how most soldiers feel. I was a soldier, but too, we are all human. The end of the film went black, but i'd like to think the German fired into the ground beside the American. In war, there are many accounts of chivalry. This film leaves me feeling as if there was an act of chivalry here too. At the wrong end of a rifle, I think in most cases, you'd be grateful, and that American would probably think twice later if that situation were reversed. For the most part, people are kind. War is artificial anger thrust upon us by those that we chose to let lead us. I'm Canadian. Russians are not my enemy. Going back, Germans were not my enemy..... The enemy was the political systems and the politicians..... Hans Freiberger was a dad, a brother, a cousin, a husband just as Robert Godfrey was. Sent to do your duty by politicians. War is futile.... Let the politicians duke it out with boxing gloves in the ring.

@John Macmillan I'm aware of what could have happened, I told you that already. You told me earlier that I was missing the point when I told you that people want to know what actually happened. A short film by those with no basic military training yet want to stir the emotional pot. No soldiers would dare to "walk" in an open field without cover... When the first one was shot, the rest should run back into the woods zigzagly.

These guys were separated from their platoon, they're not that smart. They may be dumb enough to walk through an empty field. The spotter did call out its only 100 yards. Given their specific level of Intel on enemy positions, 100 yards isn't that far of a distance to cover.

My father who was "Ein Ami fallschirmjager", told me of a time when he was given an order to take a German captive, over a hill, and shoot him, as they could take no prisoners on the move. He told me that he marched the captive over the hill, and when they were out of sight. He told the soldier "Lauf Schnell!", then fired over his head. He returned, and reported that the task was carried out. He told me years later that he often wondered, if the guy survived the war.

@@gavingelhaar3769 The german sniper showed mercy. He had the last bullet, while the American soldier ran out of ammo. He could've killed the American soldier if he wanted to. Mercy, that was the most important thing. Soldiers are just ordinary people who were told and forced to kill their "enemy" that they didn't even know, in order to fulfill the will of their leader. This happened on both sides, the Axis and also the Allies. War is just a theatre of cruelty and horror. We basically received no good side effects from a war. Just hundreds and thousands of casualties.

I like to imagine that the last shot at the end was the sniper pretending to shoot the Americans head but just shot the dirt near his head. So the American can still pretend to be dead and the sniper can tell the other german recruit to not shoot the American because he “already shot him in the head himself to make sure he’s dead and to conserve his ammunition”. Plus; the fact that the Sniper put blood on the Americans face already so it looks like he was really shot in the face. And he can distract his new spotter or wait until he has to use the bathroom in the woods to tell the American that the coast is clear and to run back to his base as fast as he can before his spotter returns.
