I enjoyed that touch at 24:15! For those of you who never read the book, the soldiers at Yonkers were all given a device called Land Warrior. It was basically a more high tech version of Zoom that was supposed to allow fast and effective communication between soldiers, their commanders, and between individual soldiers. The whole reason why it’s even mentioned is that it was part of the reason why the battle was a failure. The character, Todd Waino explains that spybird uplinks to their eyepieces were showing how truly large the horde was, and when anyone started to panic, everyone on the net heard it. There was also a guy that got swarmed by some zombies behind the line, his gun camera fell at a perfect angle to show him getting torn apart to every soldier and officer. That’s what those noises (I assume) are supposed to be.

The only part of it was useful was the armor. Waino ate a blue on blue hit to the plate near the end, got dragged into the IFV, evac'ed. Imo, full auto should've been more handy. Grab a guy, 249, 240, whatever, sit down on top of anything at about head height. Call it 5ft 7 for height over bore difference. Keep the gun steady while you fire, sweep it across the area. You ain't hitting all home runs but even if it's like 60% hits, those hits are, what, sixty stowed kills in a single belt?

Yeah, but to be fair they really did. I think it said they had taken down thousands of zombies, the reason they fell was because they were heavily under supplied and there were to many zombies. yeah the biggest factor was that the military was severely gutted before the zombies came. in this universe iraq and afghanistan intervention was viewed very negatively, leading to the budget being slashed. this lead to supply shortages and brain drain as more talented servicemembers left and found better jobs.

Right? Most people think it’d be really easy for the military to wipe out any number of zombies but the truth is a group larger than ten is intimidating. So if a large section of a city such as New York is infected than that means thousands if not tens of thousands. Seeing that horde slowly approach you while your fellow soldiers use modern techniques to take them down is terrifying. I wish there was a George A. Romero film or an accurate adaption of WWZ (like this video:) that would show this. Resident Evil: Apocalypse briefly did but it cut away before any real tension was built.

Main question is, why do soldiers just stand there instead of retreating back and then shooting?...
@shotoguns8165

When you have firing positions in the front you might accidentally get shot if you move around without the CO ordering you. They didn’t realize everyone behind them was retreating because they were focused on the zombies. By the time the one guy realized they were alone they were being overrun. Additionally it was mentioned they unintentionally blockaded the roads with all the useless static defenses and latrines. This ended up causing lots of people to die because they couldn’t flee in vehicles.

I'd also try not to go north and south with them . Strike at 45° angles. If they chase, more opportunities for main gunlines, just retreat with your angled troops, let the main gunlines reestablish themselves as the main food or threat. Angled troops need to be really mobile.

Adding to the other guys, here are some theories I got 1) They act as runners, once they decided to do Line formations, you also noticed they had vehicles/cargo behind the second line for resupply. In static large battles with automatic rifles, you burn through ammo very fast, so having a second line not firing and allowing each line to have enough time to resupply before replacing the other. 2) Strategic Reserve, with automatic rifles, controlled firing, and a constant supply of ammunition, you don’t need as many men on the front burning through supplies and can be a mobile force to redeploy when needed rather than be stuck in engagement. 3) Endurance, since the battles are drawn out engagements, energy even while static firing will drain overtime. Like the Roman Empire, they could just rotate troops in and out every couple of minutes to rest and recover, maintaining maximum combat potential

The Generals on the frontline during Yonkers forced their troops to hold the line of fire in order to combat the infected. It was purely static defense. Since there was a large amount of media/news presence, soldiers had to wait until the zombies got close in order to show off their “military strength” to the news media. This ended up backfiring due to the constant stream of millions of zombies coming from NYC, and limited ammunition. As you saw in the film, soldier’s desperately crammed themselves inside of Tanks and Bradley’s hoping to be evacuated from the overran position. Once the zombies began to overwhelm the position, the troops on the frontline that haven’t hid themselves in vehicles realized that they were absolutely surrounded by zeke. They had no choice but to hold their position in a desperate attempt for survival. Due to the massive blockade of supplies and static vehicles, the platoon had no choice but to hold their ground. I hope this clears some things up for you. :)

If you just took some fishing line. Put hooks about every few feet and strung it across any place it would stop the zombies. Just be a mass of tangled zombies.
