I lived in the u.s.a in the 80's and 90's. I would always come back to England and tell people about the poverty in Appalachia, unlike anything I had ever seen in England. I don't know if living in a shack, a few bits of would stuck together is considered homeless or not. But certainly it is a land of extremes, where lack of motivation to work is socially unacceptable, and that's a good thing. The bad thing is that there isn't much humanity with some people towards society's most vulnerable.

Realistate agents are to blame. Speculating should be outlawed and realtors should have to have degrees to professionalize the industry. There should not be bias toward investors in selling homes. Realtors should not be able to set rents or home values.

Their tents need an extra layer of insulation and a wood burning stove inside is what it is. They can learn a lot from the Canadians who camp out in tents in -45 degree weather. It’s not luxury, but it’ll sure help them survive the harsh winter.

I agree this is sad but just giving them a place to live won't really help. Most of them need rehab to stop doing their dope. Yes I was homeless 20 yrs ago but I also was on meth, heroin and was drunk every day as well. As soon as I got sober I was able to make better decisions. I worked my ass off to get where I'm at today and that's the problem, today's homeless only want to work hard to get intoxicated not to get a job and be self sufficient. If I can make it so can they if they work hard. It's possible through determination.

Kathleen Fraser a majority of those houses are unlivable, they have been gutted in the inside, no toilets, no sinks, no plumbing, no heat or air conditioning, walls have been torn down, no stoves or ovens to cook with, no furniture or beds to sleep on. It would cost a good 20 to 30 thousand dollars just to get it up to code and make it liveable again....

No wonder people do not want to go to shelters. In shelters they may encounter drug addicts, alcoholics and meat eaters. Shelter staff won't evict somebody because they are an alcoholic or a thief, but apparently it is okay to run a gender-segregated shelter, so in a shelter you will likely be forced to live with somebody who steals from you, but separated from your wife.

They have had a year to prepare, a bus ticket to south Florida from New York is $30.. That's a lot for someone w/ nothing, but if they go a little each month, that's $20 a month in 5 months they would be in Florida where they can fish for food and not freeze to death.. I'd gladly give them a $100 if I was sure they didn't but drugs...

I Don't feel sorry. They are offered over and over to get help to get off the streets but they refuse. WHY// Because they aren't to use drug in the places that help them. If they all over dose or freeze to death the city would have a lot less problems. When kids start picking up needles and catching AIDs or another disease. People will change their minds about having them live in your neighborhood parks and streets.
