I used to live in Windsor and work in Detroit. I spent some time exploring the abandoned areas of the city. Detroit was once so prosperous and it's very sad to see these beautiful buildings vandalized, stripped and destroyed. It always baffled me that the city did not reach out to recycling and repurposing companies. The banisters, moldings, woodwork and stonework in these buildings are historic and gorgeous. I'm sure many companies and individuals (myself included) would pay for an opportunity to repurpose and refinish these pieces and install them in homes where they would continue to be appreciated. Instead, they are destroyed by vandals, stolen by thieves, or left to rot. Let's be honest. The city had no intention to save that school or repurpose those lockers, etc, but they could have had a public auction. At least then the city might have profited. At the very least, some history might have been saved.

The peach and the plum trees did well also .And that was in yards with no home occupants . Danto Furniture is making Detroit better one building at a time. Giving of their own resources to contain the blight and prevent crime is the first step to improving a problem in Detroit. In many areas of Michigan such as Detroit, Flint, Jackson, Adrian, and other cities you can find abandoned homes and buildings. Whether the building sits abandoned or boarded up, it clearly sends a message to corporations to look elsewhere to relocate their business. Options such as creating a code enforcement program in the city must be used (see code enforcement program on Fort Wayne Indiana website). Also the federal government has fund to rid blight (Detroit is receiving these funds). Tearing down old ruined properties is only a quick fix. The blight is not on the properties, it is the people blighted thru abandonment, neglect, discrimination. Establish training sites in this area to put those without college (even high school dropouts) to learn thru "Hands on Training". This area is a goldmine of opportunity to enlist/employ people that can be trained in the construction industry to: nail, hammer, saw, demolish, plant, bulldoze, operate cranes. If a building is worthy of rebuilding, train a man to shingle, plumb, cement, install, plaster, resurface, landscape these properties. It is a re-purpose of something blighted. Take this neglect and turn it into a place of training. It is what the federal government did during the depression by hiring people to build the national parks, dams, military installations and interstate highways.

What happens when the bears and wildcats move into the new forest you will have created, by tearing down the buildings? I come from the sticks, so I know that predators come in all forms, even as wild men who live in the woods. Like crazy mountain people, they don't need buildings to be lurking in the bushes.

@@Bunderwood1103 The unions killed the industry with overwhelming pension and health care legacy costs per car. Look it up. Cars are being built in the US just not by union labor and not there. New Orleans happened under Bush and Chicago has more Latinos than Blacks. It is not a majority Black city do yiur research. Have you you checked out the state of blacks in republican cities? Have you checked out the top ten poorest states? Eight of them are deep, deep red republicans states, which are some of the most conservative and have high black population. Many of these states have high poverty rates for WHITES and blacks. So, do you just not care about black poverty or do you just use black poverty to push your agenda? Moreover, not realy giving a shit about people of color. As you act like their are noooooo poooor white people, you do not care about poor people. You definitely do not care about black people, so shut the fuck up and stop using us for your conservative, Also let us antidemocratic agenda. Also let us look at poor states like TN. It is only 16% black. It is an overwhelmingly poor state. Also poor whites compromise the majority of people in poverty. Take a minute to stop looking at FOX and examine real information.

They give these homes away for $1 and they will give you $5000 at one point… the homes have been foreclosed and they’re begging people to buy them in hopes of income from taxes.. they’re doing as much as they can to attempt to bring people in but nobody wants to invest in a single home because scrappers, squatters, and lowlifes destroy it right away… maybe if the entire neighborhood was bought and redone there would be a chance to get it done nicely but that’s a far shot

Hi All, Wilkins Elementary School was closed a year later. Building still exists, seems in good condition. Many empty lots, still some derelict houses, a few in good condition. Danto Furniture seems to be doing well and is open for business as of today, there are several empty lots near the store, where houses have been torn down. The houses that are there seem reasonably well kept. Frederick W. Higgins Elementary School was demolished a year after this video. Apparently 886 W. Fort is now the Kahn Parking Lot for Wayne County Community College. Thanks to Google, I never left my room. Thanks for your time, take care.

I don’t really see the point of ‘cracking down’ on scrappers. All it does is reduce the cost of demolishing and disposing of the buildings when they finally get around to it. I know it’s not ‘the right thing’ to do, but why stop someone who’s poor and desperate from selling the scrap metal they can salvage when the city has basically abandoned the properties? Detroit is so far gone. They need to pull their heads out of their asses and focus on what’s relevant to their current predicament. Taking a hard line with scrappers and places that pay cash for the metal is asinine at this point. Too little, too late.
@allenklingsporn69935 жыл бұрын
It actually increases the cost of scrapping because the demolition crew can't recover some of their costs through scrapping these metals. It's not as straightforward as it sounds to the average person.
@laurentiad74885 жыл бұрын
These abandoned properties are a treasure for scavengers. If the city marked houses for razing, people who want radiators, electrical wiring, old planking, used brick and more could buy a $10 dollar permit which permits them to enter & holds the city harmless to injury, disease, death or other side effects of scavenging.
