Get it from the source. Wyclef sound like he don't know what happened with Canibus but that's your little brother? I know more about Canibus than Clef... When I met him at Iconz in Virginia I asked him about some of this... Shared some of my thoughts. Clef timeline has Canibus joining the military after the album, he put out 3 more albums before he did that. 2000 BC, Hollywood Stories and Mic Club. You should a asked Wyclef why would you go to Easy Mo Bee AFTER failing to do what Canibus trusted him to do in the first place? Why not go to Moe Bee first since Bis was already working with him with Group Home? I hope you asked him why he thought he could do more for Bis than Group Home and Charles Suit was already doing for him. Nothing Wyclef did for Canibus adds to his legend except 2nd Round Knockout, Canibus lost his footing when he left Cheeks and them and started fucking with Clef and Booga Basement. Everything we loved Canibus for came from his association with Lost Boyz... All his classic verses came from what Charles Suit and Lost Boyz lined him up with. Beast From The East, Music Makes Me High, Boys To Men, the Brian McKnight, firm, 3LW features, the Bullworth and Bamboozled soundtracks, all those mixtape and radio station freestyles, the Making our Name For Ourselves shit with Common and Desperados with The Firm & Dr Dre, 4,3,2,1 with LL and Some Shit with Keith Murray and Eric Sermon, Scarface's with Big Pun and Tragedy Khadafi all was from Charles Suit and Group Home making moves and putting Canibus everywhere. His rocketship crescendod the moment the Lost Boyz disconnect began. He had a sound, Bink Dog and the other Lost Boyz producers had him on fire beats and had his buzz crazy in the streets, every freestyle was like an actual song with this dude, every guest appearance was an event. Imagine if Bink and Tim Dog and Easy Moe Bee and Pete Rock, all who did Lost Boyz album did Canibus first album too like they was supposed to and kept it Group Home and within the label. Someone dropped the ball. Why is everyone but the new guy in Group Home using the labels producers and assets? Why did Clef take Canibus from his system that had been working for him up until that point? Who thought Canibus would sound better on Fugee beats vs Lost Boyz beats? You can't fail with the alley oop that Charles Suit gave Wyclef... They told him to throw a rock into the ocean and he was standing on the beach and missed. You have to take some of that responsibility. You made The Score and Blunted On Reality... Had a hand in Laurens album, you got this kid that's got a crazy buzz, arguably he and X had the biggest buzz since Nas and you know this, you hear the freestyles and features everywhere. How you put together a half ass album for him? How you go from How We Roll and Music Makes Me High to Hypenitis and Nigganometry? And now you look back and say he should a trusted you a second time? His label mates just dropped a classic with Legal Drug Money with Big Dex, Moe Bee, Bink, Tim Dawg & Pete Rock on the production, classic, you get Canibus and produce a mediocre first album? Pun and X also drop at the same time and drop classics their first go? How you fail when these other first timers didn't? Wyclef failed Canibus. To this day I don't know why Cheeks and Suit let Wyclef within 10 miles of Bis project. People wanted bars over what we was hearing him on already. Those Renee, Lifestyles of The Rich and Shameless type beats. Group Home was giving those beats to Lost Boyz, McGruff, A+ and others and those beats were what we wanted Bis on. Bink made bangers, bangers like My Crew and Beast From The East... Canibus needed Bink, Mr Sexxx, Moe Bee, Pete Rock, Big Dex, Clue & Duro, Clark Kent, dudes who was producing for him and his labelmates up til that point. Get Canibus on here bro to tell it, please... This lackadaisical, low energy answer to your question ain't cutting it. "You mad at the first album, I apologize for it, yo I can't call it kid muthafuckin Wyclef spoiled it" - Canibus

This is the most epic response ever! You've obviously been following Bis career just as long as me because what Clef said was garbage. Bis put out an interview not too long ago where he addressed his apprehension to the internet and other things, it was great to hear from him directly. His music he's dropped the last couple of years hasn't been good in my opinion but Canibus said the following thing in the interview... Paraphrasing.... "Back then my rhymes were like a fisherman's net. You run the net through the water and pick it up, then you ring out the empty net and the water droplets that you'd get were the rhymes i was able to catch and put on paper or on my computer." It was fascinating. In my opinion he pushed lyricism to heights and extremes that have hardly been touched again. His reign from 97 to say 2003 is unmatched. Minus true Hollywood stories he's put out the most lyrical comprehensive body of work I've ever seen. 2000BC, MicClub, Rip The Jacker are masterful! And although the culture didn't like his first album, true hip hop fans of lyrics should be able to go back and realize they were wrong if they play it again, even today. Oh, and Poet Laureate II in 03 is the reason we got a Black Thought freestyle a few years ago and I still think Canibus wordplay was better intellectually.

@dawb863 жыл бұрын
A lot of people (same as the Nastradamus LP) didn’t like the commercial approach Clef took with the production but I think his intention was to show Canibus’ range to put him on par with guys like Nas, Jay, X, Pun, etc. out at the same time. The intention was in the right place but in hindsight the smarter move would’ve been to go specifically for the hardcore fan base with the execution of that project...
@mohmhk3 жыл бұрын
@@dawb86 I can see why that may have been the reason why it backfired, but in terms of sales, commercial tends to trump its opposition. I met Canibus in early 2000’s in LA at the Mondrian. You know you know. He was there with some uppity arrogant kat from Wyclef’s camp and I was coolin waiting for traffic to pass. Place was somewhat empty. We got to talking and I called him Canibus and he said brother I’m Steve. He told me he was going to the military then. Cool kat, real folks!

Canibus was so ahead of his time he leapfrogged himself. Built so much buzz with freestyles and songs with other rappers, once you take away the other rappers something is just naturally missing in the momentum of the songs. Came out around the time of Aquemini, Vol. 2, in the aftermath of Capital Punishment by Big Pun who could really do both hardcore and commercial effortlessly. Canibus has no effortlessness it’s kinda like the Knicks last year, go hard all regular season can’t have another gear to go to in the playoffs. Songs like nigganometry and I honor u are dope in their own way, shows versatility. 2nd round KO was just shortsighted, LL is nothing to play with regardless and of course had the versatility to run circles around bus. 2000 BC was cool, the Stan album is just off the wall and beyond that it’s hard to even circle back on that.

That first album is a CLASSICK if you listen to it ACAPELLA 😂😂. The lyrics, wordplay, concepts and metaphors were way ahead of it’s time. CANIBUS was mismanaged and CLEF and JERRY WONDA ain’t hit him with the aggressive beats he needed. CLEF gave him beats that he could rock on and not what CANIBUS needed. But it’s all good, BIS been doing his thing since then, still a legend and he will be coming out with another album December 18th.

Hoffa, very good segment. You are the REALEST to ever do this shit!!!!
@thinkforward87523 жыл бұрын
Good segment 👍 My OG layman's opinion on Canibus... Canibus didn't move a lotta units simply because his style doesn't move a lotta people. That underground, hard-core, punchline, rappidy rap stuff almost NEVER goes over well. People (in general) don't wanna party to that👎👎 Straight up 🤷♂️ For example... BIG is my all time favorite MC 🙌 However, if he'd never gotten with Puff, it's *highly probable* that he would never have blown up. Puff has an intrinsic understanding of what moves party people. "Machine Gun Funk" was dope for the hard-core heads👍 But "One More Chance" and "Big Poppa" (Puff's suggestions) are what pierced people's souls 🎯💯 Bottom line is that if you're not focused on making people feel good, then you'll probably be underground forever. Just something to consider 💡
@Ariusfiveduece3 жыл бұрын
In terms of sales...You're absolutely correct, but everyone doesn't want to party. There is a mass of hip-hop enthusiasts that want to hear that gritty bom-bap...and Bis was King for a moment. Even the great Nasir excused himself off a remix of his own joint that featured Canibus. That says ALOT!!!
@thinkforward87523 жыл бұрын
@@Ariusfiveduece Greetings, from The Bay Area ✌ I understand where you're coming from...I do👍 But let's face facts: that boom bap market is 🤏marginal 🤷♂️. It's a thing tho, nonetheless; I hear you✊ However, with regards to people as a whole and partying... Let's remember that *party people are the foundation of hip-hop culture* ...hell, of the recording industry in general. Hip hop *literally* sprang forth from a party inside a Bronx recreation room, with Herc spinning records that moved folks souls 💯 As such, it's safe to assume that *most folks* who enjoy music (rap music in particular) also enjoy partying and having a good time🤘 The Canibus/Nas situation may say a lot to you...but I think it says *even more* that he went & joined the military afterwards 🤷♂️ Critical acclaim from lyric purists simply doesn't pay the bills, Boss. If your art doesn't resonate with the public, then you'll end up a starving/struggling artist... With that being said, I think that the battle realm is an excellent place for these guys👍 There's a market for it. Although, most people don't wanna listen to dudes angrily yelling back & forth about killing each other..it is what it is 🤷♂️😄
@7Kingsmen3 жыл бұрын
@@thinkforward8752 well Canibus doesn’t really rap like that anymore. He says it himself. He’s not the same dude. His style changed after the military. He evolved into what he is now with his loyal fan base. Not everyone is cut out to sell a lot or making party music (which he has). It’s just not his thing. Doesn’t mean he can’t.
@thinkforward87523 жыл бұрын

Canibus was and still is a dope MC. I just think he miscalculated in the LL and Diz situation. I innerstood his hunger, but LL and Diz are seasoned veterans at their individual crafts. I think if he would of covered more ground in those situations in terms of learning and gaining experience, the outcomes might of been different.

Bro he ate LL ass up early LL needed like 5 minutes to say well you said this well this and let’s think of this weak ass bar LL( well you said 99 percent of my fans don’t exist, well 99 percent of your fans don’t exist). Corny corny he was blackballed his bars was on a whole other level the way he articulated shit with big words at such a young age. The only issue I ca tell by looking at the freestyle he did with DMX, Pun and mic Geronimo, etc was he forget his rhymes. Listen to the freestyle with him Nore and DMX timeless
@Klasik4893 жыл бұрын
@@Cramz looking back at it Can might of had the better bars, but he didn’t have the time in. If Can would of just focused on his music, and got some platinum or Gold albums under his belt, his diss would of hit harder. That battle would of made more sense. Either that or LL’s response wouldn’t of hurt him as bad. It was brand damaging because of Can’s position in the industry at that time. L had already had 10 to 15 years in at that time. If anything Canibus vs Dizaster showed us why experience matters.

@@Klasik489 it wasn't the diss that hurt Bis. It was his business decisions after it all that did. He fired Cleft, got signed to Universal, and then left them to go independent and put purposely put out a third trash album.. his battle with LL is 50/50..
