On May 19, 2020, Wynton Marsalis sat down for a wide-ranging virtual conversation with Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative to discuss the value of art in understanding the identity of our country. Stevenson specifically delves into the #BlackExcellence that inspires him to honor the resilience of Black artists such as Mahalia Jackson, Dizzy Gillespie, and Louis Armstrong, as each endured humiliation but remained brilliant and genius.
Jazz at Lincoln Center thanks Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Initiative and proudly acknowledges the support of Gregory Annenberg Weingarten, GRoW @ Annenberg.

This is absolutely wonderful. What the Artist had to endure and still create such "Wonderful" Music is truly "Incredible" . Their ability to tell their story of the "Pain" and suffering they had to live with when they were off the stage through their music is remarkable. Thank you very much for sharing this.

Wynton and Bryan are at it again. They are 🎺our change agents. They help us understand what we need to do to make the world a better p😀lace. I believe Wynton was instrumental in saving Jazz as we know it by exposing our children to Buddy Bolden and the like. This translated to keeping traditional Jazz alive. Bryan has exposed us all to what happened to us so we will never forget the unsung heroes and stand on their shoulders. Bryan's work has translated into realizing the dream, hope, and resilience. They give us confidence that despite so many negative narratives seen today, we are going to be alright if we take action to save the children. As Bryan said, these are profound questions. Look what happened when Wynton asked Mitch some profound questions. Can't wait to see what happens.
