I just appreciate when people run trains the way they should in operations. I got extremely discouraged the two clubs I’ve went to they just rush ops sessions, one train lined right behind another and another all just trying to get the session done as quickly as possible just ruined it for me. What’s the point of building realism to rush because some enjoyed running fast through scenery. The yard crew I was on the same way just literally slinging cars and quickly backing over magnets to uncouple it just was a let down. So seeing a layout run trains realistic and at Proto speeds especially I really appreciate

Excellent model Union Pacific layout, enjoyed all three episodes and hope your renewed operating sessions go very well. While I am trying to build a Raton Pass layout in my basement.

Notice how the tender for the turbine magically appears at 10:30. All three series of the turbines were tremendous locomotives for their day, and I am glad to see them on this layout. I grew up in Cheyenne four blocks north of the yards, and fondly remember hearing the small steam switcher's wheel slips at night as they would be switching cars about. Also, you could set your watch by the StreamLiners as they passed.

Yep, ground crews are very sneaky when they need a fuel tender on a train. Good catch though. I didn't think to many viewers would notice.

I know it's highly highly condensed, but I feel like I just watched a documentary about the entire UP Wyoming division. I can't wait to see the what Wasatch grade will look like with scenery like Sherman Hill, some of my favorite scenes are on that stretch, particularly Echo Canyon.

Fantastic work of art! That is one well done layout. Only one quibble: the caboose fleet needs major work! Sorry, but I'm a UP caboose fancier.
@allenscottmontgomery39293 жыл бұрын
Then I could use your help! You can tell my strengths when it comes to the fleet. I have no idea how to weather the passenger cars, too afraid to touch the steam engines, and haven't got to the cabeese yet. I know there are some serious flaws in there. At least I don't have any ATSF cabs on the layout. I know that much:)

I love the turbine powered freight as well here.
@Jeff-fx1zy21 сағат бұрын
Therein, was the problem with the Turbines. During the "Horsepower race" that 6,000 hp. was great, but they burned justvas much fuel, sittin on that turntable as the did out on the mainline. Everybody was looking for a better answer, and the turbines fell short. Just like the Diesel Hydraulics.
@Greatdome993 жыл бұрын
Alas, during hostling operation (e.g, turning the loco), the turbine would not be running, the traction motors powered by the small 'donkey' 250hp Cummins diesel engine located inside the unit. You wouldn't hear turbine sound until it was ready to pull a train. And UP's SD7s were set up to run long hood first, not as shown.
@KG-xt4oq3 жыл бұрын
Well holy hell! They need to take away these guy's model train license and throw 'em in jail for their travesties!!!
@beeble20032 жыл бұрын
I didn't realise the "veranda" turbines were only 4500hp. In modern terms, that's a bit less than a pair of GP39s; more contemporaneously, it's a bit less than a pair of SD24s (introduced only four years after the verandas).
@Jeff-fx1zy21 сағат бұрын
I thought those turbines had those one note blaaaat horns the the F-units, and Milw's Little Joes had.

Why is the turban running without a fuel tender??? I've never seen this...Ok fine, at the 12:22 time line they show it with the fuel tender. Finally...
@easternsprails2 жыл бұрын
The turbine could run short distances using the fuel tank under the frame.

Nice layout, but that turntable could sure use some adjusting….

Did I see spline roadbed construction and by chance what was used for the splines??
@allenscottmontgomery39293 жыл бұрын
The spline was strips of Poplar from a shutter shop that rented from V. Basically, we got bundles of the stuff for free.

Yes -- it magically appears when it starts hauling the train. Obviously, they forgot it but decided not to go back and re-film the light engine movements.

Even Electrification wouldnt work, outside the n.e.corridor where you could run a train every 5 min. That couldnt work out west. Too expensive. The Milwaukee Road helped to prove that.
@davidcarrington92593 жыл бұрын
I love hearing the turbines, it is too bad they went away so soon
@beeble20032 жыл бұрын
They were designed to use a specific fuel that was cheap because the oil industry at the time basically viewed it as a waste product. Once they figured out how to economically convert that oil into more generally useful products, the cheap fuel supply went away and the huge fuel consumption of the turbines killed them. And they weren't even all that powerful -- the "veranda" unit you see here (4500hp) was considerably less powerful than the pair of GP40-2s (6000hp total) that you might see on a local, today (8 axles, similar total weight, so comparable traction). For a historically fairer comparison, the EMD SD24 was introduced only four years after the verandas, and a pair of those gave you about the same power (4800hp). And, by the time the SD24s were coming into service, gas turbines were generally being operated in multiple with standard diesels anyway, so they'd already lost the advantage of being just one locomotive at the front of the train. (They mostly couldn't run two turbines together, as the rear one would tend to flame out in tunnels.)
