Thank You so much for creating this Very Realistic depiction of the UP route through Cheyenne, Laramie and beyond! Having grown up in Laramie in the 50’s I can relate! My Grandfather was a switch engine operator in Laramie’s roundhouse for many years and my Father spent 52 years with the UP as a brakeman and later a conductor. Dad turns ran from Laramie to Rawlins and later from Cheyenne to Green River. At the time of Dad’s retirement in 1994, he was the longest tenured conductor on the entire UP line! Thank You Again, Great Job!!!❤😊

This is beautiful! Little fun fact - for a short time the 3943 was one of only two coal burning late/heavy Challengers to have smoke wings (the other being 3967), however the 3943 was eventually renumbered into the 3700 series and converted to oil.

Amazing layout! Was just surprised to see a wide vision caboose on the train we followed. UP didn't own any wide vision cabooses until they merged with the Missouri Pacific.

I understand, it's all a process. Saw another one btw. It's more eastern in style. Mopac had them as well but I don't think any made it to the merger.

Gotta love that Challenger! I actually have one but for the D&H over here in NY.
@struck2soon
@struck2soon 3 жыл бұрын
I can’t agree: it runs like a bag of spanners, has a headlight which looks like it is powered by a candle and a sound system which really needs to be put in the bin. All these issues could be sorted though.
@tomstrains4129
@tomstrains4129 3 жыл бұрын
@@struck2soon I’m not sure what brand of locomotive that they are running, but it sure runs smoother and is more advanced than my AHM Rivarossi Challenger! It’s still DC and from 1977, regardless, they are all nice pieces.

@@tomstrains4129 It looks like it is possibly an Athearn item, which would also explain the diabolical decoder. (They used QSI decoders which were cheap and notoriously nasty.) The models themselves are good and pull well, but need a decent ESU or Soundtraxx decoder to get the best out of them.

Everyone is commenting on the missing Veranda tender, but can we take a moment to appreciate the track cleaner pad under the Challenger's last box car?

Awesome layout. I followed the 4014 from Cheyenne to Ogden in May, 2019 and visited or passed through all of these places. The model of Sinclair, Wyoming looks just like the real thing with those refinery backdrops. Would a Challenger helper stay on that eastbound train all the way to Green River? I would have expected it to cut off at Wahsatch and head back downgrade to help another train up the 1.14%.
@allenscottmontgomery3929
@allenscottmontgomery3929 3 жыл бұрын
Our "location" of Wasatch is on the inside curve of an end cap, making it impossible to reach from the aisle. When we have a dedicated helper pool, we cut off at Evanston and run light back to Ogden.

Everyone is talking about the turbine tender but what about the oil burning switcher with a coal tender? Seriously though, rivet counting aside this layout is an amazing feat of both modeling and model Engineering.

This is the layout the guy had full time workers to build it, it’s like the largest private layout in the United States and I think it had something like 4000 feet of mainline or something crazy like that

Green River the key to the entire layout. Good yard crew Ops sessions go smoothly. Still wonder why no tenders on the turbines
@allenscottmontgomery3929
@allenscottmontgomery3929 3 жыл бұрын
The turbines are basically GP 9's with extra trucks. I've had to load a bunch of extra weight for them to pull a 30 car train. The tenders are very light and derail all the time in that circumstance. So, they are all sitting together in the Ogden R.I.P. yard.
@theknickerbocker5808

@@allenscottmontgomery3929 i figured that was the issue. Having attended a couple op sessions im surprised you guys have derailment issues. Never saw them. Well one, on top of Sherman hill
@allenscottmontgomery3929
@allenscottmontgomery3929 3 жыл бұрын
@@theknickerbocker5808 Shssssh. We don't have derailment issues:) Yeah, we are pushing the envelope with the turbines as is. We could get away with them on the PFE trains, as they are shorter. But then I have to make everyone remember a new rule, and our op sessions are chaos enough.

It looks like a DCC Speedstep 14 issue. Check if the decoder is not set somehow for Speedstep 14, instead of 28 or 128. That would also account for the varying speeds from time to time.

The tenders were added to increase the range without refueling. They have Bunker C on board. But our tenders are light and derail, so they're idle for the time being.
