So yes, Wyrmspan isn't perfect, but i think its an exceptionally good game that does what it sets out to do very well. My main issue with the game is covered off with the video, but I'm somewhat at peace with it now. I know that when i sit down to play it, im not goign to see 40 cards and be able to build an engine out of that. I'll see 20 tops. And that's fine as long as i know that's the story going in. And yes, this isn't just a reskin. There are far more changes here than between most pandemic versions, or even Agricola and Caverna. Wyrmspan is its own thing, and anyone saying other wise either hasn't played the game or is a stubborn idiot, or both.

I always enjoyed Wingspan when friends brought it out, but it never fully clicked with me, in a similar way to how I felt about the second Azul game. This does look like it has more going on under the hood than the original, so I'll give it a look when it inevitably ends up in my local game café! Who knows, it might be like how Winds of Galecrest was to original Libertalia, an improvement all round.

I like the ‘Particularly Haughty Wyvern’s lore. ‘Wyverns are normally haughty, this one is particularly so.’ That amuses me.

I'm more curious to see how this game stands the test of time vs wingspan. Will people like this one more? Which of the two games will have better expansions going forward and will Wingspans next expansion use some ideas from Wyrmspan?

Loved Wingspan so much, it's my board game- and animal-loving biologist friend and I's favourite go-to game the few times we get to meet. Such a good, relaxing, beautiful game. To me that matters more than mechanics, sometimes.

In wingspan, playing on egg points was overpowered, unlike in wyrmspan where it is inferior to cards and resources... I like both games but I would love to see balance in all three routes.

Not sure how Gold this game is. Not my ranking system but I tend to take the GMG as a strong recommendation and does something unique and outstanding. Iirc J also has shifted a GMG from what it was a while ago and that's fine. If a game does what it sets out to then it does deserve praise but am kinda hesitant to see Wyrmspan as outstanding. Looks neato. Glad J likes it. I think the gripe about the cards and correct combo drafting will always hurt how much I would enjoy this and its avian counter part. Perhaps it's a matter of taste.
@3MBG9 ай бұрын
Nope, GMG still means the same thing, which is that its a game i will add to my permanent collection with the idea that it will stay there, because it has significant merits and i want to play it. I really didnt like wingspan at all, i was so-so on the idea of a dragon version. But once i started playing it, i dragged me in really well. It's also holistically a great package, but the core gameplay alone is rock solid. Its virtually the same experience i had with Dune Imperium uprising, it was like someone listened to all of my complaints about the original games and then made new ones to fix. the cards thing is still a niggle, but all games have some slight imperfection.

I enjoy the occasional game of Wingspan almost despite the gameplay (it's not awful, but doesn't excite or engage me). Aesthetically (and to a small degree intellectually) it's a joy and reminder how far our hobby has come from the old 'games for boys' tropes (high fantasy, sci-fi, fighting, zombies). If Wingspan has a legacy, it's less about a (to me) humdrum engine builder, but more about the broader influence it's had over board game themes / subject matter, and indeed in helping games hit a wider audience. Hence it's not a little ironic that they've jumped across to a 'gamer's lore' subject in the form of dragons. I can see how Wyrmspan has greater appeal to experienced gamers - the theme a move back to familiar ground, whilst the gameplay has a little more meat on the bones. I'm not surprised it's sold well. Let's gloss over the cliched / cheesy bestiary booklet though, aka 'my 1st book of dragons'. 🤣

Did you say this when Ticket to ride Europe came out, or Caverna, Gaia project, raiders of scythia, pandemic iberia, x-wing, talisman batman, black plague, death eaters rising or any other the thousand versions of monopoly did. There are thousands and thousands of reskins and reworks of games. What made this one in particular make all you droogies crawl out from your caves to make this sort of comment about wyrmspan in particular?

God, I feel like all I’m doing is being a grumble bum, as I am very disappointed about this Reskin with tweaks. It may have redone what was missing in wingspan but this trend of using successful ip,,, but different >>>> baaaa humbug!
@3MBG9 ай бұрын
What trend? Wyrmspan is built of the same core engine but its quite a different. More so to me than Agricola vs Caverna, and getting close to Terra Mystica vs Gaia project. It isn't "another pandemic/ticket to ride/monopoly" version. And its definitely not like the Thanos rising or X-wing sort of games where the core engine is liscened to a dozen different IPs. But even then, its the first time they've done this. And considering how common place this is out there, i have no idea why people decided that wyrmspan, which is a significant change and not just a retheme. So what exactly are you grumbling about?
@iansutton74169 ай бұрын
@@3MBG This could have been an original game, with a title that made game rules sense. Wingspan is a part of the game rules, based on real wingspans of the birds. Dragons, not that I've met any, presumably also have a wingspan, not a wyrmspan. Why not call it Wingspan - dragons? Why Wyrmspan... because game? 😉 Yes it's got significant rules changes, but it is leaning on an established IP / core mechanics to guarantee a base audience (and leverage completionists), in the way that Nemesis Retaliation and Zombicide's 174th iteration also do. Music struggled in the CD era, of overly relying on greatest hits offerings, as the cost to the consumer rose. Perhaps SteveGeorge and I share a minor fear that boardgames may follow a similar path, of safety first revised versions of existing games being relied on by publishers, in preference to more innovative new offerings. It's no crisis at the moment, with lots of new (and innovative) games produced, but just a word of caution for the direction our hobby might take.
@3MBG9 ай бұрын
Wyrmspan, because it's unique and easily searchable. Basic marketing. And as for your point, monopoly is the biggest selling board game in history and it has 10,000 versions. This is not a new trend, its been with the hobby for my entire life at least. And most of those versions barely have any changes. Low effort reskins happen and have happened for decades. And Wyrmspan is not that at all. Do you complain that every single deck builder is just dominion? That all CCG's are just magic? Come on man, this game is significantly and substantially different. Why its been picked out for special attention from so many sources for being a "cheap cash in" is very very odd considering it both isn't a cheap cash in, and that there are 100 more egregious cheap cash ins coming out this year. It's baffling why this game is the one getting the complaints about an industry normative thing when its not even doing that.
