Your soil discussion made me think of Pine Island NY. The top soil is about 6 plus deep and is from the days of dinosaurs. It’s a great place to buy onions as they are known for it. There’s lots online about it. Here an hour south our soil is the clay. Lots of amendments needed.

I have an area with exact same conditions (north facing, wet, clay) and have success with: hosta, ferns, toad lilies, Rodgersia, ladies mantle, astilbe, spiderwort, wild ginger, epimedium, Solomon’s seal and brunnera- all love it! Got pulmonaria & heuchera in there too work but I think they would prefer dry shade more. For shrubs I have rhododendron (yes! They’re doing just fine! Both large leaf & small leaf types), eastern snowball viburnum, bobo hydrangeas, and I put Siberian iris, starship blue lobelia, a purple pillar rose of Sharon, lilies and a clematis in the section that does get a little mid-day sun and those are all doing alright.
