Wyze Thermostat - Unboxing with an Engineer

So, update. Since the review, I have installed a total of 4 of the Wyze thermostats. 3 in apartments. A couple months ago my tenants reported all 3 had stopped working after a power outage. I did some diagnostics and contacted Wyze. Turns out they were all in the midst of firmware updates when a storm briefly knocked the power out. The end result - they were all bricked and uncoverable. Wyze did replace them, but only because they were all still under warranty. Now, I'm happy Wyze helped out, but I'm concerned that these things brick under those conditions. They should have some kind of battery backup available to cover such a situation or automatically revert to the previous firmware. I don't know how common this type of setup is where a thermostat bricks under those conditions, but I do think Wyze could do better.

Glad I could help. One thing you might want to know, I had three of these in apartments fried during an update and power outage at the same time. If you lose power during an update they brick. But Wyze did make it right since they were less than a year old. My advice, If they're working good do not let them update.

Thanks for the review! I had not heard of this thermostat. I also read that it does not need batteries. Is that right? If so, that’s great! My current silly brain dead thermostat just dies, without warning, if it’s not fed two AAA batteries every two or so years. My local Home Depot has two of these Wyze thermostats in stock for $78.98, and I think I’ll pick one up. I need something as a stopgap until I finish my building my own, which is caught in the three P’s: Perfection, Procrastination, and Paralysis (each leads to the next).

I think you'll be happy with it. Ours is doing great. A couple bugs in the app but they aren't serious. And correct, no battery needed.

My Lyric round keeps going off line. In some cases it says that I must unplug and replug to restart it. Not great if I’m on vacation for a while. So - my basic question is if, for some reason, it goes off line, such as a power outage, will it come back on either when the router resets or the HVAC unit comes back ok? Or do I still have to manually pull it and then plug back in?

I don't know what a Lyric Round is. But if you're talking about a Wyze thermostat, yes, it will reconnect on its own when power and internet is restored. If only power comes back online it will resume the previous settings but not be controllable via the app.

Lyric was marketed by Honeywell but actually made (I think) by a Canadian company called Resideo. In fact, the app and support now goes through Resideo, not Honeywell.

My thermostat died after 20+ years. I got it from Home Depot. Now my question is I don’t have heater. Do need to do anything different from what you show. Thanks for video and your rrspond

Unfortunately the method of installation depends on your heating system. You'll have to follow Wyze's installation instructions for your particular heating system.

My thermostat wiring is w2, w, (white connected to not in used,) y, r and rc together with jumper and the back of the thermostat i see blue and white connected together. Don't see any blue wires common coming out of the thermostat. Can this work with wyze thermostat?

Jay - I'll have to refer you to Wyze or an HVAC pro. I just can't answer such a question without knowing what each wire does at the other end.
