Los Angeles a place of mystic talent that travels from far off regions or pulled out of thin air. And the home of X. Los Angeles.......

Still one of my favorite songs, AND videos ever. Great lyrics, great chorus, Great vocals, and when Billy plays that clean track over the beginning of the chorus..... it's PERFECT.

For those inquiring minds, the house is still there in Fontana California. It's off Sierra Ave south of the 15 freeway on the westside of the street. You can't miss it...

Considering that John Doe and Exene's marriage was about over at this point, and that this song was evidently part of John's attempt to deal with his ensuing divorce, it's impressive that they managed to make art out of their pain, not to speak of that kiss they shared in this video. Then again, X always was a bunch of good sports.

Thank goodness MTV played this video, as this was my introduction to X. They'd been around for years in LA, but I was in relative isolation in suburban Virginia, and had never heard of them before. I was instantly hooked! Not just because it was a great sound, but their style and this relatively low-budget video was proof that true greatness can shine and thrive without big-budget production.

At about the 1:00 mark, you see Billy Zoom on guitar demonstrating his wide-legged stage stance. I remember reading that he saw some photos of the band playing at an early appearance when he was standing more upright, and the pictures cut off his most of his head. He changed his stance thereafter so he would always be in frame with the rest of the band in future pictures.

While they had a couple of hits in the 90's on the Modern/Alternative Rock chart, this was their only mainstream Top 40 hit in the US, peaking at #27 in 1985. MTV had this video in heavy rotation for a time during the summer of '85 and it was my introduction to this awesome band

I've lived in L.A. all my life, and I'm not a youngster. I think X is the greatest L.A. band of all time. Some would say the Doors, and I saw them live when I was 12. I regret having never seen X live. Who else? Red Hot Chili Peppers, all those Laurel Canyon bands like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (not fair because Nash was British). Buffalo Springfield? L.A. guys and gals, what do you think?

Well you can definitely tell that Michael Wagener produced this (and, no; in this case, it's not a compliment). 🙄🤦🏻♂️ Simply put, this is not X. X were not only Punk, they singlehandedly invented Cowpunk. (Lone Justice was the first major band X influenced.) X was NOT a mainstream Hard Rock band. This isn't a bad song, but it's certainly not a very good one and, again, it's certainly not X. What I really don't understand is WHY, after the moderate success of their EXPLOSIVE Metal cover of The Troggs' "Wild Thing" - so charismatically led by frontwoman Exene Cervenka - would Elektra have X release as their FIRST single/video from their next album...a song sung totally by John Doe?!? 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ Nothing against John Doe here, as he is certainly a decent serviceable singer, but normally that man comes at us with charisma and here...he comes at us with all the charisma of a wet shoelace. YOU CAN'T EVEN HEAR Exene Cervenka's vocals here, as they are completely buried in the mix, just like most things in this mess of a song. Again, this is not X, for those of us who actually love this band. I understand that X really tried for stardom here, but this was certainly not the way to that goal. After _Ain't Love Grand_ predictably flopped, a disillusioned Billy Zoom left the band to be replaced by Dave Alvin of The Blasters, and...the band basically died from there. It was depressing to watch. On a side-note, I need to finally see X live.

Your comments are very well thought out. And what you say is a perfect example of the meaning of "subjective," because whereas you aren't too keen on John Doe's vocals, I happen to think they are utterly fantastic in this song. A wonderful deep-throated gravelly growl. And not that it proves anything, but I read several comments on here that approve of his vocals, as well. I find Exene's vocals hard to stomach after a while. A song here and there is okay, but a little of her goes a long way. Too whiny, tinny sounding for my tastes. She lacks any soulful quality. I do, however, really like her vocals on the Jerry Lee Lewis cover "Breathless." 👍 As far as John having the charisma of a "wet shoelace" is concerned, going back to some of the comments on here, it appears that several of the ladies find him most desirable. 😍
