I remember Mutant Apocalypse having Cyclops somehow be a massive bodybuilder, when really in the comics his nickname was "Slim" for a reason. The Genesis games got his lean proportions right, and though he was bigger in the Capcom games, he was still of above average speed (comparable to Ryu and Ken) and thus faster than his frame would imply.

I played several of these games when i was a kid, & was particularly obsessed w/this 1. Watching you play, & looking back on the newer games I've played recently - is anyone else reminded of _Celeste_ by all the nightcrawler sections? It's funny, i would've never made that connection if i hadn't seen you masterfully kicking this game's ass.

I know it certainly isn't as technical as a Celeste speedrun, but there is still a decent tech ceiling in X-Men 2 and it is super rewarding to grind movement and see the results in runs. In the speedrun, sure. In a casual play-through, you can cheese a few of the bosses with Magneto's levitation. Beast does double damage with his normal attacks, so he can also be good on bosses. Projectiles from Gambit and Cyclops are useful for certain levels. Wolverine and Nightcrawler are also good in casual for climbing walls and sneaking around. The only character I can't really make a strong case for is Psylocke - even then, she still has a wall cling/jump and decent range.

@@AFrame Definitely the opposite of useful for a speedrun but Tusk can be killed by Psylocke just by standing directly beneath him and attacking up constantly with her sword. Both mini-Tusks will be killed when they spawn so you'll never take damage. It takes forever but it's still fun to do since it's so simple.

@@Thought0Ninja Hey good call. When I was a kid, I did that very same thing but with Gambit. Tusk is such a weird boss. I think Psylocke also has the highest double jump height, so she can skip part of a few floors on the Tusk level too.

Hey, sure. What you are doing is locking in the horizontal movement speed from a rising forward-jump-kick. To do this: 1. Tap left or right, jump, and attack all at about the same time to initiate the kick. Let go of all three as quickly as you can. 2. With nothing else held, press and hold attack again. If done at the right time, you will retain a good amount of speed. It is important that you let go of left/right asap or you will lose all your speed. That may feel weird at first, since normally you hold the direction you want to go. The timing for pressing attack the second time will require a little practice - too early and nothing will happen, but the earlier you can do it in the correct window, the more speed you will retain. If you press attack on the first frame of the window, Nightcrawler's gravity will increase ~4x. Most of the time that is bad, hah. If you are thinking about running the game, get very good at this. It is useful throughout the whole run and the more consistent you are at it, the better your time will be. Check out the links in the description to the tasvideos and speeddemosarchive pages. Hey - are you playing on an emulator or console? The game should randomly give you one of the six starting characters for the first level.

@@AFrame It's an emulator, maybe I should just try resetting until a different character pops up, or try a different rom

@@iurk0_streaming - See if your emulator has a "Soft Reset" option or something similar. That will mimic pressing the reset button on the console and you may see different characters pop up. Alternatively, after you make it through the first stage, you get to choose your character between stages.

I remember playing this on sega as a kid. When you started the game, it would always start as beast on the snowing level. Maybe I had a bootleg version? Weird to see you don’t have to start as beast.

Hrm, that's weird that you got Beast every time. It should "randomly" give you one of the six starting characters. In runs, I have to reset the game and my timer until I get Nightcrawler. A-frame i've been watching your videos, how you do to get a consistent Apocalypse fight with wolverine? sometimes he breaks the loop and start his "second phase", i cant see what is the reason, also i know you do magneto now but it seems to be a glitch and hard to do properly, ive tried without success. Hope you can give me some kind of advice, the first boss on Fortress, what i do is wolverine but it seems to be bugged somehow, sometimes i press the normal punch button but the animation stop and i got hit and its frustrating getting hit when you do things right, any tip? 🙂

Hey, for Apoc, I believe if you allow him to complete two of his downward attacks, he will retreat and send out mines again. So, the goal is to interrupt those attacks before they complete. Also, he tries to line up his attack before initiating it - so if you are far away, he'll zoom over, slow down, then attack. Try jumping and hitting him with a special attack and continue moving in the direction of your attack to create some extra distance. Then when he zooms over and slows down, hit him with another jump+special. Repeat that pattern until he is done. Really exaggerate it at first - moving far away from him - until you get the hang of it. This is different than how I do it in this video, but it is a good consistent strat to start with. As for the Tusk fight, I'm not sure what you mean. Do you have a video I could check out? Or do you want to sync up on discord and share screen to work some things out?

Yes, that's right. In addition to his fast ground/air speed, he has a ton of options in the air - five different kicks and his teleport. He can also climb walls and ceilings which allows us to take shortcuts and get backup-health that other characters can't reach. He also has the Super Jump, which is a movement exploit that locks in the high horizontal speed boost you get from a sideways kick. It doesn't always stay, though, so you have to pause the game to refresh it every now and then. As soon as you see your character start losing health, pause and press Up + B right away.

Edit: didn't think to use that trick on the Phalanx 1 boss. 😯 Edit 2: this run was fucking amazing. Loved it dude! I actually figured out how to the long jump with nightcrawler by fooling around on my own after watching a TAS haha

Hey, yeah. I've done solo playthroughs with each of the characters. I think they each have something cool/fun about them. Gambit was one of my go-tos as a kid. We also have single-character categories on the leaderboard. Fun to see some of the speed tech not featured in the Any% run.
