My 1st exposure to the X men was via the classic cartoon. From there I learned that Cyclops was a simp and weak fighter. It took me a whole bunch or comics and video games to realize how badass he is with or without his powers. I love how the new show finally gives him the respect he deserves.

Cyclops is Xavier's first student / the first X-Men. He is a superior tactician in every sense of the word. Definitely read some of the Claremont comics if you haven't, it'll give you a nice appreciation for him as a character

Good question! His optic blast isn't actually considered "heat vision". It's actually a pure concussive force. So since his lasers don't inherently heat anything, the ground wouldn't turn to lava. And because they are concussion blast, they do a great job at punching through things, pushing stuff, and in this case slowing his fall.

I grew up watching the old cartoon, so it's great to see a come back for it (that's not a poor man's reboot, but an actual continuation of the story). But yes, the animation is done that way on purpose to elicit the effect of hand drawn animation of the past.
