One of the most unbelievable things about this movie is how Magneto is supposed to go from looking like Michael Fassbender to Ian McKellan in less than ten years. They could've tried to at least age Fassbender up. Give him some gray hair or something.

Yes! Finally, someone gets it! People associate direction with quality, but you can be a good Filmmaker, and the project does not work for other reasons or vice versa. Kinberg isn't a bad filmmaker at all, he's competent, but his writing on this and pacing really let him down. I think over time he can really hone his skills more.

Word was that Simon Kinberg already directed parts of Days of Future Past and Apocalypse, whenever Bryan Singer was MIA. One of the reasons why the main 3 decided to come back for this and the cancelled part 2 movie was that they liked working with Kinberg.

@@Zombie_TrooperI legitimately think that the opening NASA mission is the best the X-Men have ever been in live action. They felt like a team and it had proper tension that I think this series needs. I don't care what anybody says, but I love this movie. All the performances were top-notch by all, and the action was well choreographed. It was well-paced, and the story progressed nicely. I think Sophie Turner did a great job in the role of the Dark Phoenix. I think she did great in her performance, showing her struggle with choosing the dark side or sacrificing herself for the good side. But that's just my opinion. I know a lot of people hate on this movie.

The X-men animated series 3rd season follows the Phoenix saga between than these movies do. The movies don’t even mention the Shiar aliens or the Star Jammers which maybe for the best because the movies would probably depict them all wrong. Star jammers are like the Guardians of the Galaxy except they space pirates that are lead by Cyclop’s father Christopher Summers. Scott’s parents were taken into outer space by the to Shiar evil emperor D’Ken who kills Scott’s mother. Scott and Alex survived a plane crash because they had the only parachute that was left in the plane.

Kevin Feige replied, including AoS as well as the Netflix shows "I really want to see people who love those shows, I want to see it all get crossed over as much as it could, cause I think that's what the Marvel fans want" Also, WandaVision's director Matt Shakman, when asked about the different look of the Darkhold, said "It is part of the Marvel Universe though, so I would imagine it's the same book."

Taken on its own, this movie is mostly ok to somewhat good level, with some decent action and valiant attempts by most of the actors, but not great. Taken in context with the whole franchise, and its flaws become more apparent, demonstrating that the script was unfinished and there was a lot of editing done to the filmed footage to get it down to a less than 2 hour runtime.

This movie and "The New Mutants" were meant to spawn more sequels But Disney bought Fox and pulled the plug on the X-Men franchine, so they can introduce them in the MCU They ordered multiple reshoots, like replacing the Skrulls with the D'Bari, the space battle in the 3rd act, and the sequel baits The real version is probably lying somewhere inside Disney's vault, along with the original cut of "The New Mutants"

What I like the most about the X-Men movies is the fact that they never tried to follow the MCU's formula or its tropes, especially after it became a trend They never relied on nostalgia, the tone always kept consistent, and they always focused on the present And Dark Phoenix kept that way They kept their sense of individuality. Consistency? Staying focused? Individuality? Not relying on nostalgia? PLEASE. I suppose Colossus throwing Wolverine, fastball special-style, at a Sentinel was an original idea the screenplay writers came up with themselves. And that's just one of half-dozen "nostalgia" moments from the movies I could list just off the top of my head. And of course, inserting Wolverine into X-Men: Apocalypse in his Weapon X get-up was an incredibly vital and essential part of the story. 🙄 Also, I'm not sure if you're aware, but there have been numerous published articles listing the dozens of inconsistencies, ridiculous logic gaps, basic plot incongruity, character deviations from movie to movie, and plain nonsensical decisions in the Fox X-Men movies. IGN, Collider, CinemaBlend, ScreenRant, CBR, The Wrap, ScreenCrush, and many more have all published at least one article skewering the X-Men movies for their lack of consistency, continuity, and logic. And don't kid yourself - just like the DCEU, Fox absolutely wanted to follow the MCU's wildly successful formula...but they couldn't get out of their own way, tripping thelsemves up and failing more times than they succeeded. The only really good Fox X-Men movies are First Class, Days of Future Past, X2, and Logan. The rest are middling to horrific - including this dumpster fire. Sorry Addie, I know you enjoyed it, but it's awful on so many levels. And lastly, you should be aware that film scores are different every single time. There have never been two major studio movies that have the exact same music as the other. Ever.

Hey, Addie! The Phoenix Saga ranks among the greatest X-Men stories ever. A studio would require four complete films to do it justice! I appreciated that "Dark Phoenix" made a good faith effort to tell the Saga with as much fidelity as possible despite unavoidably necessary alterations based on the franchise's early narrative choices and the lack of cosmic build-up. A cosmic element is at THE ROOT of this story and a lack thereof in "X3" contributed greatly to mangling the tale during Fox's first pass. However, even without that background knowledge, the movie takes great pains to seamlessly integrate the more outlandish elements by carefully explaining what the Phoenix Force is, how it destroyed the D'Bari world, how Vuk's group survived and why they wish to harness this power in that beautiful starscape sequence. Rather than finding it jarring, I saw it as a natural expansion of the X universe. The single greatest correction directly contradicts the end of "Apocalypse" which implied the Phoenix Force was an intrinsic manifestation of Jean's power. The plot quickly establishes that an EXTERNAL presence bonds with Jean augmenting her telekinetic abilities. Once the writers established that, I forgave the film any flaw because I realized that Fox was earnestly attempting to give fans the story they so desperately wanted to see. Not only did they get the power source correct but then they added the shuttle incident, the planetary holocaust, an extraterrestrial presence and Jean's apotheosis. These were all accurate but risky decisions since the series had been so earthbound up until this point. However, as the license was expiring, Fox decided to go for broke and I applaud their effort. They so aimed to please that they even give us a brief glimpse of Genosha, the mutant sanctuary. Sure, Genosha looks like a refugee camp instead of a bustling tropical metropolis and Jessica Chastain is not Empress Lilandra of the Shi'ar Empire but Fox gets points for trying. Although there is less social allegory and more derivative beats, you still get the powerful duality of Erik and Charles, the same clutch of terrific actors and some extraordinary fight sequences with powers used in concert. X-Men movies may not all reach transcendent heights but they never fail to entertain. It's impossible to dislike a movie that has Jean humble the two most powerful figures we know by crushing Erik's helmeted head and by forcing Charles to stumble up a flight of stairs! The concluding train reshoots were cobbled together hastily but we see the youngsters cut loose for the first time with savage results in a brutal climax! These are the simple pleasures to be had in this film. You should see the animated adaptation of the Phoenix Saga from the '90's cartoon! It is by far the most comic accurate with Jean's gut-wrenching heroic sacrifice on the Blue Area of the Moon. The discrepancy between "X3" and "Dark Phoenix" regarding Jean's childhood is the result of this story taking place in the secondary timeline. This film should have been seen after the '80s-set "Apocalypse" and before the '00s-set "Deadpool". The last chronological appearance of the young cast is their cameo in "Deadpool 2". I'm afraid that this was a film that was derailed in part due to the takeover negotiations involving Disney and 20th Century Fox. The original plan was for the story to consist of two films, which would have been perfect, 1st one devoted to the rise of the Phoenix and the 2nd one to the Dark Phoenix. But I assume because of the uncertainty caused by the early contact between Disney and Fox, it was abandoned for only one film. Considering the length of the Phoenix saga in the comics, it meant that corners had to be cut. The Aliens in the film were originally meant to be Skrulls, but their appearance in Captain Marvel caused re-writes / re-shoots. Also the original 3rd act was supposed to be mostly in space, but it was felt that it would be too similar to Captain Marvel, so the 3rd act had to be rewritten / re-shot. So in a number of ways, this film was nowhere near what could have been and should have been. There's one cameo ar the White House dinner Chris Claremont makes an appearance, the British American writter who was responsible for revival of the Uncanny X-Men Comics in 1975 (he stayed for 16 years), Ultimately turning them into the massive success that they became for Marvel. He was also responsible for the creation of many other series including Wolverine, New Mutants, Excalibur, etc.

From what I read, basically all mutants save Deadpool will be recast for the MCU. Hugh Jackman will return to Wolverine's role for Deadpool 3, but no word after that. Explaining the next movie, New Mutants: in the comics there are several mutant teams. The X-Men are the main one, but there are also the X-Factor, X-Force (there's a joke on Deadpool 2 with those 😄), Excalibur (a British mutant team), and so on. The New Mutants is one of those teams, and is usually formed by younger mutants still in training, so its composition changes over time. I previously commented the only good things about this movie were the score and some of the FX. After watching your reaction I remembered a couple other things. First, it's not nearly as cringe, awful, ugly, and unwatchable as Apocalypse or Origins, so avoids being the worst X-Men movie by a comfortable margin despite what some say. Second, the train fight scene was pretty cool. Finally... though none of the actors here turn in anywhere close to their best performances, and most of them weren't given much to work with... the film by and large still has an amazing cast. I just wish they had written Mystique out of the story. JLaw was so obviously not interested in playing the role anymore. She was never particularly well suited to playing Mystique in the first place... Mystique is supposed to be elegant and mysterious and sexy and somewhat elevated above everyone else, so Lawrence's "c'mon, 'sko!" delivered in her Kentucky accent is really jarring... but it's made so much worse when she's clearly phoning in the performance and only there due to contract obligations. I actually clapped when I saw her die in the movie. I wish Days of Future Past had been her last time playing the character and it could have gone out on a high note instead of like this.

Only two real complaints about this movie. Jean's arc should have gone on for one movie longer. Also, rewriting the skrulls and super-skrull to not be skrulls just makes it painfully obvious that they're meant to be skrulls, but they didn't want to look like they were copying Captain Marvel that came out the same year. It's just so clear in the train scene that she was supposed to be putting up forcefields and stretching and shooting fire, but instead she's just kinda standing there and gesturing people to death. Also, it makes the "Probably just squirrels." line when the aliens first show up into a kinda-funny bit of word play with how much squirrel sounds like skrull.

Better and accurate depiction of Skrulls than they did in the Captain Marvel movie as a poor "refugee" allegory. And now Secret Invasion suffered far more from the fallout and audience apathy. The power from the solar flare only exacerbated the Phoenix's hunger for power which turned her way more unstable.

Jean is the Phoenix's "perfect host" and when she's in full control of her powers, she is a multiversal being called the "White Phoenix of the Crown." In that form, Jean can make and unmake entire universes. Its power is the sum total of the psionic energy from all life that ever was, is or will be in the multiverse. It's effectively immortal and it's only surpassed by other multiversal cosmic entities like the Living Tribunal, the Beyonders, etc. As cool as the Dark Phoenix powers looked here, they really dumbed it down for the movies. She could have waved her hand and obliterated the solar system by accident, then fixed all the damage if she chose to. Turning random humanoids to dust would be such a tiny fraction of the Phoenix's total power that it's not even worth mentioning.

The Phoenix Force also allows its avatars to manifest additional powers, especially in terms of Jean as its "host, house, and self". Jean Grey is the strongest and complete host of Phoenix Force and as such, she is even capable of forcibly ripping it out of another host and forcing its status upon herself. @@HereJune A flaw in the movies is that the Dark Phoenix Saga is always condensed down into a single movie, and the 2 years worth of comics where she's Phoenix without being Dark Phoenix are essentially taken out so that she goes straight from Marvel Girl to Dark Phoenix. No movie Phoenix has ever actually learned to use her powers beyond the absolute basics. It's implied that this Jean does, but since the series ended before this movie got a sequel, we never got to see that. Remember that it is canon to the series that the Phoenix Force casually destroyed a stellar system. That is the level of power a Phoenix host is wielding, and Jean Grey commands a larger portion of the Phoenix Force than any other host in history because she's its favorite. Movie Phoenix is the equivalent of MCU Scarlet Witch during Age of Ultron in terms of power development.

As far as I know, the x-men movie francise seems to be at a dead end after the next movie, as its production had some issues as well. Who knows when or even if we will get another set of characters ready for a trilogy. Is the x-men lore still evolving or are the comics or other media at a final stage?

There's so much more X-Men story than you could possibly imagine. Almost everything in the movies is based on the part of X-Men written by one person, Chris Claremont, and it's not even all of what he wrote. This movie is the only hint we're given of the X-Men actually being heroes. The movies haven't even touched on the Decimation nor the Genoshan Genocide, let alone Krakoa. They haven't mentioned Cyclops's dad being a space pirate, or the X-Men having a retrofitted Shiar spaceship. Kitty Pryde hasn't even adopted a space dragon as a pet yet. We haven't seen Cyclops marry a clone of Jean, have a son with her, leave her the moment the real Jean came back, then send his son into the future to become Cable. Emma Frost hasn't been a member of the X-Men, and the Cuckoos have at the absolute very most been given a minor, uncredited background cameo that's out of focus. Scarlet Witch hasn't been seen at all. We haven't seen the Phoenix use anybody else as a host. The closest to the Morlocks that we've gotten are the background mutants who join the Brotherhood in Last Stand, as well as two different versions of Calliban. Professor X, Magneto, and Apocalypse still haven't teamed up to help lead a mutant nation on a living island. Mister Sinister is still nothing but a background cameo through his company's name, Essex Corp. Nightcrawler doesn't even fight with a pirate sword yet. There are too many missing characters to even count.
