Depends how it's handled too, I guess. Marvel's Ultimate Alliance 3 does show love and knowledge towards Marvel lore, and the Juggernaut fight has an HP bar as the win condition. The big difference is, in the post-fight cutscene, Juggernaut is neither hurt or even tired at all, and the heroes can only get away because Colossus locks himself with him in a Danger Room.

Not only is an important detail (bacauset that's literally the character's whole thing) It really shows how much they did not care about the franchise. i mean take the DBZ tenkaichi games for exampler there: if you are kid goku you can't turn into a giant monkey if there's no moon on the stage BUT if you choose an elite saiyan like vegeta and co they do the whole artificial moon thing like the show, was it neccesary? maybe not, but details like that and how Cell searches for the android when you want to trasnform him, or how you can do the fusions when you have the neccesary characters on your team and so on shows that the people behind the team CARED about the franchise and wanted to make it as fateful as possible which makes the game even better

I'm surprised the video didn't address the LONG Special Thanks section of the credits. According to Kotaku, there was so much employee turnover on X-Men Destiny that Denis Dyack REFUSED to credit ANY people who quit Silicon Knights by the time the game got finished. This is a massive issue since having your name in the main credits means it can be corroborated when potential employers go over your resume. Dyack basically stated that if you left during production your name WOULD NOT appear in the credits (and Dyack's wife being in charge of HR at Silicon Knights meant you couldn't complain without Denis finding out). It's still not clear what happened but TWO WEEKS before release Silicon Knights decided to credit EVERYONE except that those names would only appear in the "Special Thanks" section. It's believed that Activision caught wind of Dyack removing the credits and they forced him to add the names back.

Anyone that has ever attempted anything in game development will relate to Julian's last statement there. Many ignorant people say things like "oh, these devs are just lazy", but they don't realize that, in game development, even the simplest thing might have enormous complications and that a single wrong thing might bring the whole system down. So yeah... Just getting a game to a shippable state is a huge achievement, every time, and requires a lot of dedication. The "oh these devs are just lazy" thing is almost never the reason for the flaws of a game.
@NGMK
@NGMK 2 жыл бұрын
As much as I want to agree with you (game dev is hard work), SK clearly were phoning it in with the game and it came to bite their asses and it wasn't just management. Sure there were some that wanted the project to work (like Julian), but when core team treats their only funded as secondary if not tetriary objective while daydreaming about how great are the games they actually want to make, few good apples can't save the project. What I'm trying to say is that devs weren't lazy - they just didn't care (with the exception of the few).

This happens a lot. Companies don't miss out on big projects just because the people in charge are not fans of a franchise. If you are extremely lucky you might get someone who's just passionate about artistic media in general and even if they are not _fans_ of the IP at hand, they'll crash-course it's lore and try to get into (or at least respect) the core themes in it, and listen intently to any workers they might have who _are_ long time fans. If the higher-ups actively _dislike_ or misunderstand the franchise you are in big trouble. They'll try to "fix" the themes to fit it into something they'll actually like, disregarding the IP's own strength and alienating their own fanbase.

They see everything else as "unimportant details". And they _do_ kill companies that way. What you gonna do. It's the circle of life within this system: - Visionary artist-type who 'gets it' makes great game. Since the game is good, it's successful and the brand grows. - Now that the brand is huge it becomes unmanageable, and they bring a business-type to manage it; who doesn't 'get it'. - Franchise becomes stale by chasing unrealistic levels of growth and risk-avoidance. -Fanbese migrates towards next great visionary that 'gets it' and the cycle repeats.

From someone like myself who is a sugars X-Men fan and which of whom bought this for PS3 on launch day, I was incredibly underwhelmed. At the time I wasn’t even aware the game was intended to have a “create a mutant” element to the game. That would have been awesome! The biggest problem with this game from a consumer standpoint is that it feels like a very rushed action game that has new characters who do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to make themselves stand out in comparison to other well known X-Men characters (this point becomes abundantly clear when any one of the new characters wind up sharing the screen with someone like Gambit, Mystique, or even Wolverine). While being a mindless action game is fine and all it just had that “meh” feeling from beginning to end. I had wished it would have been something more but considering Matt’s video here, I can see why it wasn’t. I will now want to go back into MvC3 and see where I can find the new character’s “deceased” posters! I never noticed that lol! Thanks for pointing that out Matt! :)

@@spenserbeckerszs true I'm looking forward to that Wolverine game about as much as Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 game, I'm hoping that Wolverine is as much fun as the X-Men Origins game, but with added Open World elements which could work well for the Guy, he can scale up walls using those metal claws of his, let alone pounce with animal like agility that putting Wolverine in an Open World game would be AWESOME and could be quite refreshing when put next to Insomniac's Spider-Man games as far as Traversal in Open World games go for them.

I remember playing this that it felt like they hadn't actually made characters you could customize so much as they made three characters and then let you jumble them up. Since based on stuff you see in game and their designs that each one was designed with one of the three powers in mind and it felt like the Japanese girl and the Football player were definitely going to be Brotherhood and X-Men respectively. Bigot turned mutant was the odd one out, so it probably would have been better if they just had three stories reflecting different parts of the same story.

I actually played through this game 6 times--picking the X-Men or Brotherhood on each run for all three characters. I definitely enjoyed the game for what it was but at the same time, looking back, it was definitely lacking. God, this would have been fantastic had it gone to a better studio with love and respect for the X-Men universe. As an avid fan of the X-Men since I was in middle school, it really sucks that we haven't had a proper game since. Hoping that changes within the next few years. Maybe once the X-Men finally make their MCU debut, it'll open up people wanting a game for them. Might just be wishful thinking but I'm really just grasping at straws here lmao. Have actually been waiting for this one. As a kid without Xbox live I played this game through sooooo many times. Tried every build and every new x gene I found. I remember the drops being somewhat random, or at the very least plugged into some random number generator so the limited customization came through if you played through the game long enough. But man, were those boss fights boring. Also, the main villain was just a guy that ended up getting Captain Ginyu-ed by Bastion after he already killed Xavier. So prof X literally isn't in the X-Men game where you choose between X-Men and the brotherhood. Great video, been lurking and watching old vids but most definitely subscribed now.

12:00 - I find this entire story somewhat ironic since Juggernaut was featured in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions as well, and that was a more recent game at the time seeing as how Spider-Man: Edge of Time was basically its sequel and it released less than 2 weeks after X-Men: Destiny (man, Marvel/Stan Lee sure loves/loved their hyphens, rest in peace Mr. Lieber/Lee). I can't remember how Amazing Spider-Man actually damaged the boss, as that boss fight is forgettable to me, but it couldn't have been easy as all the bosses in the game get empowered by the chaos or discord or disorder tablet or whatever it was called that Mysterio shattered, pun not intended at first. This game makes me sad as it was the last X-Men game released, as well as the last Marvel game released in this kind of style that wasn't about Spider-Man (though he stopped getting console games from 2014 to 2018) and that wasn't a Lego game, at least until Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite and Crystal Dynamics' Avengers, which both sucked to different degrees, and also those 2 Guardians of the Galaxy games made post-2014 and the Marvel Knights X-COM style game, which I've heard good things about, but I have absolutely no interest in. Obviously this has to do with the Walt Disney Company's buyout of Marvel, which has led to Marvel loosing most of its identity and soul over the last decade, especially around 2015 to 2016. Hopefully Insomniac's Wolverine game makes up for lost time and shows the world once again how amazing a Mutant-centric game can be, and I hope it won't be PS5 exclusive (and please for the love of God Disney, actually let other Mutants like Cyclops, Storm, Shadowcat, Beast, and Nightcrawler do things, Wolverine fatigue was real under Fox's X-Men).

And for a long time I forgot the title but remembered the game vividly and one day I found it again on one of my old school consoles that were chipped. I was OBSESSED with xmen figures, comics and the cartoon. I had Xmen 2 and Adamantium Rage but the best one was the original I think. When I got my Saturn for Christmas it came with Children of the Atom of course... I also remember getting the bus to the shopping centre near me to buy Ravages of Apocalypse TC for Quake... I started collecting Xmen comics from Xcutioners Saga to just after Onslaught.... I remember begging my mam to get me some Age of Apocalypse figures instead of a birthday present the next month... @@patrickrobinsob1464 I know right?! I was crazy into the comics then(started reading x cutioners saga and stopped after Onslaught) and LOVED Quake so... Oh another AMAZING tc was Malice...but the xmen game was weird and you fight these clones and all... Still it was fun but its so bizarre how the license got granted. Although Marvel were in the toilet then. I first found out about it on a demo disk with a gazillion things on it but seen it for 4 irish punts on sale in GAME and had to have it. The gameplay is so odd and the clones are hilarious at times... I recall the Psylocke one always getting stuck flipping into a wall. And the Wolverine one on hard mode would just soak up damage. It's a weird entry all right and I see what they were going for but if it was me I would have had like Cyclops, Gambit, Cable with his guns, as playable characters for their projectile attacks and had them fighting Sentinels or the Brood or something like that. To flesh out the roster have a team mate assist like the Mega Drive original so you get a secret like quad damage but it allows you to call Wolverine in to take out all enemies on screen or Jean Grey to heal you/give you a shield... Maybe Archangel flies by taking out enemies etc... I'd love some of the TCS to be remastered or sort of jazzed up like GL Quake. The official mission packs are quite good IIRC. Malice is cool because you get like these 'toyz' as in a little mini sub thing, a hover board and some grappling hook I think, sort of like Quake 2 CTF. Its a very big, open, desolate future setting and to just pop in No Target and god mode and zip around on the hover board is great fun. Cool weapons and a decent setting too. I remember getting it with some other add on and another copy of quake in a pack for like 10 Irish pounds at the time. Same day I got Dark Forces 2& it's Mara Jade add on pack for the same. PC games used to be dirt cheap if they were a few months old. Recently Nine Inch Nails, my fave group (including Trents soundtracks, the Watchmen TV series, Gone Girl and Social Network are my fave) who I got into thanks to Quake, released the Quake soundtrack on vinyl. Sure everyone had it on cd thanks to the game, but WOW I did not remember how fcking atmospheric and dark it actually was! ID said no at the last moment to the booklet being printed but Trent leaked it and it gives a bit of insight into Quakes development&sound design. The first time I put on my dads 90s big chunky headphones and played Quake in the dark... Man what an experience!
