X-Men vs Street Fighter (PSX) - Longplay

A longplay of X-Men vs Street Fighter.
X-Men vs. Street Fighter is a crossover fighting video game developed and published by Capcom. It is Capcom's third fighting game to feature Marvel Comics characters, following X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes, and the first installment in the Marvel vs. Capcom series. As the title suggests, the game includes characters from Marvel's X-Men franchise and the cast from Capcom's Street Fighter series. Originally released as a coin-operated arcade game in 1996, it was eventually ported to the Sega Saturn in 1997 and the PlayStation in 1998.
X-Men vs. Street Fighter features gameplay similar to Street Fighter, but incorporates dual-character selection and tag team-based combat. Each player selects two characters to compete in a one-on-one battle, attempting to defeat the opposing team. The players are given the ability to switch between their characters at any point during the match. The game also incorporates numerous elements from X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes.
The game was released to generally positive reviews, with critics praising its gameplay and sprite animation quality. While the Sega Saturn port received praise for maintaining the experience of the original arcade version, the PlayStation port was met with mixed to negative critical reception for removing several features, such as tag team battles. The changes were done in response to the technical limitations of the PlayStation. A sequel to the game, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, was released in 1997.

The issue was two things. System fillrate only allowed but so much at any given time. Especially with how they did it here. They got much better with this on the next two games. The thing is, EVERY system since the PS1 did 2D the way this does. Dreamcast and on gets away with it because they’re far stronger systems with better GPUs and far more RAM. The other problem, while Japan only, was enough to mess up an y impact this port ever could’ve had, and that is the Saturn version. Now granted, even that system needed extra help in that RAM cartridge, and without it you probably wouldn’t get tag abilities in that either. That said, outside of sprites that system actually still has raster based 2D hardware support for backgrounds and it’s effects. Needless to say, the RAM cart was there and with it came one of the best 32Bit era ports of all time. That’s a hell of a contrast to the pixelly looking, choppy, and slow PS1 variant with no tag.

FACTS!! This game and the other capcom vs. titles were the shit at arcades in malls, movie theaters, bowling alleys, and whatever location had local arcades. Ah, the early 90's and 2000's, back in the day when things were chill and simple and videogames at local arcades were actually awesome and accessible. No C&D BS toward emulation. No paying a damn fortune for classic games in online stores being ripped off in the process. Best of all, No toxic gaming communities. Sometimes I wish I could just go back and relive all those awesome memories again, I miss the 90's.

There is a hidden code that allows you to switch between characters on the PSX port. It's called EX option, when you go into the options switch it from EX to original then you are good to go. Can't believe I remembered that lol. But if you don't want that hassle just do what I did and get the Sega Saturn port which is basically Arcade perfect.

You partner is basically useless in this version. They just merely made them into assist characters like Rival Schools. At least they made somewhat improvements for Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter for PS1. That one, Capcom added the Crossover mode which gave you the ability to use the Tag team System but restricted it to Mirror opponents. Example; If you choose Cyclops and Ryu as your team your opponents are Ryu and Cyclops. Lucky for me I own the Saturn Versions to both games, so I don't have to dwell on this.

I can understand why people would prefer the Sega console ports of Marvel vs. Capcom games even if two out of the four games were Japanese-exclusive. Although X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, and Marvel vs. Capcom had to be clone tag battles outside of 1-on-1 battles normally, the PlayStation ports of Capcom 2D fighters did a great job handling 1-on-1 battles even if they had to do the same for Marvel vs. Capcom crossovers.

The Sega Saturn was wayyyyyyyyyyyy superior at doing 2d games than the PSX. This is coming from a long time Playstation fan since its inception. As I still have both consoles and owned, played and experience Capcom 2d fighters on both, have to honestly give it to the Saturn.

I honestly don't think you can. You could, however, connect the 2nd player controller to play as the same character player 1 is from what I checked out. But that's a drag still because it's a boring mirror match.

PH Clank, worth every penny? Hell no, this port has been completely mangled due to the PS1's limited RAM. You got ripped off and paying that price will only let resellers think that the junk they have is gold, and the prices will continue to rise. The Saturn port my friend got me for under $25, and it's pretty close to arcade perfect with the tag mode in. Paying prices like that only hurts collectors like myself who are on a limited budget (my patience has gotten me more expensive stuff for cheaper than average), but not everyone is patient like myself. Exercise some self control, don't help resellers continue to inflate prices, especially on poor ports like this.

Alucard8319 It works as a 1v1 type of game with the use of assists. That's probably what they had in mind with the ps1 ports of all the Capcom fighters of the 90s they were all great games non the less its just that people expected 2v2 which didnt make it on there. But if you see it as a 1v1 game it can be enjoyed quite a lot

I know.. i know. But with knowledge of now I can't be bothered to download the psx version and playing it by emulation. I'm using MAME and i love it :-). I enjoyed the game of course on the psx days. I rented back then the game and I had to buy it. Sometimes if you don't know better it's better to enjoy the games :-).

This was about as good as it was going to get for it’s time. It was either this or no game at all since the Saturn was all but dead here. Yeah, the Saturn did get the best port, but in no way were they going to localize it after even Sega more or less pulled the plug here. Plus the 4MB RAM cartridge included with it wouldn’t have been cheap to bring over.

You can! Just not in normal gameplay... you had to enter a code or something, then you could select two characters and face the CPU (or a friend) in a mirror match. You could tag out and switch characters, and it worked because the Playstation was still just loading two characters (which was all it was capable of).

Madara Senpai , iv been saturn collecting for a year and a half. I flash modded action replays and ram carts with Pseudo Saturn to play my burn back ups with region bypass and 1m-4m ram. I play street fighter zero three every night and I just bought battle garegga the other day. I knock the psx competitor 2d ports to the Saturn ports. Psx however is one of the greatest systems regardless, so as saturn in many respects as well

Its not a terrible port. The Saturn was simply a more powerful console when used PROPERLY the 2 CPU's. The PSX was 1.5/2 times slower than Saturn both CPU rendering. Also, PSX has less RAM, less VRAM, slower CPU and doesn't have any kind of 2d rendering sprite base acceleration (PSX fakes 2d with a 3D engine and flat polygons to mimmick 2D graphics). Although, i can't ignore that Street Fighter Alpha 3 was a faar superior improvement in comparison to this PlayStation convertion.
