Such a good and well-acted story. Hearing this makes me recall several road trips going back to 2010 at least and having listened to Radio Classics. Another good story, of many, is "The Roads Must Roll!".

Is that a metaphor for heaven or our small mindedness? Whatever another brilliant episode!! How can anyone put a thumbs down to this quality historic radio show!!!

Not at all. It's just what would happen to humanity on a generation ship.

Try the 1950 "Dimension X" version, it's a far superior adaptation. These "X Minus One" eps have 7 minutes chopped off due the increase in advertisement on radio in 1955 and also for me have lesser talented actors and foley in use than the 1950 "Dimension X" original adaptations.

I think it’s an allegory of the transition from the Dark Ages to the Age of Enlightenment.

Heinlein short story. It's found in the collection "Off the Main Sequence," a book I literally read over the course of time as a "bathroom book" as it sat in a basket under the vanity along with some magazines and crosswords. I picked it up brand-new, hardcover edition including the jacket, at a discount store maybe 10 years ago for like 1 or 2 bucks -- now I see used copies on Amazon going for $75.

Great job! I dream of snags like that, and have made just a few. Bottom line, ANY Heinlein hard cover is hard to get, and some are crazy valuable.

If you like this, there's also a 3 or 4 years earlier version performed on the Dimension X show

I was surprised that despite the age and some science that made sense at the time but seems odd now, the stories are really good. Ray Bradbury, Issac Asimov very well known but stories written by completely unknown to us now are quite good as well.

They use a proper science fiction author. Something Star Trek has forgotten.

The ending was unexpected for him to be dying giving that speech and then quietness he started playing that kettledrum like it was a concert or something .
