星 Singapore & Johor Bahru in 1938 🌏 Pre-LKY/Color (2023)

Early full color travelogue at southern end of the Malay Peninsula circa 1937/8. British hegemony existed at the time on Singapore Island and north across the Straits of Johor/Johore in the Malaysian sultanate state of Johor/Johore with capital in Johor Bahru/JB.
That timeframe saw the opening of the Kallang Airport and the British Military Hospital -- predecessor of Alexandra Hospital. Singapore also completes the main British naval base -- which was the largest drydock and third largest floating dock in the world.
Still, within a few short years, Japanese troops brutally take over the whole area -- renaming Singapore Syonan-to (Light of the South Island).
After WWII, Lord Mountbatten dissolved the Straits Settlements and Singapore becomes a separate 'crown colony'.
Throughout the 50's there's some riots & strikes, budding elections and Kallang AP moves east to Paya Lebar (later to move west to Changi).
1959 was a watershed year as Lim Yew Hock successfully gains full self-government for Singapore while the 3rd General Elections for limited self-government gives the People's Action Party 43 of 51 seats empowering Lee Kuan Yew as the young nation's first Prime Minister. 'Majulah Singapura', written by Zubir Said, enshrined as the national anthem.
In 1963 the Malaysia Agreement is signed between leaders of Malaya, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak but, on August 31st, LKY declares de facto Independence for Singapore.
Today there are two bridges crossing the strait: The Johor-Singapore Causeway, known simply as "The Causeway", links Johor Bahru and Woodlands in Singapore. The Malaysia-Singapore Second Link bridge is further west over the strait and links Iskandar Puteri in Malaysia and Tuas in Singapore. What a rare snippet in technicolor from 1938. In the old days these documentary shorts were shown in cinemas before the main movie which was usually 90 minutes long.

The Sultan of Jahore betrayed The British, when Japan invaded Malaysia. He was a collaborator during ww2.
