X-plane 11.2 Native VR test flight

This video is a short flight from SeaTac to Renton testing the native VR implementation in X-plane 11.2 beta. I'm combining webcam footage with game footage for a "mixed reality" viewpoint of how the touch controllers work.

Very cool. Keep in mind, the fuel pump on a fuel injected Skyhawk is only used momentarily for start. You would have been heavily flooded, with a huge possibility of a fire. ;)

It was closed in realtime (you can see in the first person view). But it stayed open during external replays while capturing the additional angles.

How do you turn rudders? Did you set that to those hand held pads ?

Well with the door open you can always set your trim tabs, step out on the landing gear to take a leak. However if you slip at 3000' it'll probably look like a handle grip by the time you hit the ground :)

Curious too, how are you doing the mixed reality.. do you have a green screen behind you, then post edit in a video editor like Vegas for instance? I was thinking of setting this up, i have one, a green screen that is.

Nice video.. are you using Steam to set pixel density or Oculus Tray Tool or Debug or none? I'm finding that a 1.3-1.4 is about as high as i can go for now to be mostly judder free (in other aircraft, heavy scenery situations) with no SSA turned on with my 1080 GTX + 5.0ghz 8700k.. The shimmering is a bit bothersome at the airfield when on the ground or close circling but as you get higher ortho4xp looks great on my system.. so XP has a ways to go to catch up with shimmer free Aerofly Fs2 quality, but they will get there.

In DCS I have pixel density at 1.5 via DCS settings. For XP I didn't bother looking into it for my test flight and I found the default readable. After recording this, I did another flight in Aerofly Fs2 and you're right it looks a lot better but the aircraft feels dead in comparison. Can't have everything in one sim I suppose.

Awesome video. What frame rates do you get when using VR? What's your hardware setup and how do you control the rudder? Do you have extra rudder pedals for that or you play with auto rudder on? Good afternoon, I wonder how you made these effects from getting inside the airplane in the videos. Does it work on the Falcon BMS simulator? What programs do you use to make your videos? Thank you

I think it would work for any simulator that has track replay and allows you to set position of the camera. XP, DCS, and I think iL-2 meet that requirement, but I don't know about BMS. Using replay, I record the flight from different angles. Then I match the webcam footage and edit everything together in Final Cut Pro X. Probably a lot of video editing software would work for that part.

Thanks! Web cam and green screen, then a lot of editing in post production. In order to do it, the game has have decent track recording functionality and it needs to allow you to set camera angles. If you have all that, you can play the track as many times as you need to capture additional angels and edit it all together.

In case I want to use both mouse pointer and VR touch, would it be possible? I've seen many youtubers reviewing X-plane with VR under VFR flights, but I wonder how I'll manage real charts in IFR procedures with this stuff in my eyes. I'm amazed how you did a great job in this video. Excellent!

XP didn't support mouse in VR at the time I made this video, and I haven't been back to try it. But I use mouse all the time in VR when flying DCS. So I would guess as long as you have your charts in-game, you can ditch the touch and fly happily with mouse and yoke.

So I have a question for you. I do have the Saitek Pro flight equipment like yoke and rudder pedals with throttle quadrant. Do you need any of those for the rift version. Do I also need a different x plane 11 game for VR? I have X plane 11 already but I want to get a rift to do VR X plane.

I flew 20 years ago when I was 20, then had a different career, family, etc... I'd like to go for my private license again, but VR is so much cheaper, safer and more convenient. Never mind the fact that I don't actually go anywhere.

I don't have any problem with it. I had contacts ordered to use with the oculus, but I find wearing it over the glasses is so easy that I never bother switching to contacts.

jaksongpg I wear glasses and have no problems. So long as your arms are not to thick on your glasses you will be fine

X-plane seems to be stuttering for me a little more than DCS does. But it's early. I have a GTX-1080, so my VR experience is usually pretty smooth.

I also have the GTX-1080 and found the DCS works wonderfully but X-Plane 11.20vr1 has real issues with the stuttering. Did you make any adjustments to your settings to help lesson the issue. Excellent video by the way. Your editing turns out so much better than mine. I'm jealous. LOL

I haven't had time to tweak anything yet, and the stuttering was mild enough that I could ignore it. One time it loaded all wonky where the cockpit looked fine but out in the world each eye was seeing a different angle. Luckily restarting fixed that.
