Thanks for this wonderfull video, eventhough its 10/11 months old. I am a Oculus Rift CV1 (I used to have a DK1 aswel in 2013) player myself and you are correct, some people do not suffer from VR-motion sickness but unfortunately I did but I refused to give up my passion for VR, so I kept going back in VR after my nausea subsided and noticed I was getting less and less nausious and able to hold out longer and longer and build up a good tolerance for it now. :D I trained my brain and eyes to adjust and no longer get nausea. I use my Rift in War Thunder flight sim, using WW2 fighters going into dogfights to train myself, and only just started with DCS World! =)

Great video, thanks for posting. Question for you that has nothing to do with VR. What kind of mic did you use when doing this video and what, if any, modifications did you do or have (filters and such) during the audio recording? I have 12 channels and have done tutorials for decades on many different interests. I often spend hours upon hours on cleaning up my audio to painstakingly remove mouth clicks and occasional, though rare, background / ambient noise. I search the web often for tips and tricks in voice recording and recently bought a Rode NT1 condenser mic with filter setup. I love it but it doesn't keep me completely out of Adobe Audition to clean up the audio. I'm asking you because you obviously go to great lengths for your audio. It's nice and clean and I'm envious. So please do help me out with some words of wisdom. Greatly appreciate it! As for VR goes, I just bought the Oculus Rift a few hours ago. I've yet to hook it up and have been preparing my pc for format. I want to clean up some .net issues that only a fresh install can fix and also want a nice clean P3dv4.1 install which added a lot for VR. I'm curious to your opinion in comparison of these other platforms with this new p3d release. By the way, just a few short hours ago Flyinside finally released it for p3dv4 & p3dv4.1. These are great days to be simming in and we've come a LONG way from my first flight sim on the Apple 2e (Sublogic Flight Simulator) haha.

Battle of Stalingrad/Moscow, War Thunder and VTOL VR are other titles worth mentioning/trying- plus if you have the leap motion controller with flyinside you can use your actual real hands/fingers to manipluate the virtual knobs, switches etc in the virtual cockpit with virtual hands/fingers. and the pimax 4k hmd at a higher resolution of 2k per eye allegedly has no screen door effect (great for seeing distant objects etc) and non vomit inducing frame rates- perfect for flight sims and other seated only VR expereinces (& costs less than the oculsu rift even at its current half price sale)

It's now Feb, 2019 and Oculus Go is here and Oculus Quest is imminent. As a flight simulator 'tragic' I am keen to invest in VR for added immersion. I can't see the mobile-based Oc.Go providing enough storage for the scenery, aircraft and addons I have accumulated. I don't know if Oc. Quest will suffice. I may have to go with Oculus Rift after all. would be interested to view your position in a video. BTW, your presentation is highly professional and fair. Thanks!

I fly in DCS(DCS Huey) it's the one sim that challenges my Ryzen 5 3600 and GTX 1660ti to keep up on the Oculus Rift S. DCS Huey is also the one program I have that I actually get sim sick in, partly because of the aggressive style in which I fly the helicopter and partly due to the fact that it's difficult to find a good balance between graphics and frame rate in DCS, on my hardware at least. My next upgrade will be a Ryzen 9 3900x processor and an RTX 20XX graphics card.

Thx nice video. And I agree, flying in VR is great. I grabbed an Oculus in their summer sale and flyinside for x-plane was one of the first things I purchased. And while my pc lacks a bit of power (right now it's only a FX6350 CPU, what means, I've to go a bit more down with my settings) it's still a great experience. Can't wait to get an CPU Upgrade (I think around October, I can get an Intel 7700k or something like this). Only one question: Is it normal, regardless of the world scale (for most planes somewhere around 85 - 90%) that the wings of the plane (in general, but as an example in Aerobasks Pipistrel Panthera v3) appear somehow gigantic in VR? I admit I've no real world flying experience, but I never have realized this in years of 2D flying.

Would it be possible to use the Oculus Touch controller to "grab" the virtual joystick inside the simulated cockpit and fly? Kind of like using the touch controller to grab the virtual gun in Robo Recall and shooting it.
@BamTechVids7 жыл бұрын
FlyInside lets you control the yoke in FSX. XP11 native VR demo;d this as well. personally i prefer to use a physical device to control the plane but to each his/her own.
@paristo7 жыл бұрын
Those things are different and not comparable. Let me extend that dream a little bit. First cars had a "joystick" as a steering wheel. A single axis pole up and it had a crank that you rotated around like a modern farming vehicles steering wheels or trucks has. It was difficult and inaccurate to use as in fast situations and in accurate movements you couldn't rotate the crank well enough. The steering wheel was a solution to fix most problems. And yet many thought that in future cars has a joystick like an aircrafts have. Only to fail in tests as a small short stick used for steering was way too inaccurate and "touchless". Too many accidents happened because stick was moved accidentally or let go of it or controls were too fast or too little. So back to steering wheel. And it is the best option as you can easily rest your hands when doing long drives, you can do accurate turns with it and it is super fast and strong one when required to do the quick and fast turns like in case of emergency and still maintain controllability. Why does a other aircrafts usually have a steering wheel kind controller than stick like the fighters has? Because it is just easier and simpler as the aircrafts don't really go do maneuvers like fighters do. Yet you have the both hands (time before FBW) to do mechanical motion by even both pilots. But with fighters you got the stick, like with helicopters you got the stick (cyclic). And those are set so that you can comfortable rest your whole arm without doing movements, in case of cyclic for helicopters as very tiny movement is big one and cyclic has a magnetic break for the trimmer so it will lock the cyclic to its new position when trimmed. With aircrafts the stick has a mechanical feeling to give the feedback and yet you need to use a trimmer a lot to keep the stick in center while trimming so that aircraft moves in linear direction. When a F-16 was designed, it was given a force sensing stick. It was hard mounted stick that didn't move at all and it was positioned to right side of body so it is easier to operate than stick in center. But every test pilot hated that thing. Why? Because they didn't have any physical feedback of the stick motion! So engineers modified the stick so it moved a little bit, about a 6-8mm to any direction while being stiff, but still moved. And it changed everything as pilots now could rest their hands and still get their own touch feedback of the force applied to it. There is a VR game called "VTOL VR" in steam. It does HOTAS and requires you to use the motion controllers to grab them and use them. And it is really a difficult to use as you don't have the physical feedback what you are doing and you find yourself overdoing controls or doing too little. Like you don't have a feedback that your stick is fully on left, but you feel you need to turn more an more but you can't as there is no feedback that you are already on limit and you only realise that by looking the virtual stick. Flying longer periods than a few minutes becomes stressing as you can't rest your hands. As you really need to position your hands to virtual ones and they ain't on your lap etc. The closest thing to realise this is to sit down and play a mental game that you are driving a car and hold your arms like you would have a steering wheel in your hands and you would be turning it around. You can't really do that well for many minutes with controllers in your hands as you get tired! But with actual wheel you can do that as you can gentle just grab it and control it without much effort, or you can just rest your hands on your lap and steer from bottom of the steering wheel. And that is something you can't do with motion controllers as you don't have physical object to hold on that requires some force to move the steering wheel. Every physical controller offers a physical resting place for hands and feets. If you would need to hold things up in a air without support, it becomes too tiring and inaccurate. You just need the feedback of the controls to be efficient.

Hi, I'm a pilot and want to get into VR but how do you do things such as turn knobs, flick switches, etc? I see it being done withe the hand held controls, but what about tuning a radio or GPS or jet FMS system? Can this easily be done in VR or more likey with goggles off and a secondary (or primary) monitor? Secondly, If I have a realistic throttle is there a way to realistically position it so that when you reach for the throttle in VR you grab the real one? (I assume this is by just trial and error).
@BamTechVids5 жыл бұрын
I use PlaneCommand for changing radios with voice recognition. The Oculus controllers make it easy to turn knobs and switches. You can prob position your real controls realistically, trial and error. Check out the VR Aviators Group on Facebook, may VR flyers there who can answer your questions.

You mention FPS of 90 for the VR experience to be an acceptable standard? Most simmers with even the highest end systems using add ons such as PMDG and ORBX etc etc would kill for 90 FPS. I have what would be considered ample VR system requirements however there's no way I would get 90 FPS with all my add ons. I regularly achieve between 35 to 60 FPS so 90 seems somewhat unachievable considering your system and mine are virtually the same specs? So I'm a little confused as I'm seriously considering entering the world of VR flying. Thanks for the video, very informative.
@BamTechVids6 жыл бұрын
I was referring to VR headset refresh rate being 90 FPS. You have to separate the flight sim app from the VR Headset I this discussion. Rift and Vive refresh rates are 90hz or 90 frames per second. The flight sim app as to be upscaled or reprojected to this refresh rate to produce an acceptable VR experience. That’s what software add ons like FlyInside do. So even though XPlane is running at 30FPS FlyInside reprojects that to 90. Xplane Native VR needs 45 FPS in the sim and then doubles that to 90 to provide a usable VR experience. Hope this explains it.

There is *absolutely* no need for an i7. An i5 is perfect. Games simply do not use all the extra cores you're paying so much money for if you buy an i7. A high clock speed per core is more important. Especially for, for example, DCS.

Hi mate, did some experimenting with both flyinside and the Oculas Debug tool,...it was a very long night...sigh!!. I ended up changing the supersampling to 1.5, changing the flyinside resolution to the second one from the maximum and have noticed improved ground texture resolution quality over previous which was pretty much unusable. These new settings do however stress the 980ti to 99% which is is ok but not good:) I know a guy who's selling a 1080 I think for 350.00 .uk pounds here. Do you think if I buy his 1080 I could set the supersampling up to 2. from 1.5? Also steady frames as my 980ti does drop down from 90 quite a bit.

I had Oculus Tool Pixel Per Display set to 2 for my GTX 1070 SC card with no problems. I have it set to that for my 1080 Ti. There is a HUD you can use in the new tool to help you get the best PPD setting. This video explains kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJbQoXVjZcaVoMU
@maydaygoingdown56027 жыл бұрын
BambinoGames Yeah unfortunately setting it to 2 kills my 980ti and frames:). Wondering wether the 1080 is a good option for 350.00 quid.

Running XP11/FlyInside at 2880 and Oculus Pixel at 2 with my EVGA GTX 1070SC, i7-6700 was fine for me. did have some slower frame rates with some 3rd party planes and some custom scenery areas. The more GPU power the better. Theres a lot of wasted GPU power with current XP11. When LR starts using Vulkan (2018 maybe) it should use GPU to the fullest. Unfortunately, this is not an exact science so results may vary.
@maydaygoingdown56027 жыл бұрын
BambinoGames I use a lot of ORTHO4XP scenery, and I mean a lot!!:) I tend tried the Jaredesign A330 did hit frames a little, then I tried the A320 and that was no loss of frames....haha I know, strange!!. Also found no hit using the FA 18 fighter too. Will be trying the 757 tonight too, I reckon it will be good for frames as somehow the 757 is absolutely great for frame rates.

What would your recommendation be today in mid 2019 , what has changed since 2017?
@BamTechVids5 жыл бұрын
i would still recommend X Plane 11 for VR flight. There now many more headset options to choose from now. I tend to like Oculus for their ease of use, installation, large software library. Im still using a Rift CV1 but considering the S.
@Blaze_19615 жыл бұрын
You didn't mention controllers (touch-yoke-joystick) and how they each work while using a headset.

this vid isn't specific to any one flight sim.
@Blaze_19615 жыл бұрын
@@BamTechVids yes I know that..You still didn't mention anything about controllers. Controllers are a huge part of VR headsets.

not sure why you've rated DCS down so much, I found it to be far better than flyinside with xp11.
@BamTechVids7 жыл бұрын
its not that i rated DCS down, I don't have enough experience with it in VR to give it a fair shake which I said in the video. thansk for watching.

I have a question.... I use FlyInside for both X Plane and P3D V3.4, in P3D the quality is acceptable and good enough compared to other VR games but in XP it's so bad no matter what resolution I set it to in FlyInside settings.... it's very blurry and impossible to read any switch or nearly all instruments in C172.... tried to google it still no use, I have Oculus with Oculus Touch and my PC specs: 4770K 4.4ghz 1070GTX SSD 16gb ram Windows 7 Monitor: Asus PG348Q running at 3440X1440 resolution Planning to upgrade more VR focused build like 7700K or Ryzen 1700 or even new 7820X with 1080Ti if that gonna help but I don't think PC hardware is issue
@BamTechVids7 жыл бұрын
TRX X have you tried posting on FI's forum for help? I doubt it's a hardware issue. When I used a 1070 I had no problem reading gauges.
@TRX25EX7 жыл бұрын
BambinoGames I didn't post yet cause it should be popular issue i thought but it might be in my side only, but first what is your FlyInside settings and X Plane settings? also do you use Oculus Tool if yes what is the setting for pixel density?
@BamTechVids7 жыл бұрын
I have Oculus CV1 Pixel Per Display set to 200% for my 1080Ti (this is GPU dependent so use caution before increasing). Will be posting a video with my current settings shortly.

Just a quick reply from some1 who has used P3D V4 native VR it is god awful right now just hoping and praying Flyinside get around to a V4 app soon otherwise VR is in the hands of LM and we all know how much they care lol

no worries Bambino just picked up xplane11 on the steam sale only 25% off full retail but still a saving hope they don't screw us over with updates like DCS did
@BamTechVids7 жыл бұрын
Thats a good buy. I think LR is committed to XP continuous improvement. Judging from their FSC presentations they have a solid grasp on what users want. Just a matter of time and effort to deliver. Software is hard, especially flight sim software.
@keithhynan3937 жыл бұрын
I do not question their desire to make XP great its just hope they fully support their steam users as I say something Eagle dynamics seemed to shy away from all their new stuff yes still in Beta but u cannot get any of it for their steam version which is a shame as u said in this video they prob have the best native VR sim right now without apps I mean just the sim its very good for VR use.

Simple cables on Rift? Interesting as you'll need a minimum of 3 USB ports simply for the basic setup of 2 sensors. Any more sensors and you're looking at between 4-5 usb ports and cables all over the place...Not to mention they're very short so you'll need to get extensions for any back sensors.
@BamTechVids6 жыл бұрын
what i meant was 1 cable going to the headset

I'm really disappointed that FS 2020 won't have VR. Does this mean MS is headed toward a proprietary VR system? I know that Bill Gates is running short of money.

jacob. Laminar Research has said the 1070 is the sweetspot GPU for X Plane 11. If you're planning on flying X Plane 11 in VR I think a 1070 is the starting point. You can download versions of X Plane 11 and FlyInside to try it out with your current config.

Unusable, don't even know why they make it available. You have to use flyinside for P3D. That's the sim I use, and it's AMAZING. Can't go back to 2D flying.

the problem with areofly is greed. you have to buy every state. for high price dls addons. then you have no traffic no control tower not everything on the map is there. houses cars. nothing but just land trees and some city buildings that do nothing. other then that areofly control is nice. but that is about it. i stopped p[laying areofly after i got 3 states then they came out with more dlc to buy more and more. i sticking with xplane 11 dcs and i not tryed lL2 yet that is next on my list
