Some other very important things for ILS Know the 3:1 rule for a three degree slope. Every three miles is 1000 feet. If they are having you joining 6 mile final but keeping you at 3000 feet AAE... (which they might do if there’s traffic crossing underneath at 2000 feet for the parallel runway and a jet on a 15 mile final) you’re going to have to dive onto the slope. Every ILS has a glide path check at the FAF or middle marker. This is to ensure glide path accuracy. Know the required decent rate. It’s 1/2 your ground speed *10. If you’re grounding 90 knots, you have to go down at 450 fpm to stay on slope. Don’t chase the needles once you’re on short final. Hold your heading and required vertical speed no matter what the needles do. You’ll probably get visual reference and be able to adjust rather than destabilizing your approach at the last second. One final bit of advice more applicable to real ILS flying is to not be afraid of the ground. Most pilots get unnerved when they see terrain rushing up in their periphery at a 200’ DH. Fly that slope to 20 feet above the ground.
@HoustonGamerTVHGTV2 жыл бұрын
As an instrument rated pilot I confirm this is correct. Especially that 90 knot ground is for a category A aircraft. And he should lose 675 feet per nautical mile using the formula of ground speed ➗ 60 ✖ fpm.

Did they try these training missions before publishing?
@chrisl6546 Жыл бұрын
Wow - that was a huge help (along with the previous one on following a VOR)! The instructions don't explain what's going on geometrically so it's hard to sort out what's going on if you miss and don't have any instrument flying training/background/anything. X-plane 12 also has an annoying feature that right as you're making the critical turn to get established, they give you a message and then it resets the view when you dismiss it. On my setup it resets to showing bright daylight with the instruments in shadow, and zoomed out, so you have to take your hands off the stick to adjust the view to be able to see the instruments at all again. I agree they're trying to kill you. First it starts out way out of trim so it's fighting you to get to 5000' and just wants to keep climbing (I've even gotten the stall warning at the start). Then to get to the 3000 feet you almost have to get the airspeed into the red unless you pull the throttle all the way back and then restore it as you get close and level out.
@randomanon70405 ай бұрын
8:43 Yes, that could be worded much better. You're explanation is great. I had no idea what these guys were talking about until I watched this video. And the fact that you had all the same complaints about starting altitude, I did gave me a warm fuzzy.

Hello Jeff! Is there a way to turn off the glass reflections on the instruments on the flight deck in XP11? Have you noticed that the flight deck is either too bright or too dark?Very harsh lighting! Even the icons in the upper right of the menu area are hard to see. I guess they are trying to ruin everyone's eyes.Honestly, the flashing reflections suck and are very distracting. I am about to go into my flight training but I have been in aircraft since 3 so I dont know how I will feel.
@jamesoren72387 жыл бұрын
+1 I did a few expo hours in school 20 years ago, but only recently (2 yrs ago) decided to get my PPL. I bought a TIF (trial day) and wasn't nervous at all - we did some basic aerobatics and had a lot of fun, so I got my log book and signed straight up for lessons. That first lesson, I really did feel nervous! It isn't just the flying - I don't think I ever actually thought my instructor would let me crash it, my brain just started adding in all this external stuff - like how much money I was spending and would the instructor turn around and say "You'll never be a pilot". I think really I was most worried that now I was trying my dream I might fail it. Like I said, the fear (that was very present) wasn't actually about being high up or crashing or the slightly claustrophobic feeling you might get at first. It also came back several times during my training. Maybe after I had a bad lesson, or made a mistake I thought I'd worked my way through, next week I'd be strapping in with butterflies in my gut. Honestly though, when I got nervous, it was always from the moment we left the classroom , constantly building until I was on the runway... then somehow, as we'd take off, it's like the fear just kept going along the ground. In the air it was more... getting frustrated when I made a mistake, or trying not to forget something. Honestly sometimes I'd be concentrating so hard, it'd feel like we'd barely been up 5 minutes when it was time to come back lol. The fear of landing wasn't really there for me once I was actually in the plane. I think the first lesson I had a breif "Oh shit, we gotta land now" moment, but the instructor did it of course, and even once I took over approaches and landings in my lessons, I always knew the guy sitting next to me also didn't want to become human jam. When I'd make a mistake, he'd always catch it, so it felt quite safe really. And really as you can kind of see in this video, landing isn't something you "wing" - it's a long check list of baby steps... so I don't think it's too nerve racking. Just follow the instructor's guidance, focus on each step and check it off, and before you know it, the tarmac's underneath you. When it came to my first solo, that's very scary. But again, it's scary BEFORE take off. In the class room going over everything with the instructor over and over I honestly couldn't believe they were about to let me take their plane up without supervision. When my instructor said good luck and shut the door, I had a sinking moment of thinking it was like closing the door on a submarine, and had a nervous laugh to myself. That taxi was probably the most nervous I've ever been in my limited flying career lol, but as always, once I got the go, all the training kicked in, and I don't really remember being too nervous, just very robotic that first flight, constantly ticking my plan off step by step in my head. I wasn't too nervous when I was up there, but I also wasn't really emotional at all until I got out the plane! Sorry for the long answer, I guess in reality, everyone is different, and we'll all be nervous, and we'll all be nervous about different things. What's important to remember is the instructors are fantastic and they're never going to ask you to do something they don't think you're ready for. And there's a thousand flight instructors around - there's usually 3 of 4 schools at the same airport - if you're not comfortable at all with your instructor, like learning to drive a car, just switch :)

@cowsgohuh73288 жыл бұрын
Question. For an airport such as KSEA with multiple runways, how is it (the instrument) determines what runway they (air traffic control) want you to go to?
@jfavignano8 жыл бұрын
The runway selected is determined by the winds. You ALWAYS take off and land into the wind. You can look up METARS (which we will go over in a future lesson) to have a good idea of what to expect when you arrive at the airport. Landing with a tailwind is downright dangerous. You would rather have a cross wind than a tail wind.

Hi Jeff.. Really sorry but I started laughing when it failed you due to your aircraft altitude.. I found your videos when I was needing help with VOR on X Plane (mobile) a couple of days ago while practicing on my tablet .. So when I messed up on the final turn towards the runway when training for the ILS I came looking for your channel again.. Again sorry for laughing but it didn't fail me due to doing a bomb dive when I realized how high the plane was when it gave me control.. Anyway just want to thank you for your very informative vids.. if I wasn't nearly 60 and my physical abilities were ok oh yeah and money wasn't a issue I would definitely be going for my PPL. but I have decided to go for just a few lessons just to experience flying.. Just before then I will be buying a new gaming PC, some flight controls and maybe the Microsoft flight 2020 (If out) So I can get a little instrument practice before going up... and after I will be able to sit in the safety of my home and fly around the world.. I haven't been on a flight sim for at least 12 years last one being Microsoft flight 2004.. Thanks again buddy.. and I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching many more of your videos..

What happened to training people how to use the APR button on the AP so you can do a real ILS landing? The proper way to do this ILS is to use the GPS 1000 and arm your approach a good 10-15 miles off as you come in on FAF, so you don't have to chase anything, it's dangerous to do so in real life, you want the GPS and AP to capture GS and LOC and let it bring you in. All you have to do then is manage your throttle and flaps. If you couldn't see down to 300-200 ft. mins. chasing that GS needle could get you killed. I don't get XPlane11 sometimes. I finally managed 3 ILS landings in a row practicing 10 mile finals last night, at two different airports, then I tried a full flight from Phoenix AZ to KTEX Telluride tonight, GPS all the way to 40 miles out, then I armed my approach ILS in from the FAF, and it didn't work. I was pretty pissed off. This was in the Cirrus Vision jet. I practiced all three ILS last night in the Cessna 172, and they all worked fine. This was using the GPS entirely the whole time. I"m getting fed up with the erratic nature of XPlane11, sometimes it works, sometimes not. I had everything set up: nav radio set, heading set a long time before approach, my approach loaded in the GPS 1000, everything. Intercepting at or under GS alt., and it still didn't work or capture LOC or GS. I"m about ready to chuck it. I can do a VFR flight great, no matter where, and do a great manual landing every time. I suspect it's XPlane being cruddy, is what it is. It's buggy.
