Try puting a heavier spring in, it seems counter intuitive, but it makes it much easier when you tend to over-control.

Nice flight! Try resting your underarm on your leg and grab the stick between thumb and finger(s). Use the muscles in thumb and finger for small increments while your in a hover. Happy hopping!

Great stuff! I've just got my dad on X Plane 11. He used to fly an R22 irl. How can I get him one on X Plane? I've looked through the DLC on Steam and couldn't see one.

How is your stick so smooth? I plan on getting this Warthog stick in a week so thats nice! But how did you get it like if there is no spring? How did you make the longer stick like that?

How did you get this aircraft to work with XP11 ? It's only supposed to be supported in XP10... I did try it with XP11 and it has RPM issues, shadow issues, gauge issues, and flight dynamics are weird... But in XP10 it works perfectly. I would really like to completely delete XP10, but this aircraft is my favorite by far.. thank you. @buckysim

Is there a way to fly this with just a joystick and using a keyboard as a rudder?
@discodave19764 жыл бұрын
No. The world of helos really takes the proper equipment and skill and practice. To me, this is what makes it enjoyable and rewarding. Even in X-Plane. Even the joysticks with twist axis for rudder are a poor choice. 100% guarantee you will love Helos in flight sims. I am IGI and real world pilot basically fixed wing. I didn't start enjoying sims until I started flying helos and their "missions" style. I purchased the Warthog as in video. It has very high res but is basically a "brick". It unnecessarily, weighs a ton. The spring is probably stronger than the coil spring on my 65 corvair LOL. I returned it. Even the spring mods and extension do not remove the "centering bump feel" while hovering with the hog. If you do the above mod the joy is pretty smooth in hover but just flops over, very accurate hover but a nuisance. The Thrustmaster T 1600 HOTAS kit with rudders and throttle as collective is probably a good place to start. Just mod the spring in the joy. The DF Bell 407 in XP has a Force Trim that works OK with spring loaded joysticks. Spring loaded controls and Helos are not a great combo, but they work, average. The PFT PUMA $1350 is what I use. Expensive, but note, this is an addiction! Divorce your wife if necessary! or tell her it is for the kids LOL. The PFT FOX is $600. Probably a better choice than T1600 kit at $250. The VKB Gladiator joy $99 and rudder $200 is another choice. Hi-res, new centering mechanisms in the works, Getting decent reviews for helos. I am setting up an SimHelo addiction hotline on my website at aviationknowledge.org. Good Luck

what do you use for headtracking? I have a lot of trouble flying this R22. when picking up, I seem to catch a skid and rollover a lot.
@buckysim1817 жыл бұрын
I use the track-ir 5 for headtracking. Yes the R22 is very tricky to fly. I recon the spingless joystick mod is necessary to be able to hover this heli with any precision. Also to have an extended joystick, to more closely resemble the throw you have on a real cyclic, I think makes it a lot more easy to control an aircraft like this. If you don't have the possibility to do this, I think enabling some of the aircraft stabilization to counter the handicap of having an inferior cyclic, is warranted to get closer to the real behavior of the aircraft.

Thanks a lot. I've made a lot of progress since my first question. Getting the CG and weight correct were critical. I'm now able to pickup and hover pretty well. I _do have full scale controls. One thing that still is off - the MAP. Even with a gross weight of 1250 lbs, I pickup at around 15" of manifold. WHy is this off by so much. Is there any way to fix this easily?
@discodave19764 жыл бұрын
Head tracking and VR seem to complicate issues. How do you write down an IFR clearance in VR? I use DF BEll 407 with XP quick views and FOV at 100% with glass doors. Works fine. "Picking up" to hover takes proper sensitivity/augmentation settings and quality helo equipment. Set your XP Stabilty Augmentation to 50% or greater until you get the hang of it, gradually moving it down to less than 10% as a goal. Helos are a hoot but are a challenge. Fixed wing simmers are in for a surprise. They will actually have to use their feet for something other than taxiing and their left hand for something other than picking their nose.. LOL

is this the hardest helicopter to fly in xplane? im very well trained with helicopters - fast approaches to small platforms with precision is no problem so i'm looking for a new challenge. thanks in advance for letting me know
@buckysim1816 жыл бұрын
I've only tried this and the as350 and this is a bigger challenge to cobtrol, mainly because the tail rudder is far more sensitive. The as350 however got more technical features, like GPS and force trim, which are fun to explore. I would recommend the Robinson for practicing flight maneuvers and the as350 if you like to do flight Sim economy flights

This R22 might not be optimized for XP 11. I think you will be very happy with XP 11 optimized $35 DF Bell 407 and how it handles with proper controls (I use PUMA)

Karl Jordan I'd try less throttle. It's not a "rudder" it's "torque" - a phenomenon of using the motor. Just a guess

I am not sure that DF R22 has been optimized for XP 11.4+. I use DF Bell 407 and it handles beautifully in xp 11.4 because it has been optimized to the new flight model.

Judging by the movement of R22, I believe your inputs are too much. It would be nice to see both the R22 cyclic and the Warthog in same view to judge latency and movement. Could be due to extension on warthog cyclic. Should be able to adjust profile in XP. I use DF Bell 407 in X-Plane 11.4. Super nice handling and performance, Has HeliSas and GNS 430 as well as analog instruments. Hovering should take very little control input on cyclic. It seems like yours was too much. There is a guy on net that sells extensions as well as soft springs for warthog that still allow centering but not much pull back. Thanks for videos.
@discodave19764 жыл бұрын
Yes... I replied to my own comment. I returned the Warthog "Brick" and have yet to return the $100 spring and extensions mod that did not work well (still had centering "Bump" while hovering). I purchased the PFT PUMA helo controls and am very happy. The Warthog kit is basically a $500 kit that is designed for fixed wing with beefy springs. Trying to Mod it for helos is an exercise in frustration.
