Except the similar ground textures and autogen it has been a huge step forward compared to XP11, although it does still struggle a bit with some aspects. But in a few months it will be fantastic.

There's something about 31:37 X-Plane's dawn and dusk lighting that particularly on the ground looks amazingly realistic, far more so than MSFS.

@@saminaneen x-plane scenery is a lot better than FSX, you’re over exaggerating. Secondly, Austin Meyer has acknowledged the limitations of x-plane scenery and has promised to update the scenery after everything else is finished. And lastly, there’s no point in having good scenery if you have horrible realism, like in the case of MSFS. Please stop trying to comment on every x-plane post saying that MSFS is better, if we thought MSFS is better, we would’ve started using it as our primary flight sim. I’m not going to call a flight sim like MSFS “realistic” when you don’t have basic features like weather radar, and inconsistent glide slopes. Not to mention the buildings looking like melted candles because of photogrammetry.

Stay with what u like and don't come around the streams and posts ratting bad vibes about this sim. I have all 3 sims , been simming since the 90s and I prefer xplane mostly. Msfs I use for entertainment only. Xplane for serious hard-core pilot training . My opinion. Take it or leave it. NUFF SAID 😊

Excellent video Micah, one of the best side by side comparisons videos I've seen. The music you selected was perfect for this. It did not distract at all from the video and during the quieter portions, it was a wonderful accompaniment to what was shown on the screen. No question that XP 12 looks better scenery wise, but if you look closely, the graphics and fonts on the aircraft were cleaner and crisper in XP 11. Honestly, even though MSFS 2020 graphics are far superior then either XP versions, I still hold to the POV that X Plane flight dynamics are more in line with the real world and that it takes more skill to fly PROPERLY then with the MSFS counterpart. To take it one step further, I think XP 11 flight modelling is better then in XP 12 and I've read allot of folks say that they went back to XP 11 because they felt the same way I do. I still will be building a PC for MSFS, which I was about to start when the news dropped about MSFS 2024, after the specs and other info for it are revealed in the coming months. My X Plane is installed on my Mac Studio and it runs around 40-50 FPS with most of the settings at maximum! I did try the demo version of XP 12 and it ran very well on my system too. One last and crucial point for me is that although the Zibo has been upgraded for XP 12, there is a freeware MAX 8 version based on the Zibo that I fly and I absolutely love it, however there has not been an update for it to work on XP 12. So with all that said, I will be sticking with 11 for now as I await the news for MSFS 2024 to drop. I will always fly both MSFS & X Plane. Each has their strengths and areas that are better then the other. We are all blessed to have these two companies, along with Lockheed's P3D sims available to us. Competition is a wonderful thing that drives the desire of these companies to get better all the time and we all benefit from that! Great video. I was only an MSFS user until I tried the XP 12 demo and fell in love with the flight and ground physics. I bought XP12 and with the Hot Start CL650 and auto-ortho I haven't played MSFS since... 😬

Old video by now - THANKS for really nice side-by-side comparison. I'm sure to be an exception, but for me, excellence of flight dynamics and cockpit accuracy/usability are very much my highest priority. So long as scenery is at least a rough facsimile, I'm happy. Better than that - as in XP12 & MSFS (rather poor flight dynamics IMHO) and I say, "very nice to have- makes me smile".

I use both and having a huge bunch of scenarios and libraries in XP11 folder I link them to XP12 (and 99,9% of them work well in 12). But I must admit that with some addons like Simheaven, shader plugins, XVision or xEnviro, XP11 is coming closer to XP12. And I still reckon the night lighting in XP11 is much much better. Also one should consider that some planes still stay XP11 only, like Twin Otter or many others.

Thank You for your work and video! I am still in the process of migrating my home cockpit from 11 to 12. First thing I noticed was heavy building and forest flicker, ie , terminal buildings at Nice / LFMN. Despite Aliasing at max. Did you notice sth like this yourself? RTX3080 / 3 1920 projector set up. The difference in the stall behaviour would be aircraft dependant. For the Cessna's some of them would "mush" with the power off stall, in other words you will sit with the yoke in your belly and the aircraft would just descend at a high rate with the wings stalled. To spin them, you have to kick the rudder. Others would enter the stall and then "drop" a wing, like you demonstrated in 12. You can then immediately recover, pitch the nose down to un-stall the wings and at the same time apply full opposite rudder. This is called a recovery from a incipient spin. Otherwise, if you do nothing, a spin would develop. Good video, thank you

I see there is a bigger visual update, yes... but the perfomance is not good at all for XP12 (FPS and stoittering drops). XP12 is great no question, but the CPU usage is still utilising at 1 (!!) core only in 2023. RTX 3080 at the limit...next gen looks different to me. They have a lot of work ahead. I will stay with XP11 until now and I have RTX 4080 with i7 Intel... MS2020 is best at visuals, XP11 is best in simulating.

I have to admit, X-Plane 12 is much better looking than I thought, now I've seen the side by side comparisons. Hats off to Laminar Research, a good job. My only criteque would be the plausible world, if they can somehow make is look a bit more organic, it just looks well like a computer game in a 1980 sense. I'm sure procedural tech and AI can solve this and they can maintain the way they render the world and make it looks amazingly good but I think that would move it to the next level.

I just bought new virpil hotas and pedals and as i feared they do not work on my favorite sim MSFS 2004. (FS9). Now i have to find a new sim and as you see i will stay with that sim for a long time. naturally MSFS was my 1st choice but i could not find a single SAAB 340 for MSFS. I saw great reviews for the LES Saab340 for X-Plane. LES says they do not support x-plane 12 but no one seems to have issues with the saab on 12. So that did not help me none at all in deciding. That is what makes this video so awesome. It helped me make my decision. Side by side comparison of both. I agree 12 does look better but it does not look anywhere near $50 better. so x-plane 11 is what i will be choosing. If it was $10 more i would take 12 hands down but not for $50 more. Thank you again for a great 5* side by side video that really helps people decide how to spend their hard earned money.

@@MicahMesser i do not think that many updates have happened in the 8 months since you did this video. x-plane 12 still is not $50 better than 11. again i am not knocking 12, other than adding some payware aircraft i do not think there is really anything they could add or update to justify $50 more money over 11. 11 looks that good i assume it looks even better with the mods. I wil take that extra 50 and buy add on aircraft. i know i am in the minority on that thinking but i need to justify every penny i spend and make sure i am getting a good value. So take my opinion it with a grain of salt because i would still be playing FS9 if these Virpil Controls would work on it. LOL

XP11 user, not sure my 2017 I7 iMac 32GB iMac could handle XP12, so staying with XP11, plus would need new storage options. I have ORBX WA, OR, N.Cal, S.Cal & FL, mostly fly west coast, the difference over stock scenery in SEA area is massive and worth the investment.

I'm planning to upgrade my PC so your Intel vs AMD info (core utilization) was very helpful. X-Plane 12 is definitely more demanding on both GPU and CPU than X-Plane 11, such that my present system can't run it well. I agree MSFS is great eye candy but for a number of technical reasons X-Plane suits me better.

I would go with AMD now actually. The 3D CPUs are going to help a ton with their large cache. Look at the 7800x3D or even the 7900x3D if you have the extra cash.

A great comparison of the two XP versions here. My demo version of XP12 runs a little faster than yours and so does not have the framerate stutter so obvious here. I was blown away by the water reflections, especially on the runways with 12 but some of its lighting although on the whole looking wonderful, had an un-realistic look to it compared with 11, ie the sunsets looked to be taken on a camera sunset mode, ie exaggerating saturation and contrast. I did wonder if the general default scenery and urban views would be improved and your video proves that this is the case. Is it worth upgrading? Your video does make it look more appealing as long as all my XP11 add-ons would work and it did not freeze as it did on yours. In the meantime, I do most of my flying now on MSFS 2020 for the extensive more realistic scenery but somehow I still long for X-Planes technically better aircraft. ..Cheers and thanks for your monumental effort to bringing us this.

I notice that since X-plane 12 came out, on X-plane 11, my Corenado King Air 200 no longer has a heading bug or OBS, however it remains on the Corenado PA31. So far, I'm not seeing any significant improvement to X-plane 12 so am remaining with X-plane 11 till I upgrade my computer which presently meets the minimum standards today but Xplane say Xplane 12 requires a more power. Now "Rendering", X-Plane 12 has more of it, you don't get anything for free, if you want frame rate you don't want every ground detail, what you want is a good set of instruments without having to go aftermarket all the time and having to deal with bugging Coranado why the King Air does not function on its basic heading bug.

12 is more contrasty. That might can be changed in the config file. I have both but for me all planes fly super smooth in 11 but 12 turns into a slide show near a major airport even with everything at minimum.

nice comparsion. How they can say xplane is the worlds most realistic simulator is beyond me. They've been saying that since X-Plane 9 at least. So for me it's MSFS for the win. However, MSFS and Xplane both have charm in different ways so maybe just get both?

I have both X-Plane and MSFS. I generally fly in MSFS because I love the looks, hard to beat that. But, I will say this, X-Plane feels more realistic for GA. It has been very frustrating recently recording General Aviation in MSFS because the weather is just so inaccurate in the way it interacts with the aircraft.

Yes, replay is having issues. According to another commentor, avoid changing weather and time. Also, my personal experience, only click somewhere on the replay timeline.

nice comparison.. i dunno tho.. still looks like fsx on an old box.. but i still think fsx looked better especially with addons.. the polished spinner in the 172 looked pretty good tho.. i'm getting back into simming after a few years.. i've always flown full scale.. but havent had time for simming lately.. going to build a nice elaborate sim.. i have several high end computers to use.. all the big 4k screens and tons of small ones for glass.. tons of arduinos and and printer... the skill, tools, time, to build.. finally.. i even have a old fuselage if i really wanted to cut it up and use for a sim.. but i think i can build a more versatile/modular sim so i can swap between aircraft easier.. maybe build a 182.. with a 6 pack... a mooney or bonanza on g1000.. pc-12 (what i fly currently), king air or tbm .. maybe a citation/premiere 1A/gulfstream.. never really saw any really decent light jets in the sim.. then a twin airliner.. 737 or 777.. maybe 787.. depends on who has the most realistic addons when i get to those builds.. back when i was simming before on p3d/fsx.. PMDG was the best 737... accufeel a2a sim carenado had decent GA.. it's been so long.. i'm just starting to research what's out now.. i have owned many different GA aircraft.. currently I have a PC-12.. recently upgraded from a older king air 90.. hence why i was looking to see what XP12 was looking like..

I have to admit that despite the detail improvements I still kind of like X-Plane 11's overall visual better, despite the crappy clouds. 12's water effects are bad...the mirroring effect on the water makes it look unnatural and still. Like something a model train hobbyist would create on their layout.

I do believe the 7800x3d's are performing better than the 13900k's right now in xplane due to the increased cache. Obviously, this could change as simulators become more multithreaded

X-Plane 12 looks amazing! I really wanna try MSFS2020 but I'm concerned about offline play. My internet is slow so I think X-plane may be the better option? It sounds like MSFS data streaming and big updates would make it unplayable for me

Is it just me or did the frame rate seem really jerky and stuttering on XP12? Yea, the definition in the graphics are better but it comes at a cost to your CPU and GPU. I will stick with 11 for now as I can't really afford the upgrade right now. Thanks for a great video production and comparison.

The problem is the CPU, 100%. XP 11 will run better than XP 12 though. But that CPU is bottlenecking everything else.

All flight simulator video games are great none of them are bad it's just that people prefer graphics over everything else in flight simulators I don't care about graphics I'll even play flight simulator 3.0 I have X-plane 11 and I'm sticking with that 12 is just a graphical update I'm going to wait until 13 comes out to get the next X-plane because 13 Is going to be the real game changer because it's two numbers I had not one number ahead and that's when they're going to take the best of 11 the best of 12 and just make it leaps and bounds better than both but like I said before all flight simulators are great Play all of them own all of them whether it's a combat flight simulator or a civilian flight simulator every single one of them ever made since the '70s is great

I'm from Seattle. X-Plane 11 has more muted colors and less contrast along with softer clouds which deliver more realism. X-Plane 12 appears far too rich and post card like.

Hey, Micah, I believe x-plane 12 will always crash in replay mode if you change any weather settings. At least that’s been my experience so far. I’ve sent it in as a bug report. Thanks for your video. Really looking forward to x-plane 12’s new clouds. The clouds in the beta version are looking really pretty good - mostly good, certainly a huge step up from what they are now. I'm in the process of switching back to XP11 from MSFS. I tried the XP12 demo but he performance was a no go. I was hanging with MSFS for a while and getting more than decent performance. But as my PC has aged, so has the types of programs I can run. It seems like MSFS is running worse and worse for me. It's to the point where it's become a bit of a blurry mess for the same performance. Meanwhile other programs have seen improvements. XP12 just refused to cooperate at all. It seemed like altering the settings did absolutely nothing either way. The framerate was decent around 35-40 but it was stuttery and choppy and almost nauseating. XP11 ran like a dream on my old, crappy system, and while XP12 and MSFS are both absolutely stunning, I have plenty of addons already for XP11 and it runs so damn smooth. Slap a reshade on there to deal with that washed out pallet and boom. Not the prettiest sim out there but it runs well, and flies well. Maybe if I ever actually manage to get an income again in the near future I'll upgrade it all and make the switch to MSFS permanent. But for now, XP11 is still the go to for me, and I suspect that similar stories would explain the player counts being so much higher for XP11 than XP12, along with addon compatibility, at this point so long after XP12's release.

This goes back to FS-X. AMD and Radeon were poor performers compared to Intel and Nvidia, probably due to optimization.

My X-11 doesn't look anything like that. The whole world except for a few cities is almost completely flat and barren... Bought X-12 hoping for stuff in the world, and better VR performance than MSFS 2020... I have 3080 and 11700f.

@@MicahMesser No autoortho is easy on space since it will stream the scenery. You just need to install the base mesh (around 15 GB for Europe for ex.)

Google AMD 7900X3D vs i9-13900K in X-Plane 12 AMD works better. And you don't need 7900X3D, 7800X3D with one CCD will be even better. And cheaper.

I have noticed in XPlane 12 vs 11 the bridges, streets, and neighborhoods are more accurate to real life. I can find my little neighborhood quite easily on 12 but in 11 the freeways, buildings, and streets don't match up. I bought 11 last night for 10 bucks on the Steam sale to keep me busy when I don't want to get into DCS :)

You are asleep. The AMD X3D are the best CPUs for xplane, msfs, dcs world. My 5800X3D obliterated my 10700k desoite having a lower clockspeed.

That is like comparing apples to oranges. I sad comparable CPUs. The 10700K is older than the 5800K (which is what I have) and has twice the size transistors. Of course a 7NM is gonna beat a 14NM chip. You compare it to the 12th or 13th generation intel and they blow the 5800 out of the water. There is also a lot more than just the particulars, the protocols and engines utilized by AMD vs Intel and how developers utilize those protocols and engines matter.

Not sure of your viewing resolution however, at 1440 and 1080 there is a stark contrast between the transition from the clouds to "on top", sky color, and clouds in the distance presented at your time stamp.

But I think you missed the whole point. Since this shot is from the cockpit, I implicitly was trying to point out any difference of lighting in the cockpit between the 2 versions. The point is, remove the XP captions, you would not be able to tell which one is XP11 and which is XP12. Actually, XP 11 looks better on that shot to me from the outside perspective.

@@cliffd682 Not sure what to tell you ... The Cockpit shot is close to identical. A better comparison would be between MSFS shot and Xplane shot, you clearly can see the differences. This is not matter of opinion if the lighting renderer (for the cockpit) features-wise +textures are pretty much the same from XP11. Again, look at a cockpits rendered in MSFS as an example.

They pretty much copied all aircraft over what a shame. I never played X-Plane 11. I got into MSFS 2020 and enjoyed it I thought X-Plane 12 was going to be good and made a joke out of myself. I only Fly 4 aircraft out of the whole sim in X-Plane 12.

There are distinct differences between the versions, as they are presented, in their default states. XP11 (of any decimal variant) requires add-ons, and thus additional performance losses, to attain what XP12 is presenting by default; as the video has clearly shown.

@@cliffd682 Xp12 requires add-on same as XP 11 but with XP11 even with all the add-ons I get 80FPs, XP12 with no add-ons I get 28FPS. Clearly XP 11 is the winner here.

​@@activex7327Neither XP version requires add-ons, however to get XP11 to match what XP12 offers by default would require addons (as I stated in my original reply). I never disputed the performance differences in either version and with or without add-ons as the video and Micah have clearly shown XP11 is less performance heavy. So on that we can agree. I do distinctly remember the XP11 growing pains though and wouldn't be surprised to see XP12 improve in this regard.
