In this flight, we take the IXEG 737 on a short hop from London's Gatwick airport (EGKK) up to Edinburgh (EGPH), using a fully-modded X-Plane 12.
We'll depart out of Gatwick, runway 26L. Head out over the city of London, cruising at FL340 and then shoot the ILS approach onto runway 24 at Edinburgh. As always, we'll aim to try and keep the flight as realistic as possible, using real world, checklists, procedures, charts etc.
Installed Addons:
- Orbx True Earth Great Britain
- VisualXP Basic Edition
- ShadeX
- IXEG 737 Classic Plus
- Better Pushback
- X-Camera
- SimCoders HeadShake

Thanks very much Dave, I’m really glad you enjoyed it! Haha well, I come from a pretty similar background; the vast majority of my simming has been with Microsoft sims / P3D. I’ve tried my best to get into X-Plane over the years and always had hit and miss experiences with the platform. I can’t see XP12 taking me away from MSFS but, I really enjoyed the flight, X-Plane is still a little bit better when it comes to flying the heavy jets and I’m sure I’ll continue to dip into the sim from time to time : ) Happy flying and all the best!

Indeed, John; MSFS is undoubtedly prettier and tends to look better than X-Plane more often than not but, when X-Plane is at its best, I actually think the sim looks more photorealistic than the competition. Either way, the video wasn’t intended to poke a hornets nest, rather just to demonstrate what X-Plane 12 can be capable of (with enough work) haha. Cheers! : )

Hi Geonauto, I think the flight modelling in MSFS has improved significantly since the sim released and some 3rd party aircraft now fly quite nicely but, certainly, when I feel like doing some “realistic” simming with the heavies, X-Plane is still my go-to (so, I’m basically in the same camp as Philipp haha). Thanks very much UKAL, my pleasure on the video! Haha, I suppose in a way, a modern airliner is an ultimate gadget, yes. Although, I think a lot of people would be surprised how “dumb” an airliner can actually be; I think the public perception, is that a modern jet is one step away from being sentient when, in actuality, it’s basically just a big pocket calculator haha (ironically, many modern GA aircraft have more sophisticated avionics, than a typical commercial jet). Obviously, I’m biased but, there is certainly still a lot to think about as a pilot and we’re a long way from “planes just flying themselves”, as I often hear from Joe Bloggs on the street. As someone who, being Mac based, is X-Plane only I can't really comment on MSFS, but I find XP12 to be perfectly adequate, but with add ons like OrbX scenery, it's quite superb, and gets better with every update - and there are plenty of updates in the pipeline too, so the best is definitely yet to come! At this point I am merely playing with the demo to see how it works. Flying with a track ball sucks... Haven't tried to see if my CH yokes work. I like the M3 Studio idea. Read in the forum where someone thinks an M2 Max Studio 12cpu, 38-core GPU, 16-core Neural, 32 gm RAM and I tb SSD would be just fine. Cheap at $2,200, too. But what monitor? If I built a PC it would be solely for XP and MS2020. Worth the time and hassle? I dunno. I would rather minimize the computer fiddling time and maximize the flying.@@Erny_Module

@@thardyryllI have an iMac Pro and always struggled with the frame rate although it is a beast for other applications. Then I realized it has a 5K screen so I tried setting x-plane to 4K instead of native monitor setting. What a world of difference. It gave an increase of 15 fps. I was able to increase most of the settings to max which I couldn’t at first. Still a crisp picture at 4K but better frame rates. Hopefully this helps.

I spent many hours with XP 9 and 10 before becoming frustrated with appalling frame rates from my upgraded first gen Mac Pro. I even bought XP 11 but abandoned the sim altogether after getting a defective disk - the last one in the long loading process. This looks terrific but, as others note, what a shame it is that so much time and effort must be spent to improve the sim. As it is, the learning curve for flying, especially the heavy jets, takes many hours. Add to that the hardware matters, especially if one builds a PC, and then the modding and tuning, and the commitment to high-quality simming is enormous. Props, so to speak, to those who accomplish this. (Autocorrect tried to say “high-quality sinning.” Now there’s a thought.)

Sorry to hear that you had a bit of a torrid time with it all, Thardyryll. PC simming, can indeed be quite a time-consuming and expensive hobby and nothing has really changed in that regard, when it comes to X-Plane 12. MSFS on the other hand, is largely “ready to go” straight out of the box - one of the many reasons why I think the sim has been so successful. As with a lot of hobbyists, I think a lot of flight simmers enjoy the “tweaking”, almost as much as the “flying” haha (historically, you sort of had to). Cheers for your thoughts. All the best! : )

Hi Trent, As I mentioned during the video, I do think that X-Plane can look pretty great at times however, I find that the sim’s visuals are not without issues (particularly when it comes to lighting - scenes can often be way too dark in XP). Personally, I think the graphical fidelity is much improved after a bit of tweaking but, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and all that. . . Cheers, all the best! : )

Really interesting to see as I'm toying with getting XP12. I know I can trust your content to be impartial on this (never understood all the beef between FS and XP fans!) I've spent hours tweaking MSFS to get the graphics how I want them - looks like the same deal with XP12. Part of the joy of modern simming I guess. I think MSFS still looks prettier, but XP is better in some important areas: environmental effects, gorgeous cockpit shadows, terrain masking and no horizon line. Definitely going to weigh it up against FS24 before making a choice.

I like them both, I just don't have the disk space for both. XP12 without hundreds of gigs of downloaded orthophoto ground textures and other scenery just doesn't scratch the low and slow VFR itch for me. If that's a lesser concern and you mostly fly routes in the big planes and dig the procedural aspect I don't see why it has to be a one or the other choice.

Cheers Roland! If MSFS 2024 makes good on its flight modelling promises, then I can’t really say that the hassles associated with getting X-Plane up to scratch will be worth it however, as it stands, what X-Plane lacks in visual fidelity, the sim does generally make up for in other areas. As I hope I demonstrated here, XP12 can still look pretty good, although it does take quite a bit of tweaking and the results are still far more hit-and-miss than anything you would see with MSFS. As you say, it turns out one can actually be bipartisan and enjoy both sims for what they have to offer haha. I’ll probably have some more X-Plane coverage at some point and undoubtedly I’ll be covering MSFS 2024 when the time comes ; ) Many thanks, as always!

100%, Renny! Very different sims but, each excellent in their own right. As anyone who watches my channel knows, I love MSFS but, one still isn’t able to replicate quite the same level of depth with Asobo’s sim, as that which I was (hopefully) able to replicate during this flight. It’s a shame there’s no one perfect platform though - it gets rather costly running two sims, not to mention it takes up a whole lot of hard drive space haha. Many thanks and all the best! : )

Hi Underleft, The main examples that spring to mind (off the top of my head): 1) Taxiway markings / designations are generally accurate in X-Plane, designations are often “generic” in MSFS. 2) The weather in X-Plane is much more customisable (more cloud types, the ability to properly adjust visibility etc). 3) Better pushback gives a more realistic pushback experience, with much less intrusive UI also (I like to try and avoid having any on-screen UI when I’m simming). As I say, I also ‘generally’ find the flight modelling in XP to be more convincing on the heavy jets (though I don’t think the same is true when it comes to GA flight modelling). Again, I’m not bashing MSFS. All things considered, it’s my favourite sim but, it does still have some areas of weakness. I hope that clarifies things. All the best : )

I know that Laminar are very proud of their flight modelling and of course, that should always be a priority for a flight simulator but, I think they also need to acknowledge that outdated graphics are now putting a lot of people off their product. Most of the changes I made here were relatively minor so, it shouldn’t be very hard at all, for Laminar to bring XP12 up to a similar native state. Is it customary to set flaps before taxi opposed to before take off? When flying my puddle jumpers we keep the flaps up till we are ready for take off, due to what a gust of wind might do, but also to prevent FOD. That cabin sound with the engines going MCT was nice with that fan whine. Sounded very much like what I recall the sound in the cabin being on a 300. The sound in the cockpit is a tad quiet, I would think the fan whine would be very audible as the sound is loudest from the face. This is my first look at Xplane and there is a lot graphically I would love to see in MSFS.

@IntotheBlueSimulations

Hi Pythos, Yes, it’s standard practice on most commercial jets, so far as I’m aware. One exception, would be when there is snow and / or ice on the taxiways (in that case, the flaps are left retracted until the aircraft is down at the holding point - this minimises the possibility of the flap mechanisms becoming contaminated also). The sound settings on the IXEG are a bit weird; the addon overrides the default X-Plane sliders and then the built-in sliders don’t seem to do all that much haha. FTSim have certainly done a nice job with their soundpack though! MSFS is still the prettier sim but, as you say, Asobo could still learn a trick or two from Laminar (and vice versa haha ; ) Cheers once again!

For starters the rain on x-plane windows puts me off, the raindrops look/behave more like syrup, (a bit too big and too viscous) also they often appear the same way in highish altitude flight while outside clouds. Also some clouds are far less realistic than msfs. This is only my opinion and I am sure it will improve with time.

I tend to agree Stephen although, there is something about the rain animation in X-Plane, that rather hits the spot for me (I can’t quite put my finger on it). There are a lot of spurious behaviours with the rain animations in XP12 though; as you say, it will often rain in the sim when it shouldn’t and the animation physics can get quite “confused” (with direction etc) at times also haha. X-Plane is a mixed bag; I find that on limited occasions, the sim can actually look more realistic than MSFS but, MSFS looks consistently great, whereas XP is a bit all over the shop. Cheers again!

@@viktorekman863 Based on my experience this is not entirely true because in MSFS you will need a lot of airport-addons. In XP the default airports look better and are more accurate. This is not Microsoft Flight Simulator. This is X-Plane 12, and as you can see, for professionals it can be an alternative to MSFS. Of course, MSFS remains graphically unbeatable when it comes to scenery, especially in low-level flight. But in other areas, X-Plane 12 has the potential to be superior or to keep up, for example in the area of flight physics and graphical effects. The IXEG 737-300 (Classic) was already something special in XP11. In XP12 it is dreamlike. Flight simulation in the year 2023. A little dream has come true for me. The future promises even more. And considering the fact that the global climate is changing drastically due to human influences, flight simulation can be a satisfying alternative to real flying for people like me. In this review, iTB proves once again how realistic virtual flying can be these days. Of course, I would rather fly a real Boeing 737-300. I wish I lived in a time when a) a Boeing 737-300 was still one of the airline's most modern aircraft types and b) you could still fly a jet without feeling guilty about damaging the climate. This add-on is at least an acceptable substitute. What would I do without flight simulation?

Is MSFS also made for professionals ? does it have to pass a certification ?

Well, that's a pretty stupid and rude reply. MSFS is also for professionals. However, I claim that X-Plane is more likely to be used by professionals than MSFS. And there are good reasons for that. But I do not feel urgency in explaining.

Why did you feel the need to tell us that this was XP12 and not MSFS? The description and the video from the outset made it clear that this was XP12; heavily tweaked.

Hi great video one question you have the Orbx EGPH scenery working in XP12 i too have this scenery working in XP12 but i seam to have runway marker lights at the end of each runway popping up how did you get round this problem they appear just as you enter the active on both 06 and 24

Hello David, Thanks very much, I’m glad you enjoyed the flight. Hmmm, well I didn’t “knowingly” do anything on my end haha. I “installed” the scenery as per this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqfKi3t8eM6bptEsi=9Q4N0FjYsEysYjUx and what you saw during the video, was the end result for me. If you’re seeing different results, I imagine it might have something to do with the ordering of your scenery, in the Custom Scenery cfg (I don’t know how familiar you’re with tweaking such things?). Other than that, I’m afraid I couldn’t really say what the problem might be. I hope that’s of some help? Cheers and all the best : )

How would you compare the xplane 12 ga aircraft to the commanche 250 in msfs? is it on the same level or does the a2a commanche feel better to handle, I noticed when I came into xplane 12 in the demo that the landings felt more on point and realistic than microsoft flight simulator for some reason.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 7 ай бұрын
Hi Pixels, To be honest, I couldn’t really answer that question fairly, as I’ve never owned any high fidelity GA aircraft for X-Plane. I’ve never much cared for the default GA aircraft in XP, finding them to be overly sensitive, a little bit “on rails” and demonstrating some peculiar ground handling characteristics (that’s not to say that there aren’t some good aspects / aircraft also). That being said, I hear / I’m sure that there are some great payware options out there for the sim, which I’d imagine do stack up well against the A2A Comanche. For me, X-Plane has always felt better when it comes to the heavy jets; MSFS certainly has its issue but, A2A have done a great job of working around quite a few of them. Sorry for that pretty non-committal answer haha. Ultimately, I think the conclusion would really vary from addon to addon. Cheers, all the best : )

I have been trying to replicate this and I can't even get close! I can't even read the gauges in my sim (Turned up as high as it'll go and still maintain better than 10 FPS (Frames per second), which is essentially medium settings) with a 7900XTX! (I didn't think ANY Graphics card would allow that) If I get the settings even half as high as yours, (ya know, so I can even read the altitude, forget aobut being able to read "Altimeter" on the actual instrument... if so, then the sim stutters to the point of not being usable. I have a 7800X3D/7900XTX with 64G RAM, and I can honestly say, your machine is AT LEAST 2x-3x times the performance of my machine. This tells me, there is NO COMPARISON between the 4090 and the 7900XTX. AMD has no GPU that even comes close to the 4090. (7900XTX can't run VR- A HOST OF ISSUES with AMD) I REALLY REGRET this build, was essentially a waste of $2,500 as it BARELY performs better than my old machine (3600X CPU/RX5700 GPU) : should have gone with an Nvidia setup. If you want quality flight sim, AMD will not provide. Medium settings, the 7900XTX cannot handle Visual XP/ShadeX/etc/etc/etc all stacked on top of each other. EIther that, or it's the limitation of the 7800X3D. Either way, AMD great for FPS (First person shooter)- piss poor for everything else.

Does 737 classic really allow yaw damper to be turned on before IRSes or is it a bug?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 7 ай бұрын
Hi Echo, I’m no expert on the 737 but, I think that might actually be accurate (and I seem to recall that it’s the same logic on other simulated versions of the Classic that I’ve tried). It’s probably a hangover from the 737-100 / 200 (where IRS’ weren’t fitted of course) and something that Boeing only changed with the design of the NG. That’s just an educated guess though so, take it with a pinch of salt haha. Cheers, all the best! : )

Hello Steven, It really depends what you want from a sim: I think it’s fair to say that in most regards, MSFS is a significantly better platform these days (it’s the sim I spend the vast majority of my time in) however, X-Plane is still generally the better sim when it comes to flight modelling, particularly with regards to the heavy jets, rotary aircraft and anything involving the extremes of the flight envelope. X-Plane also has more accurate airports (correct taxiway designations for example) and a more capable weather engine (in terms of configuration, if not visuals). X-Plane is still the better sim if you want to practice real-world IFR etc but, otherwise, I would just stick with MSFS (it’s a cheaper sim to run and requires a lot less work to get setup etc). I hope that helps a little? All the best : )

How can I lower the exposure in X plane 12? When outside and inside the cockpit?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 7 ай бұрын
Hello Grey, As stated in the video, I found I needed to use a combination of ShadeX and VisualXP to get the desired visual effect. Even then though, X-Plane will often look over-exposed, I agree. Unfortunately, the sim still needs some work on its lighting. . . I will most likely do a video on my X-Plane settings / mods some time soon so, hopefully that will be of some help : ) Cheers, all the best!

Do these engine instruments in this and the md-82 technically qualify as analogue or digital instruments?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 ай бұрын
Haha, good question, Chris. I’m no expert when it comes to the Boeing / Maddog; I guess technically, they would still count as analogue gauges although, one could certainly argue that they are “digital”, as there are only a specific number of parameters / LED’s that can be displayed. An interesting one to think about. . . Cheers and all the best : )

Why did IXEG use -700 engine sounds on the -300? They have a totally different sound than the -700
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 7 ай бұрын
Hi Dreyes, Well, the particular soundset featured in this video, was actually created by FTSim; I’m not sure whether the default IXEG engine sounds are the same (certainly the start sounds are different). I guess the NG is far more accessible in terms of recording and IXEG probably figured most plebs, like me, wouldn’t be able to tell the defence haha. It’s a shame if they have used the wrong engine sounds for the addon though (especially given it’s pricing). . . Cheers, all the best! : )

Hi QFT, My X-Plane installation is about the same size as my MSFS installation (around 500GB). Bare in mind, that I only have UK scenery installed in X-Plane although, that is “cached” scenery as it where, whereas my MSFS installation doesn’t have any cached files. I hope that helps? All the best!
