If you like the place, get the lead techs or supervisors info! Trust me, one email after you graduate can make a HUGE difference. Get on your clinicals instructors good side! They can be referrals after graduating too! That's how I got my first job !

I'm a rad student currently on my second clinical setting and on the second day I spent basically all day in the OR and oh boy do you see some things. Keeping up with what she mentioned on the vid on being full of empathy for dealing with patients, it cannot be stressed enough especially if you're doing clinicals at a children's hospital (like me) you really need to have a lot a patience and be good with words to convey a sense of security on the child and be able to give clear instruction to the parent/guardian that's with em.

Congrats!! I know comping for the first time may be a little nerve racking but I would try to watch and then assist, perform and then comp just so you’ve seen it before hand and build confidence. The best thing to do is get your hands on stuff that’s what helped me, YOU GOT THIS! 🙌

Class of May 2022! 🤞 HOPEFULLY... These year one book prices about killing me with that $700. Only my tuition was covered but I’m still hurting from the books, uniforms, background checks, vaccinations, and drug test 😫 Edit: our shoe requirements were the same as yours. About 45 people applied this summer, there are only 16 of us that made it in. What kind of backing do you use on your markers? I ordered that sticky, clear gel kind. I’m hesitant to leave them on the badge like people do. It’s not so easy to just pick up a new set from the store.

Audrey P. For my program, we didn’t have a 1 on 1 interview process. We had a preliminary meeting with the top 50-60 applicants and then from that meeting they only sent out about 35 acceptance letters. They asked for introductions basically our name and why we chose Radiography. It was mainly based on a point system from our prerequisite grades. Hope this helped 🙂

Dumbest question ever! Ok so I may go back to college and I am a Dad of three boys, I am NOT able to stand for 8PLUS hours per day and I know there is a TON of standing. I do NOT need a sit down job, I just either need a medical exemption for a stool if that is even a thing? (born with a handicaped left foot plus I have neuropathy in both legs) so I do NOT want my limitations to exclude me from this amazing job opportunity and I also do not want to graduate and find out I am standing 80% of each shift. My wife was diagnosed recently with stage four colon cancer, and my current profession pay is crap and that will not afford me to take care of our boys if she passes on the current income (she makes more than I do now and she is still working, we have no idea how much longer she can do that). I am not dumb lol! I know this sounds lazy as H! but i am not. I work in hospitality (Hotel) management so there is a lot of sitting, but I do NOT want that either) in other words, I do not want medical coding or billing or unit coordinator or admin, those pay for crap and again, I am not seeking a sit down all day sort of role either. Michael `s theatre II Tips 1. Take all the keys to every machine, just in case yours stops working 2. Let the surgeon decide where the II comes from , where the Monitor should go, don’t assume 3. If the body part is over the steel table base, or the metal table edge, or gaps in the foam table are in the way then -solution- Move the patient. 4. Beware sandbags , can be put under hips/ chest by inexperienced theatre staff 5. Set a manual kv for extremities -so that even if you come in and are centred in the wrong place , the image will be correctly exposed. Otherwise if your going in and out, over the body part, even slight miss centering will result in a black/ underexposed image, because it will give a fresh air exposure e.g. 44kv ( which would not get through a finger). Generally hand 52kv, ankle 57kv, knee/ shoulder 62k. I once I had a student who never centred bang in the middle once, for an ankle op . The surgeon didn`t notice. The foam table makes 2 kv difference compared to HBL fresh air . 6. The ii has an obese button, which is the maximum mA output, find out where this is. If this doesn’t work and the image is still black - still under exposed , the only thing you can do is try and use the Monitor brightness/contrast - this may well not work ! there`s nothing you can do !! with this machine on this patient. 7. Save all the images- make this a habit- you don’t know which operation turns out wrong, even though it seems ok at the time 8. If your doing AP and Lateral, every time you go to the other position , swap the image over on the monitors. So you always keep an AP on one side and a Lateral on the other. This takes concentration. 9. The worst problem is obesity with osteoporosis. Obesity means the II will use a high KV eg 110kv ,so LOW contrast. The bones will be very hard to see because they don’t have any bone in them ! If the surgeon is moaning explain this LOL I once had the same problem of low contrast on a young man AP hip- biggest thigh in England. 10. Expect the first image to be wrong, wrong place , wrong orientation. Move the wheels in the direction you want to go, either towards head/ foot or in/out , make it easy for yourself , move in each direction in turn, and you will get where you want to be. Small movements. 11. Don’t let the surgeons use the flat II surface to apply a wet plaster of Paris unless you cover it first with a plastic bag, or water will get into it ,and it will go bang ! 12. For hips / DHS cover the tube ( under the table/ hip) with a plastic bag ,so blood doesn’t get into it. 13. You can get a lateral of the humerus, femur with the patient flat ( both legs down) on the table, if you come in sideways , from the opposite side, and angle 70 degrees and the body part ( shoulder/ hip/ femur) is right over the edge of the table ( so the metal table sides are not in the way) 14. If you leave the theatre for a break ( very long case) always tell someone whose sterile ( surgeon/ scrub nurse) where you will be, just in case they suddenly need you back. 15. Only ask the surgeon a question when they are not doing something dangerous e.g. with a drill. 16. At the end of the operation get a clear answer you are finished BEFORE you remove the sterile xray cover.

I have a question for anyone in this field. I'd like to transition into a healthier career that involves lots of specialized skills but also a fair bit of physical work in a clean environment and I hear rad tech might fit the bill. How much standing, walking and moving about in a hospital setting do rad techs do in a typical shift? What about other physical duties such as setting up imaging equipment and helping to move patients physically (covid safely of course)?

Hi! I’m a first year rad student. So, amount of physical work is gonna totally depend on the hospital you are at. I just had a rotation in the ER at my hospital (one of the largest in my state) and I had a ton of down time to do homework, snack, complete exams at the computers, chat, etc. I have heard though that my classmates at other hospitals are SWAMPED in their emergency department like all day. So again, totally depends. The most walking that I really do is when I go do portables or to go get patients to bring back to the xray room. Which isn’t bad at all. It’s a lot of standing so I got nice hospital clogs to help with the feet pain at the end of the day. And honestly, don’t worry about the physical labor of moving the equipment. I’m WEAK and tiny but I can do it, plus the techs give good tips and such. Moving patients isn’t bad either since you’re really never in it alone. There will always be someone to ask for help with lifting/moving (at least in my experience). I hope this helps a little (:

Yes you’ll likely get a protocol book before your first clinical shift then learn each exam as the semester progresses (depending on your program syllabus) It’s kind of a lot at first but with some practice + experience it’ll become like 2nd nature. Best of luck!

The only thing that has me anxious is that in clinicals we're only allowed to comp on each exam one time. No repeat attempts will count toward a grade. That is A LOT of pressure to be perfect, but at least now I have an idea of what to expect.

Hey Tiffany 👋 I’m excited your interested & as a rad tech student we do rotate to clinical sites such as hospitals but once I graduate and take my registry exam I will also be able to work in outpatient centers. It all depends on what specific clinic services a clinic offers. There are rad tech positions available at orthopedic offices and urgent cares etc. I hope this helped ❤️

Susan Fuda Hey there!! It is absolutely NOT too late. NEVER too late. The peers in my classroom range from all ages. In my personal opinion 40 is still young in my book. I say go for it! Congrats on your first career choice as well & thank you so much for watching 💕

Started my Rad Tech program in August. Class is fine but clinicals have been one of the worst experiences of my life. So much backbiting from the techs, bullying and bad attitude from a first year clinical instructor. Have a 91% in class but seriously considering leaving the program due to my clinical experience. Really sucks.

I’m sorry your clinical experience hasn’t been the best but your grade is so good! I would encourage you to stick it out, I know the techs may not be student friendly all the time. Does your program allow you to switch clinical sites? If so your next site you rotate to will hopefully be better. Wishing you the best of luck, you got this! 🤘👍

Same thing happened to me but I was going for ultrasound. My school didn’t handle it properly and took the techs words at my clinical site over mine. They were big bullies and gave me hell. I’ve always been a good student and made good grades. Never had any problems until that program. No one helped me and I was not progressing at all. I took the initiative and took notes and did everything I could. The techs told my school horrible things about me saying that I didn’t take initiative or anything and said I’m aggressive and made me sound like a monster. I’m a very gentle empathetic person. I kept pushing through even though how hard it was and I kept a smile on my face everyday. I eventually had to drop out because at that point I felt like I had no other choice.

i start my clinicals for radiology next week and I'm nervous and is gonna be tough cuz i work over night to pay rent and survive is gonna be tough but is only 2 years but thank god that our lecture and exams is online cuz of COVID ....only labs are in person UGH lets see how this goes

@@SeNiia I'm sorry you're going through that. I only wish you had the school experience I had when I was going for my CMA. Couple reasons why I can't go for this is because of quite a lengthy commute to school and the requirement of a car which I can't even afford in such an economy like this, and because the requiring me insurance and so much other stuff that is possible to maintain while working which in some ways doesn't make sense when they tell you you have to stop working. It just feels like so much is against you while you're in this program It's almost like working on a mangaka schedule

After watching some rad tech procedures.. I dont know how people can tolerate doing barium enemas or mixing potatos with water to make fake poop and inserting it into a patient. I couldnt do it lol

Every program is different but we typically stick to morning shift hours from 7:30 a.m to 4 p.m we do however have to do a week and weekend rotation of the over night shift. Mainly morning hours and we get to choose when we will do the overnight shift. Wishing you the best of luck in your program! Thank you so much for watching 💕

Generally, no we don’t. A lot of procedures that include needles go to different modalities like CT. The radiologist do however do deal with needles for certain fluoroscopy exams, we get the materials but never have to do any sticking. Thanks for watching 💕

I am currently taking the prerequisites for the Rad Tech program. I have a general question. After taking A&P 1 and 2, have you had to use the physiology portion when being in clinicals? I'm just curious cause I'm taking A&P2 and it's a real struggle 🙃

Hang in there! You will definitely be revisiting anatomy and as far as physiology you may revisit a few things when it comes to certain pathologies a doc. May be looking for when ordering an X-ray you’ll need to take for a patient. Out of all prerequisites A+P is most important. The one thing that pops out the most would be the 4 quadrants of the abdomen. Super proud of how far you’ve come & thank you so much for watching ❤️

Yes! But it’s recommended that you don’t (or keep your hours very low) because it does get stressful
