What on earth could I be doing with an expensive Colorimeter like the X-Rite i1 Basic Pro 2? I'll give you one hint - it has something to do with monitors... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I wanted something like this for *years*! Whenever you use two different monitors at the same time your eyes just cry for calibration. But they are so goshdarn expensive, there should be an initiative where you can borrow a device like this for a day and only pay a few bucks and the shipping ...

Next meters which meter is more acurafe obviously if you can only afford a 2k meter or buy the isf professional How much difference would professional device vs this is the question still limited to hardware and panel as far as I am concerned this could produce slightly more acurate results than the little meters like the c6 hdr2000 and the other xrite that looks similar

Awesome to see this. I'm in the wide format print industry and calibration was a nightmare before we picked up our i1 Pro years ago. We've found the re-certification process to be tedious and after years of participating, we're finding it largely unnecessary. However, over the years, clients have become less and less picky, so there's that metric as well.

Thanks for finally doing something in this area. I've been a photographer for 20+ years, and screen calibration makes a HUGE difference! I've been using a more affordable Spyder Pro tool, one like this would make for a good xmas gift tho.

Very good linus, I used the older model and Xrite is known as a standard in the printing world, we create Profiles materials (banner / vinyl / boards ) that we print onto and then measure the results and it creates internal charts on the RIP of how the ink works best, used it to keep our colour accurate from device to device.

Another great use case for creating specific ICC profiles for your monitors, is that you can import that ICC profile into Adobe Photoshop to use the "Soft Proof" feature when editing photos. This let's you know what is actually being seen. Also, you should do a tech quickie on ICC Profiles, as they apply to anything that reproduces colour electronically. In the case above, an ICC Profile for your printer will let you "Soft Proof" in Photoshop to insure that you are using colours that the printer can actually handle.
@suupaauozaden3463
@suupaauozaden3463 8 жыл бұрын
+FlipFlopGaming You don't soft proof your current monitor, since you are already watching the correct colors (if you loaded your monitor profile in your video card).
@HelenaOfDetroit
@HelenaOfDetroit 8 жыл бұрын
You still want to soft proof the image you are working on to make sure that the colours that are being used fall within the spectrum of your monitor. It's also a good idea to soft proof an ICC profile from a cheap 8 bit monitor, to see how that will look on the internet. Sorry if I didn't make it clear, but you are not soft proofing your monitor. You are merely soft proofing your artwork, so you can know that the colours you are using are actually accurate.
@suupaauozaden3463
@suupaauozaden3463 8 жыл бұрын
I think you mean gamut checker rather than soft proofing. In any case targeting a custom monitor profile seems rather pointless, you want to conform to industry standards like sRGB, AdobeRGB, etc. And display's srgb out-of-gamut will be mapped to your monitor gamut (defined by its ICC profile) with any rendering intent of your choice.

For those who keep wondering what the deal is with the word "Basic" in the name, it might help to know the other solutions are "Photo" and "Publish". The photo package includes targets that enable profiling of cameras and RGB printers. Publish adds support for CMYK printers. @Linus: Congrats on entering the world of color consistency between devices. After I finally got into this I was finally able to make sense of what was going on from capture to editing to printing.

To answer your question: yes. It's called calibration. You can calibrate instruments. The Spyder Pro 4.0 is working pretty well, but a spectrophotometer is in my future. You forgot to mention that these devices also detect ambient lighting conditions, which can affect how you perceive color, so there's only so much the manufacturer can do.

The problem is, I really think that many manufactures will manually calibrate only the Reviewing Samples to get better test results!
@Kill0rbAg
@Kill0rbAg 8 жыл бұрын
+Tom Weise Nice thought but that doesn't usually happen, professional reviewers normally reset to default before they do ANYTHING else with the display. Also: In a thorough review it doesn't matter much what the preset is, since the overall abilities of the hardware are tested and it is assumed you will calibrate it anyway. You simply cannot "calibrate away" deficiencies in the overall colour space. What isn't there cannot be added. Last but not least: Monitors that can store and work with calibrations directly (I'm not talking about your usual adjustments that you can save on your monitor-profiles) instead of having to use the gfx-card as a middle man are usually professional tools that are DEFINITELY not provided to your average Joe for testing so it will definitely be put through its paces. Nonetheless: Minor Pre-calibration is ALWAYS a thing and something that WILL result in a better test score for that particular category since most people lack the equipment to do it themselves. Therefore: good presets are a must have that should be rated accordingly.

You could measure the performance of a tape measure by recording the amount of time it takes the tape retract back into the apparatus or the amount and length of retractions before the average retraction starts to dwindle.
