This music is forever associated with the phrase "RED LEADER! INCOMING MISSILE!!!" followed swiftly by a loud "KA-CHUNK" as it wiped out my shields.

They shiuld include the X wing game of 1993, Rogue Squadron (The 1998, 2001 and 2003 games) and Tie Fighter game of 1994 Soundtrack into Star Wars Squadrons Soundtracks. What fo you think about it?

Good news, I never forgot about this... This evening I've finally come up with a way to account for the program changes (instruments changing on channels during the track due to the 16 channel limit of General Midi) and record a complete session which I can actually use correctly in Ableton live. That was supposed to be the simple explanation but if it's a bit technical basically I don't have to record a live sessions with OKish sounding soundfonts any more, I can dump the raw mini into my application of choice without all the instruments being mixed up and use some really good quality, realistic sounding VST plug ins. Give me a few weeks to play some missions and figure out be best times to trigger the mission/music events so each section flows nicely into each other and edit all in Ableton. I'm going to try my best to give this the full orchestral sound it deserves. ...also, I never thought I'd get 11,463 views, thanks all.

Hi all, thanks for the likes and chatter, sorry for neglecting the comments and requests for so long, I haven't looked to see if anyone else has uploaded anything similar but I'm up for doing some other missions and putting a little more effort into mastering the resulting audio so look out for something in the next few weeks. Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

+Neil Bryson Yes, always been planning to come back to this and doing a more complete recording in better quality and with other in game iMUSE (training mission, etc), unfortunately life got in the way. Think I'm going to bite the bullet, record the midi output, drop it in Ableton and sort the instrument changes on the channels by hand so I can use a really good set of instruments and master all whole thing. Soundfonts are nice but I know it could sound so much better :) I'll have a crack at it this month.

Excellent recording. It's actually make me decide to go grab my Pentium 1 PC, and do some direct-from-game music rips from a genuine Sound Blaster Pro (instead of using DOSBox, etc). It works perfectly for Dune 2, so I won't be surprised if it does for X-Wing. :D

I think it was about time that someone uploads some music from X-Wing, since there had been only music from TIE Fighter. I think you made a good choice in the soundfonts. My favourites are Chorium and Crisis General MIDI. (on my channel you can hear how they sound). :)

*hears ties enter the fight and several kills in the music jingles* -- -- Ah, the adaptive music instances. Too bad I never here the imposing Star Destroyer Appears! bit. Fight begins at 36 seconds. Sounds like four or five waves of TIEs or Gunboats. Lasting until about the seven minute mark, then the mission is complete until it's time to head back to the ship.

Do you think you could actually record this to MIDI instead of directly to audio? I got something like that working for TIE Fighter using MIDIOX and MF2T.EXE (Google will find it), which allows to catch all the MIDI data a game running in DOS-Box plays and record it as a text file (which can then be converted to MIDI using MF2T).

in retrospective i feel just like you. but i knew, and i think lukasarts felt it too, that space-sims were about to lose their fame so it wasn't a worth-while goal to invest in. (as for me, i discovered Baldur's Gate that year so i looked for more games like that at that time...)

Disappointed XvT didn't have the old I-MUSE system, even though the old X-Wing had almost exactly the same cockpit layouts except for the missile lock indicator, replaced by a light in your crosshairs. Did I tell you I created a KZbin account so I could tell you to continue reconstructing these MIDI tracks? DID YOU? Please do so. Or else. c:

So this isn’t an original John Williams score? I put so many hours into this game as a kid and this soundtrack was stuck in my head all these years. I now only find out that it’s midi based and not an actual orchestra like I had mistakenly assumed all these years
