How did you do the reverb on your mic? Having trouble doing that..
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul! I go through the steps in the video. Are you not getting any reverb at all? This video is based on a fresh scene. A common problem I'm seeing with people adding this to existing scenes is that they often have their busses turned down. If you're following the steps in this video, also make sure that busses 13-16 are turned up to unity level. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for watching and commenting! -Chad

@@paulbae2082 Make sure to watch the entire video but here's a super basic synopsis of how the signal flow works. Channel -> Bus 13 (for example), Bus 13 goes to FX 1 (reverb), the reverb signal shows up on the mixer FX1L Return and FX1R Return (found on the 3rd bank of faders). In order to hear reverb on your mic, the channel must be up and unmuted, you must be sending to Bus 13 (in this example), Bus 13 must be up and unmuted, and FX1 Left and Right need to be up and unmuted. If any one of those things is not happening, you will not get the desired effect. So, that's where I would start :) -Chad

Just a suggestion...instead of shelving the effect return lows and highs, shelve the send. Works especially well with reverbs. It’s a little more natural, cuts the mid, removes distracting high frequency tails and tends to glue the tracks together better.

Aloha Chad ... We recently purchased a X32 Console and X32 Rack for our church main and extension campuses here on Maui. I've been on information overload for three months now pouring through the Behringer, Sweetwater, and Drew Braschler videos. I'm technically inclined but sound tech challenged and migrating from a PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2 to these new mixers has been stressful ... especially when I recommended the X32 and then tasked with the conversion responsibility. Anyways I wanted to say thank for your step by step approach on this topic and I'm hoping I can interact with you directly after viewing your videos if I have additional questions. Mahalo ... Danny

Man this is the best one I've seen for step for step training. You didn't go to slow nor to fast. And didn't go techncial with the board cause some don't know what certainly mean yet on this board. Thank you for giving basic instruction. I can learn the other techncial words later. Just want to learn how to work my board. But j do have one question. So send to fader only allows you to send your FX to specific channel correct? My next question I want to know more on EQ my vocal. I have a good grasp on how to adjust and etc but I'm confused on whats best to have the vocals at and then the mic for speaking? Do you have a video for that?
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Demetrius! Thanks for the kind words. When it comes to conceptualizing effects, it's helpful to think of how it works in the analog world. If you wanted reverb for instruments, you would create a Band Reverb mix in which you may send level from you snare, toms, acoustic, etc. That Band Reverb mix gets SENT to an outboard FX unit that makes all those channels sound 100% wet (full-on reverb). That wet signal now leaves the FX unit and RETURNS to the mixer where you can blend in however much of that reverb you want to hear. The terminology is important here for full grasping what goes where. So, to answer you first question, Send-On-Fader allows you to control how much level is being SENT from individual channels (snare, toms, acoustic, etc.) to the FX Rack. You can then control how much you hear of that effect by turning up the corresponding RETURN channels (on layer 3). Regarding vocal EQ, you may want to check out this video here - kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=a7Gzqu3iPeg&ar=1567816087092 I hope that helps :) -Chad

We just got the Midas M32 for our church. This video was incredibly helpful. Thank you! One thing we're struggling with is sending our full house mix to a separate single monitor in a "baby room". We're using Bus 9, but can only route our main left or main right to that Bus, but not both. So we're losing one side of our stereo mix. Is there a simple way around this? Or are we missing something obvious?
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you have routed to bus 9 but it likely is not the Main L or R. On the M32, mixes can only receive individual channels BUT what you want is to use a Matrix. You CAN send mixes to a Matrix. Here's an old video where I talk about this - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqKZk32Eh7arkLs Hope this helps :) - Chad

@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 7 жыл бұрын
Just like any other signal, you can send a pre-fade level to a monitor feed and adjust accordingly (this video may help - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJLLh3WdrN9_bck ). Where it gets tricky is if the vocalist only wants to hear reverb on their own voice. In that instance, you would need to make a separate reverb that's designed just for the monitors. Hope this helps -Chad

Great Video! Is it possible to send an entire Choir into a Sub Group, and send the group to a reverb effect? instead of having to send each indevidual mic to the reverb
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure what the positive difference would be but if you really wanted to, you could send your choir to say Busses 1 and 2 (linked for stereo), then take two open channels, set their input sources to Bus 1 and Bus 2 and then send those to a reverb bus. As you can see, this is quite wasteful as you would use an additional 2 busses and an additional 2 channels. -Chad

Hi Chad, first of all thank you so very much for this video. @15:21 you were cutting frequencies. I have 2 delay FX set up for FOH and stream. Would you cut out frequencies on both? I am having problem hearing the bass and drum on my stream. If fader level is not enough, can I make adjustment to my stream bus eq settings and/or the bass and drum eq channels to be able to hear the bass and drum on a phone device please. I would appreciate some detailed explanation on how to achieve that please.
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 3 жыл бұрын
I feel like you’re asking 2 very different questions. Haha. As far as the delay FX, yes, I would probably EQ both as needed. On a side note, I’m a little confused as to the purpose of having 2 separate delays. In my experience, generally, 1 should be effective unless there are special circumstances involved. In regards to your bass and drums on the stream, are you having a hard time hearing them all together or just the low end frequencies? In the room, are the drums isolated with a shield and roof or open? Does the bass player have an amp on stage? There are a lot of factors that may be involved in this situation. EQing the drums and bass will also affect FOH. EQing the stream bus will also affect all the other instruments on the stream. If you haven’t already, be sure to watch this one - m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5XWfI2Ah82MZ6s Hope that helps :) -Chad

Excellent tutorial. Can you tell me why do you mute FX returns (using buttons in mute section) and not the busses which are the source for effects? Thanks
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday Жыл бұрын
Good question. If you mute the bus, the last bit of audio going through the bus will complete it’s cycle and then fade out. There may be situations where you’d want this but muting the returns will cause an absolute immediate mute on the effect. For example, if someone accidentally turned the reverb time up to 20 seconds on the vocal reverb. If you were to mute the bus, it would take 20 seconds for the verb to finally fade out. Rather, if you were to mute the return, it would be turned off immediately. There are times where you may need one or the other but I use the mute group function as an “oh crap!” Immediate kill switch :) I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting! -Chad

I want to make sure I have our routing correct for sending to IEMs... Vocals -> Bus 13 -> DCA Control -> FX Return channels -> Bus 2 (IEM Mix). Does this seem right or is there a more direct way of doing it? Also, at times we are hearing that the Reverb and Delay in the IEMs using this sort of routing are washing out all the sound in the performer's ears. This happens when we increase the level of the DCA. Any way to combat this? Thanks for these great tutorials!
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 4 жыл бұрын
Dewayne Pinion Yes, this is correct. However, if the musicians don’t like volume changes, you have 2 options. - You could use a separate reverb just for the IEMs that is not routed to the house mix. - Or, you could have the DCA affect the FX return rather than the FX send. If you’re sending the FX pre-fade to the ears, with this routing, adjusting the DCA will only affect the house and not the ears. The only downside being that you cannot do the same swell fx but that may not be a deal breaker for you. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting! -Chad

I would like yo ask for your help regarding our fx mix sent to IEMs. I have the vintage reverb assigned to fx1 (Bus 13) on the x32 for my leading vocals, the fx return was thence sent to mix buses 1 to 8 for IEM. That leaves me with a problem: the vocals can no longer control their IEM . if they turn their volume down the reverb remains sending the mic signal despite the mic fader hsd been lowered down completely. Any advice will be appreciated. God Bless you.

@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 2 жыл бұрын
I’m having a hard time understanding your question but it sounds like you’re asking about signal path. Let’s use vocals as an example. We’ll be sending a mix of vocals to the vocal verb bus. Generally, I’m trying to create a blended sound for the vocals so, in this instance I’m sending all the vocal channels at a post-fade level of 0.0. To do this: - I make sure the Vox Verb bus is set to 0.0 - Select the Vox Verb bus and hit the Sends-On-Fader button - Turn up all your vocal channels to around 0.0 (unity). - Disengage the Sends-On-Fader button so that it is no longer flashing. - Turn up the Vox Verb Return channels (found on bank 3) to hear the desired amount of reverb in the house mix. I hope that clears things up a bit :) -Chad

Good question. Maybe for vocal effects specifically but I wouldn’t want to mute the instrument effects in a moment like that. It would change the sound in a bad way and wouldn’t really have any effect on the intelligibility of the person speaking. I don’t really use mute groups for anything else (I use DCAs instead) so I have plenty to go around and it doesn’t hurt me to have one for each effect :)

I agree with Paul Bae and Jessid Sanchez, and have the most recent firmware installed. I followed your steps, step by step. I can get reverb, delay in Main (church has only 1 line array) when “fader flipping” like in the beginning of your video. After I follow your steps I get no effects 8:45 mark, and I programmed in A bank. At 6:50 mark, Button 9, on my firmware, I have another box popping up, top is blank, then L1, L2, L3, L4. I think you have that box too in your video but only see a portion of it and it appears you left it on the blank area. Don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. Nothing is muted, Busses up, DCA’s are up. Fx sends and returns up. Not sure how to check if Fx returns are routed to the main. I figured they are since I can hear the effects on the main when fader flipping. Thanks for your videos man!!!

Hey Terry! Here are some things to check. In this example, I want to have vox 1 have reverb and delay. We’ll assume that the vox verb is on bus 14 (fx2) and the delay is on bus 15 (fx3). - verify that vox 1’s fader is up and unmuted in the main mix - from the sends view, verify that vox 1 is sending level and is unmuted going to bus 14 and bus 15 (I suggest you set it to unity to start with for these mixes). - from the busses layer, verify that busses 13-16 are turned up to unity and are not muted. - also, verify that they are NOT being sent to the main mix. For example, select bus 13 and make sure the Stereo Bus light is not engaged (to the left of the screen). - without sends-on-fader blinking, go to the FX returns on the 3rd layer and verify that they are unmuted and have level (-10db is usually a good starting point for subtle but noticeable fx). - verify that the FX returns ARE in the main mix. For example, select FX 2L Return and make sure the Stereo Bus light IS engaged to the left of the screen. - finally, in case someone has been really messing around on the scene you’re working from, go to the Effects menu and verify that FX 1 source is set to Bus 13, FX2 is set to bus 14 etc. Let me know if that sorts you out :) -Chad

I don't think I've discussed that on here yet. Great suggestion. I don't often have a lot of remaining busses for that kind of thing but when I do (or in the studio) I generally setup a compressed bus for vocals to maintain consistent volume when going from a single vocalist to an entire group. If I'm feeling up to it and if I have a system that is tuned well, I'll often throw my drums (minus overheads) into a couple of groups and highly compress one group to blend in with the other less compressed group. I'll definitely do a video on these soon. Until then, look up parallel compression. There are many great videos on KZbin worth watching on the subject. -Chad

Once you set up a network, you can add a MAC/PC with a program like Ableton to send MIDI commands at different points in your set for bypass, tap tempos, etc. Unless you're using a main MAC/PC for your master clock to other machines, it's easiest to use the same machine running your tracks/click.

Richard Foulkes Usually you would not put individual effects for each channel. Instead, you have 4 effects slots that are designed for sending a mix to. In my example, I have a reverb designed for band elements, one for vocals, and a delay (generally for just vocals). Many other engineers will use different types of reverbs and delays as needed for their instruments - such as plate verb, hall verb, slap back verb, delay. These methods are more efficient in live environments than inserting a reverb straight into individual channels. Hope that helps :) -Chad

That's a topic of much debate! Haha! I'll say this: I used to work for a major music retail chain and would NEVER willingly sell a Behringer analog console, however, while I was attending school overseas, the X32 became really popular in America. I said to myself, if they can last at least 3 years, then that will surpass my expectations. Sure enough, they're still going strong, they're very affordable, integrate well with there other systems, and are easy to program. In college, I mostly mixed on Yamaha and Avid consoles. With general knowledge of those, I still found the X32 (overall) easy to navigate and setup. There are DEFINITELY some features I wish they had that they don't, but overall, I am quite impressed with what they do for the money. Also, when we do installs, I usually price out an X32 with the Midas DL16 digital snakes. This gives you a better quality sound for not much more cost.

Heywoodj1969 Hello sir, I know it’s hard to read emotion in text, so please understand that what I’m about to say is intended to be read with love and patience. This is basically a free service that I spend a ton of time and my own resources to produce as a teaching tool for others online. That said, despite the unnecessarily salty bits of your comment, for training purposes, I would like to address some very valid points that you raise: -1- You are correct that one common approach to FX DCAs is to have the DCA control the Return of the FX rather than the Send. Part of this is due to the fact that that has been a hardware limitation of many mixers over the years (the Yamaha M7 comes to mind) where the DCA was limited to input channels and did not have the ability to control bus masters. In the approach shown in this video, you have both options available: the FX returns are located on the Assignable Encoders while the FX sends are being controlled by a DCA or multiple DCAs. Spend some time watching and listening to any good guitarist who knows how to work a pedal board and you will see that there are certain FX that can only be achieved by having a volume pedal in front of your time-based effects (reverb and delay). I highly encourage you to try it before you knock it. You may be surprised by the results :) And yes, to catch a certain vocal phrase, you need to push up the fader just before or just during the phrase you wish to repeat (depending on how smooth you want the effect). As a FOH engineer, it’s vital for us to know where those phrases are and to be able to treat our mixer like a musical instrument and anticipate those moments. -2- You are absolutely correct that there are somewhat dedicated FX knobs in the sends encoder section of the console. There are a few reasons I don’t love that approach: Where those knobs are located is very cumbersome when actively mixing. With my approach, I find that reaching for assignable encoders or DCAs with my right hand allows me to keep my left hand free for regular mixing whereas reaching a hand up to the top center of the console is awkward, obstructs my view and causes me to have to switch hands depending on which faders I need to grab. Also, (and this is fairly specific to my audience but) I design these videos to help churches that often have volunteers as audio techs - every time you restart the X32, those 4 encoders will default to mixes 1-4 and you will need to select buses 13-16 to be on the default FX sends. It’s one more step for a volunteer to figure out and if they forget, then they are accidentally adjusting monitor mixes and I can’t risk that. Haha. Finally, again I say this without malice, in 2019 it’s easy to sit behind a keyboard and anonymously bash someone online. I encourage anyone reading this to change that mindset. Pretend that you’re talking face-to-face with someone using the same respect you would hope to receive yourself. I believe that is an approach our society desperately needs right now. Honestly, I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and to comment. You raised valid points worth mentioning. I only ask that you do so with a better attitude in the future or not at all. Have a fantastic day. -Chad
