Hiring Marines for boarding crews (two ways) in X4 FOUNDATIONS base game, no mods, no expansions. The difference in price for skills between buying in bulk from a station and hand picking our crew makes it worthwhile to shop around.

If you use the first way to hire marines from VIG or RIG Wharfs and Shipyards you will get better ones than the other factions.

Someone pointed out that defense stations have better marines to hire than most other stations.

I'll have to look into that. The pirate base has a pretty good selection, and lots of npcs on two big docks, so I've always gone out there. Thanks for the tip!

Well, here's my impression of hiring marines at defense platforms. 1. About half the stations aren't set up to let small or medium ships dock, but we can weed them out by having a pilot do the driving. If a pilot can't land, neither could we, so some time saved by giving a dock and wait order. 2. The defense platforms I checked (twice) only had a single dock, but were well staffed, and had a higher ratio of marines to service crew npcs, and the marines had a pretty even split of recruits and veterans. Overall, this is something I'm going to use in the future. Thanks for the heads up @BKMars-gw4ry ! EDIT~ It's worth mentioning a Defense Platform doesn't allow mass hiring the way a wharf or shipyard does. So, it's all on foot meet and greet.
