Just got the X570 ProArt. Was waiting for a revised X570 board with Thunderbolt as the ASRock X570 Creator had some issues and appears to be discontinued. Tons of B550 boards with TB, but that platform is far too constrained with PCIe bandwidth. The only cons I have with the Asus X570 ProArt is the removal of PS/2 (really Asus? The B550 ProArt has it!) and missing PCIe x1 slots as I have cards I would like to add. I can "get around" that problem with a m.2 to PCIe adapter and some slot splitters (crypto miners are good for something, these things used to be expensive and impossible to find!).

Sounds good, but I'm happy with my Gb Aorus X570 mobo which rarely needs the chipset fan in my airy case. It was interesting to hear the kind of refinements on offer, but I should look at a new PCIE4 M2 drive before any other upgrades.

Yes some of the original X570 board were actually decent with their fans - the X570 Aorus Master was particularly good after BIOS updates. Some were not so good though! The original ASRock X570 Taichi had a very poor chipset fan. Going fanless with a competent heatsink is an improvement for somebody buying a new board. Luke

Excellent review, thanks! I bought one of the cheaper X570S boards - the MSI Tomahawk. When installing Windows from a USB Key onto my gen 4 NVME drive, I kept getting system errors when copying the install files over to the ssd. I eventually narrowed it down to my RAM (G.Skill Trident Z 3200) - it didn't have an XMP profile set and bizarrely the board didn't like this at all. I also noticed also that the board decided to lose my PBO settings when I was fiddling with the Fan tuner. The BIOS is first release, hopefully they will fix these things in future updates. Other than that I can run my 5600x with a negative all core CO setting of -30 and a plus 200Mhz clock offset.

How do you recognize 'fanless' chipset on Asus motherboards? For Asrock, Gigabyte and MSI they are called x570S (the S being for fanless), but the Asus have no x570s names anywhere, so i don't know how to recognize first from second gen. One of the reasons i didn't buy original x570 is that only Aorus extreme (780€) had no fans, that seems fixed, but Aorus master (my favorite original) is still pretty pricy.

Indeed for the NAND packages, however there can be heat soak through the PCB from the controller. Some backside cooling may help this (though front side is definitely more useful). Also depends on the individual SSD layout too, albeit non-NAND components on the rear side is not very common. Luke

I have wished for at least one PCIe x1 slot to put a sound card in it and still allow for Thunderbolt 4 as an option (addin card). One less M.2 slot would be acceptable. In my use case, I do not see more than two M.2 slots necessary (max 2x 4TB = 8TB).
@Belznis
@Belznis 2 жыл бұрын
@@astarothmarduk3720 yes, I wonder why they do that. I mean external sound cards are most of the time so much better. Either they should go from pci to some other system or at least add a slot for the sound card. On a mAtx board they slam 2 of them, and you can't really use them without an extension cable, because of the GPU, but a normal ATX board like that does not have even one ;/

@@Belznis Luckily, there are other options: Asus ProArt X570-CREATOR WIFI Asus ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING WIFI II Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero MSI MEG X570S ACE MAX (and some more from them) I understand that some people want to put more M.2 storage, but a more balanced board with 10 Gbit/s Ethernet and/or Thunderbolt 4 allows for NAS which is even better for those in need. I like the VRM implementation of Gigabyte X570S Aorus Master very much, but power consumption is surprisingly high given the effort, stock on idle and load. Overclocking I would not do on a productive system, even PBO not. But ECC memory I would use, together with the huge cache of 5900X/5950X it works better (even moreso with the new 3D cache CPU variants which are to come). That is why I have not researched MSI too much.

If you buy an m2 with an integrated heatsink, use it, it will work perhaps even better, if you don't have it integrated, the heatsink Most of the brands tell you not to remove the label because you lose warranty, personally I tell you personally I remove the label since it interferes between the ship and the heatsink that originally comes on the motherboard and it is there all the time cold at 28 C to 32 C

On Windows, if you install the newest driver 10.050, it works without problems (1 Gbit/s tested because of router limitation). On Linux, I had to use kernel 5.10 or newer which is readily available now. Intel had to revise their silicon twice which is embarrassing. I do not buy brands, but quality. Judging from the past is not recommended. The newest revision B3 of the Intel i225v NIC I would trust because there is no newer revision after some time, and there is a limit of embarrassment I assume. X570S boards or Asus B550-XE use this revision, older B550 boards not. ASRock uses Killer (Intel or Realtek in disguise) which is not acceptable marketing gimmick. MSI I would not recommend for prosumer/workstation use on desktop platforms, because ECC RAM is not supported on B550/X570 boards.

I like to build a Linux host/Windows guest VM configuration and GPU passthrough using a high corecount Zen 3 CPU (5900x/5950x) and because of lacking iGPU two discrete graphics cards (one low power/low end like 1030 GT/1050 (Ti) which can be used with four PCIe lanes) aka dGPUs. The Asus ProArt B550-CREATOR was tested by Level1Techs and puts all chipset in IOMMU group 15 which is unfortunate (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5Czl5Z7qreUfKM). Does this board behave differently? The Asus X570 Dark Hero has a suitable IOMMU mapping. Gigabyte provides the BIOS setting "Initial Display Output" to choose the primary GPU, how about Asus? In the user manual the BIOS settings are not mentioned (unlike Gigabyte). I assume that this BIOS option is not too important because I can blacklist the GPU I want to passthrough in the kernel options and do not need to fiddle with BIOS at boot time anymore.
@KitGuruTech
@KitGuruTech 2 жыл бұрын
Very good question and I am not entirely sure on the answer to be honest as I did not fully check the IOMMU groupings. My UEFI screenshots show that there is a setting for disabling/enabling SR-IOV, but that may not be exactly what you need. My own previous experience with ASUS boards has also been positive with virtualisation and pass-through *when* the board is designed for it (i.e. a high-end board on a high-end platform like X570, but perhaps not so on B550). Sorry I cannot be of more help with this one. Luke

@@KitGuruTech SR-IOV is vGPU (sharing a GPU between virtual machines) which still is marketed as an enterprise feature, only possible on Quadro and Tesla cards, and you have to pay annually for the nVidia vGPU driver, using a license server. A hack allows to use vGPU on GeForce cards as well, but you have to pay the subscription per user and year. GPU passthrough means that you have dedicated GPUs for every VM, used exclusively with the common driver. Since March 2021 nVidia allows GPU passthrough to one Windows 10 guest VM, no hack necessary anymore, to facilitate graphical application usage on guest OS. Thus you need two graphics cards if the CPU has no integrated graphics (iGPU).

This silent is BS. I have a normal Aorus X570 Pro and while it has a fan, that fan almost never runs. I only ever heard it when starting the PC then immediately stops

@@swizzler8053 I saw you bought an Aorus Master x570s, one or two questions: Would it accept 4x 32 Gb memory modules in 3200Mhz (very much rare brand: Markvision, but I m going for that one because it s very cheap actually) Can gigabyte motherboards hold it with overclocking? (I am a Asus user and i saw sooooo many MSI users with dead motherboards that I know I will never buy one)
