About addiction. The first melodic solo represents the user getting the high. The second heavier one represents the need for another fix. The master is the drug or whatever you’re addicted to and the puppet is the one who is addicted. James hetfield- rhythm guitar and vocals is a the lyric writer and he is absolutely a master at it.

The first hard part of the song is a addict looking for his fix. The 2nd part: the middle melodic part is where he got it and represents the euphoria of the High. The 3rd part where it goes back to being hard is the crash and the repetitive nature of the junky starting the cycle all over again. AT the start of the 3rd part is the only time the addict talks back to the drug. "Master you promised only lies... Everyone is laughing at my cries... FIX ME."

When I first heard this, when it came out in 1986, I probably didn't understand the drug metaphor, either. I was only 13 years old, of course, and just thought it was an epic jam. My point is... Nobody makes music like this anymore. They don't make accessible heavy metal anymore, is what I'm saying. I'm sure there are plenty of heavy bands kicking ass nowadays but the genre seems diminished. Bassist Cliff Burton was killed while they were on tour in Europe for this album. The music was never as good after. The first 3 albums are the real Metallica. Period! RIP Cliff Burton
