I am considering swapping my stock converter/charger to a xantrex hfs. Im unsure of how to connect the hfs to the 12 volt trailer panel. I don't see an extra output other than the large battery terminals on the rear of the hfs that connect to the batteries with higher current to charge the batteries. Couldn't possibly connect to the same contacts could it? please explain.

Check out the diagram on page 20 of the Installation Manual. www.altestore.com/static/datafiles/Others/Freedom%20HFS%20Installation.pdf There is an AC in from shore power or a generator, an AC out to your loads panel, and a DC in/out from the battery bank. The manual gives complete instructions.

This question may be addressed in another video I haven't found yet so direct me if necessary but I'm trying to figure out how to determine the charging amp rating I need. This inverter/charger is rated 55A but how do I know if that is more than I'll need or not enough, what do I use to determine charger amps? If this helps I've got 3 200W of panels in series, will be installing a 15A AC shore power connector as well as connecting my vehicle alternator (rated150A DC) to 2 100Ah Battle Born lithium batteries. Plan to add third battery later this year. Enjoy your videos and thanks for the help.

Great question, I will add it to my list to do a video on it. Each battery has a preferred charge rate, how fast or slow it wants to be charged. While the BattleBorns can handle a C/1 charge, 100A for 100Ah battery, the manufacturer recommends a max of C/2, so 50A per 100Ah. So if you have 2 100Ah batteries in parallel, that is 200Ah total. So a max charge rate of 100A is recommended. The inverter/charger has a 55A rate, so that is basically a C/4 charge rate, which is great. If you have completely used all 200Ah of the battery bank, it would take 4 hours with that charger to completely recharge it.

Correct. The inverter/charger would not be involved at all with charging the battery with the alternator.

No. The charger is an AC charger from the grid or a generator. You still need a solar charge controller for charging from solar panels.

The Xi is only an inverter, the HFS is an inverter/charger.

can i dedicate the xantrex hfs 2000 watt for off grid use (full time) and will it work with the champion inverter generator #73536i as an ac source ?

The HFS is UL458 listed for mobile use in trucks, RVs, and boats. If you want an inverter for an off-grid cabin or house, you need one listed for UL1741. If you are looking to have a 12V battery bank, there is the Magnum MS2012 or the Samlex EVO-2212. Either one could take the power from a 2000W generator. It is designed for off-grid in an RV, so no, it will not damage it using it off grid.

I don't know what the total harmonics distortion is, it's not included in the documents I have access to. Are you concerned about the harmonics potential interference or noise?

Yes. The inverter/charger can charge the batteries with AC, but you can also charge the batteries with a separate solar charge controller and solar panels.
