I'm so thankful that you and so many other people made videos for this. Watching multiple techniques helped a lot. The hardest part truly is getting the dang case open. It turned out 3 of the back tabs had snapped off making it near impossible to get the back open. After wresting with it for actual hours I finally got it almost there and then just gave it a hard yank and it separated. I hope I never have to open it again :D. Good news is, even with my lack of solder skills, it's not hard to just heat that ball off it pretty much just rolled into my trash can and then I kept applying more heat to make sure it was completely off the contacts and I was nervous after putting it back together (I tested before putting the case back on) but it worked!! Thanks so much!

Thanks buddy. After weeks of frustration banging my xbox and loosing connection online during multiplayer when changing maps, I decided to have a quick scout on KZbin. Found your vid and bought a torq no.10 and set to work. Mine was full of dust. Cleaned the rails and laser with some methalated spirits and 're assembled hoovering it on the way. Only problem I encountered was a missing memory flap which I found in the Hoover bag. Thanks again. PROBLEM RESOLVED!

gloooopo any tips for taking off the top of the console to get to the torq screws? I’ve tried using metal picks ad tooth picks and even my fingers to hold the pins up but it just won’t come off. And I’m very scared of breaking this console.

@@joshtm66 it didn't come off as easy for me as it did in the video. Pay attention to the video from 3.:18 onwards. It's all about releasing those clips. It does help if you've got a decent pick. Light also helps. I didn't fully release all the clips but it still came apart with a bit of force. Listen for the click when you push the pick in to hear if it released. Hope this helps buddy.

Worked on the second try. I cleaned the lens once, and tested the Xbox while the plastic were still all removed. Did not work. Opened the DVD drive again, re swabbed the lens a second time, tested the console and it now works. I cant tell if it will still work in a few months. I don't use the console much anymore. But it's nice knowing that right now, it works! Thanks alot for the tutorial!

For me it was the hard drive came unplugged... a year ago I had the tray won't open and then wouldn't read disc error. Replacement disc drive was $25 on Amazon. I had to swap the old board from the old disc drive to the new drive because of the firmware. Just used a soldering iron to unhook the wires and re soldered them back together. Been working like new ever since. Mine has no covers at all to prevent overheating. It was a free console so I don't care. I too have been an automotive technician for 11 years. Same story as you. I got out of the trade and enlisted in the Army as a combat engineer. I'm happier with it.

I noticed the two adjustment screws from another video but wasn’t sure how much of an impact that would have unless of course, like you said, they are severely off-level. Another video mentioned the laser mechanism slides back and forth on the rails and I’m thinking mine may be jammed from accumulated dust. Will have to wait to open it to know for sure.

I have my game DVDs loaded onto my HDD so that they don't have to read much, but during initial loading, they have to be able to read the copy protection section of the disk to verify that you really own the game in question. Once this procedure outlined in the video is unable to fix the problem, you'll get the situation where the problem gets worse with time. Initially it might take 10 tries before a disk reads properly, then 100 tries, then 1000 tries, etc. Soon you'll be trying all day long to try to get your favorite game to just read the darned copy protection part of the disk to get the game to load from your HDD. Microsoft or their suppliers designed the drive to fail by wearing out the laser diode with too much current flowing through it obviously for too prolonged a time with too much copy protection reads and such. Like it or not, eventually you have to order a new laser head assembly that is a direct replacement for one of the 4 or so different manufacturers and models of DVD drive. Apparently the make and model can be determined in two different ways, the easiest way is the shape of the DVD drive tray cutout. There are videos that talk about the 4 different kinds. My brother ordered 2 such corresponding manufacture / model head assemblies from China. It took about 2 weeks to deliver in the very inexpensive postal mail. The cost of 2 such units was well under $10 Canadian including shipping. I installed the laser disk read head assembly and it didn't work at all. My brother then recalled that the manufacturer of the laser disk read head assemblies placed a glob of solder over a set of inline three contact wires to prevent damage / aging or whatever of the laser diode. The solder glob must be "extracted" by using a de-soldering procedure typically that uses a standard copper braided solder wick and some soldering paste / flux. The set of inline three contact wires must cleaned of flux because flux conducts electrical current, then the wire contacts be inspected closely with a magnifying glass to insure that no solder remains that connects those wires with one another--just that it secure each wire. Once this is done, the assembly can be installed / put back into place, and the DVD drive reassembled. My foolish brother had the idiot idea of testing the drive with the DVD top lid off, but the unfortunate inserted game test disk is never properly secured and gets roughly mangled by being loose and jumping around. He insisted that a magnetic DVD spindle be removed from a non-working other CD ROM or DVD drive, but none were an exact match and again the poor game disk suffered more abuse. The best way to test the thing's functionality is actually to just reassemble the whole DVD drive and just give it a try. It turned out that it read the game disk completely reliably from the first try. A couple of years later and the repaired DVD laser head assembly is still working fine, reading disks like a champ. When this latest laser begins to fail as usual, I'll still have the second spare brand new unit to install knowing this time to have to remove/extract wick off that glob of solder covering the inline three wire contacts and to test it by assembling everything properly and just trying it out.

@@mickchuknit324 The Xbox 360 is designed to detect "tampering" and likely all of the key parts are firmware encoded as a "matched set" so that no other drive can be used with a given game motherboard and processor, etc. The DVD drive's serial number has to be a match with what the firmware of the motherboard of the console expects otherwise it likely shall just act like a big brick of stone and may not explain the actual troubles of mismatched serial numbers of equipment used. So go ahead if you insist to waste your valuable time and money doing this some other way not already proven to work. The laser head assembly is at such a low level that it cannot have such a serial number for such checking for matching the original equipment that was manufactured as a whole gaming console device. Almost every single major component of these consoles is an integrated solution against software piracy and/or for copy protection so that just using a general purpose computer DVD reader or re-writer is NOT going to work at all. Likely every checkable aspect of the original drive has to be in-place in order for the drive to properly access the copy protected original game disks so that if the replacement "drive" reacts differently to reading such copy protection parts of an original game disk, the machine of the whole console shall refuse to operate normally and so shall refuse to work at all. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKq6YZ-Oo9R5haM "defeating" security on Xbox 360 DVD reader

Didnt work for mine. When i opened her up i was surprised at the lack of dust, and the inside of the disk drive had barely any. Not sure what the issue with mine is as it play music cds, but not games or dvds unless i smack her just right just right befor the disk is in all the way up untill it loads. Once its loaded it will play whatever game it is indefinitely. It just isnt reading the disk properly at the start or something which keeps it initiating that super fast game disk spin.

is it vertical or does it lay flat? if it lays flat, the lazer lens is grinding on the disc and you should probably stop doing that, and if it is vertical, tip it flat and it should stop, because the disc could be out of position in the tray.

@@jovav8 Leaving it vertical puts a lot of strain on the laser lens and motor. Think about gravity and how it is fighting it. Always better to have a disc based console flat and even. That would also apply to any disc based system. Like CD, Blu-Ray etc..

So for calibrating the screws for the bars, there is a number of screws that adjust each part of the bar. The screw he showed us was just for the top part of the bar. The bottom of the bar has its own screw below it you adjust. This is how I lowered the bar that was higher than the other bar. One screw doesn't adjust the entire bar. Same goes for the sides of the bar going left and right. But it didn't make a difference for me because it turns out the motor for disc spinning is not spinning my disc. Hope this helps

markisparklez ! I did it about a month or so ago. Nothing helped. I cleaned the lens with rubbing alcohol, oiled the rails, and put a voltmeter on the terminal as I turned the screw to increase voltage to the lens a little bit and the disc still cannot be read. Only thing I didn’t try was re-aligning the rails but I don’t think it would have worked either. These Xboxes are pieces of shit. I literally used mine maybe 5-6 times in 13 years and babied it the whole time and it still broke just sitting there all this time.

My disc tray was getting stuck so I vacuumed everything out and put mineral oil in the sliding parts of the tray, well I ended up fixing the tray but... now it won't read discs =( so then I taped a piece of toilet paper to a disc and and put it in as a makeshift lens cleaner and it didn't really pick up any dust nor did it work after =( Can you give me any advice?

there is a few things you can calibrate.....you can calibrate the rails on the disc drive by turning your screws clockwise and counter clockwise. you can also adjust the lens by using a multi meter and changing resistance. Its common for most drives to be factory set any where between 4KΩ to 6.4KΩ

So for calibrating the screws for the bars, there is a number of screws that adjust each part of the bar. The screw he showed us was just for the top part of the bar. The bottom of the bar has its own screw below it you adjust. This is how I lowered the bar that was higher than the other bar. One screw doesn't adjust the entire bar. Same goes for the sides of the bar going left and right. But it didn't make a difference for me because it turns out the motor for disc spinning is not spinning my disc. Hope this helps

I can’t play Tekken 6 and also not reading the disc, is there anyway to fix it except opening it?

For the part with the surgical pick if you don't have one you can just rip it out and break the clips (only if you don't mind breaking it) my Xbox is now a top loader because the disc tray broke and I just pulled the tray out now I place the disk on the motor and put the cowl for the disc drive over it and turn it on

Before you go to all this effort. Take a vacuum and crank it on the open disc drive. Whenever my discs don’t read this fixes it

Funny enough I still see open tray instead of the game disc sometimes so this weekend I am going to crack my system open...
