Just got done doing this with my sons X-box. Was on a business trip and my son called me and told me his X-box had the e-74 error. I told him that it was probably toast but that I would look at it for him when I got back. Just got done following the instructions in this video, and the fix worked. My son is now upstairs playing Mine-craft once again. The only thing that I did different was that I couldn't find my heat gun that I usually use on my RC planes to stretch them taut, so I used my wife's hairdryer. Thanks for the video, you saved me some cash!

Loved the "Are you done" whisper at the end. My daughter constantly records me working on my electronics with her iPod, As soon as I break out my torque wrench and repair kit she goes running for her iPod and makes sure my water cup is full, she loves to narrate as well so the whisper made me laugh a bit.

Thanks man for sharing this info, I just successfully fixed this error on an HDMI unit using your hotplate stovetop method and she boots right up and runs like new. Thank you. Don't listen to these other guy's comments saying it won't work and all that bs, this fix is legit and works like a charm.

Great tutorial man. Using your hot plate method not only did I fix an XBOX 360 but also a PS3 and a Gateway laptop that had lost the video output (turned on but no video whatsoever). Thanks for taking the time to make and post the video.

Worked like a charm for me! I drilled 10mm holes in the bottomplate where the studs were mounted so the 5mm bolts are completely free. I also kept the DVD-drive hooked up with all the powerups, otherwise the Xbox will be banned from xbox-live. Thanks for the idea of the hotplate, this really did the job!

UPDATE: This worked for only 1 month. My E-E friends think I probably shortened the life of the part. Too bad. I'm going to try other fixes next. ------------------- This worked for me. I followed the instructions exactly. 10 minutes over pyrex on medium-lo (halfway b/t low and medium on my electric stove) approx 2 minutes across all 3 chips (40 seconds each) with a chicago electric heat gun on high, 15 minutes more baking, 30 minutes cool off (but actually left it for about ~1.5 hours because i went out for coffee). This seemed to work just fine after 30 min high graphics gaming, 1.5 hours of playing a DVD, and 2.5 hours of 2D XBox arcade games. I wonder how long it will keep working for. One my electrical engineer coworkers said that this procedure is at best risky, but it follows the pattern of how to reflow. You bring it up to a certain temperature (the hot plate), then expose it to high heat for 40-60 seconds (for older non-ROHS chips only, ROHS chips can take more heat for longer, not sure how long). He said that you had better not put too much heat on those chips because it could either ruin it (do more damage) or lessen the life of the chip if you overheat it. They are made to take a certain amount of heat during the manufacturing process, but not for too long. He also said that using a conventional stove and heat gun weren't such a great idea because you don't know what temperature they're at and it's not finely controlled. There is a spec for CPUs/GPUs like this that can give you a good idea of what the exact temperatures are. This may have worked for me for the time being (this was also the first such issue with this xbox afaik since its manufacture in 2008), but as I've read below there may be better reflow procedures, or even "reballing". Oooo. Another thing my engineer friend said: If the cause of the disconnect was a contaminant, the issue will come back shortly after, but if it was a cold (disconnected) solder joint then this should work. He also said the real way people fix this is by using the holes on the underside of the board from where the chip is mounted to find out what pin was disconnected and then reflow just that one (they have heat guns with a small tube on the end that could probably help). You'd have to test for signal using a scope though... ugh (expensive tool). Hope this helps. Great video, pleasantly surprised that it works now!

if you do this cover the capacitors with like for layers of aluminum foil. make sure u clean the gpu and cpu better i saw the thermal paste and heat the board up a little with heat gun to prevent the warping. happens less if evenly heated. the time he did the chips was not enough. yo can put a piece of solder to see if it melte on a green part of the board wher no circuit is. if your solder is lead that melts easier its harder to melt the solder under the chips. he completely omited the flux part. if you put a piece of solder the heat gu can blow it around so be careful not to bridge stuff its just to gauge the heating process. careful with the capacitors those cyclinder things can get hot better to avoid them with heat gun and even better to shield them with aluminum for or a second hand with tin.

His finally took a dump and he went and got the new one. I took the 360 out his trash brought it home and in a few short hours I had him come over and showed him his old game back to life. Heck he even let me keep it and gave me a game or two and a controller. Wish I could shake your hand my good friend!!

This error is caused by a cold solder joint under the GPU, (H)ANA-chip or in between. Mostly it is one of the outer solder balls on the side facing the (H)ANA chip so a shim increases the chanced of success quite a bit. Can also be a component that is missing or damaged so look for missing parts near the GPU and the (H)ANA chip.

E74 is due to usually the graphics card and or the HANA chip is bad or the soldering has come loose on these and this fix can solve that problem too depending if the HANA chipset has not failed completely

this red ring rubbish. they fail because they have to legally use unleaded solder which cracks easier under heat than leaded, the only actual real fix is to get it reballed with leaded solder by a professional, not a guy that sticks it over a hob with no protective equipment, no actual knowledge of professional electronic repair, and no idea about static transfer. getting a heat gun and blasting it is not a permanent repair. it's a temporary one.

Anyone watching this today, remember this is only a temp fix, if that. Removing the X-clamps and installing bolts is NEVER a good idea. It warps the board. Re-balling it on the stove or in the oven is also hit or miss. The problem with the 360 wasn't bad solder or weak X-clamps, it was a manufacturing defect within the GPU chip itself.

This worked like a champ. I did the preheat for 10 mins, then blasted the CPU and GPU for 30 seconds each with the heat gun set at 750. I held the heat gun about 2 inches above the chips. I then did the pulse up and down on the other 2 chips for 30 seconds each. I then went back and hit the CPU and GPU again with the same cycle I used the first time. After that I let the MB bake for another 30 minutes, and then I let it cool to the touch before moving it. I used Arctic Silver paste and closed it all back up. Awesome!

I have a question, but the website you listed no longer works. I would like to know what exact size star-tip screwdrivers were used when you detached the X-shaped bars under the radiators to detach them. I have gotten as far as this point, but cannot seem to find the right size of star-tip screwdrivers at my computer store nor at Lowes, our local hardware store, and Best Buy actually refuses to repair any console unless you bought BOTH the console there and also payed over $100 for an extended warranty.

what are "star screws"? Do you mean torx screws? Now if I only had a normal hotblate (have an inductive one) and a heatgun i could do this! the only other thing I have which can make alot of heat is a soldering iron, but i guess that won't be enough because of the warping issue you described.

Setting of 3 (for your stove) didn't mean much to me and it looks like I may have burnt the chips on my xbox board. I used a hotplate just below the medium setting. Probably should have set my hotplate on low or warm. Also, may have needed a bit more clearance. Only had about 1 inch.

Why does heating up the Xbox fix the E 74 error when you just used thermal paste at the end to fix a 2 light?
@egamingtech84
@egamingtech84 10 жыл бұрын
2 red lights just means overheating. The E74 error is from overheating but to the point of cracking solder joints, so the slight overheating to begin with was just from the heatsinks not being in place. He was just testing to see if it showed an E74 error again meaning he would have to heat up the board more.
